Bengals owner Mike Brown optimistic about Trey Hendrickson deal as players report to training camp
Despite that uncertainty, though, Bengals owner Mike Brown expressed optimism that a deal with Hendrickson will get done. Brown told reporters, "I think it will get done," in regards to a new deal for Hendrickson.
Brown doubled down, saying the team was not looking to trade Hendrickson and is "working on getting [a deal] done."
If that happens, it would end months of posturing from both sides. Hendrickson, who is entering the final year of his contract, is looking for a long-term deal after racking up a league-high 17.5 sacks last season. That performance earned Hendrickson his fourth selection to the Pro Bowl and his first All-Pro selection. After starting his career with the New Orleans Saints, Hendrickson has blossomed into a superstar with the Bengals, making the Pro Bowl in each season with the team.
The 30-year-old has been vocal about getting a new deal, saying he will not play for the team on his current deal. While he was a surprise show at the team's offseason training, he skipped mandatory minicamp. That decision spurred renewed contract talks between both sides.
That contract hasn't come yet, leading to questions about how Hendrickson will handle training camp Tuesday. Team director of player personnel Duke Tobin said he expects everyone "under contract" to report to the team.
That would include Hendrickson, who is signed through 2025.
Tobin also confirmed both sides have continued to talk about a new deal. He later added that he's not sure if they'll be able to reach a deal before the start of the regular season.
Hendrickson isn't the only prominent player stuck in a contract-related tiff with the team. First rounder Shemar Stewart is the only player drafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft who has yet to sign with his team. Stewart — who has been working out at his alma mater — has not signed with the team over unusual contract guarantees that are not typically included in rookie deals.
Brown took a different track on the Stewart negotiations Monday, saying it was "a form of foolishness" that no agreement has been reached.

Titans' Treylon Burks suffers right shoulder injury during diving catch
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks hurt his right shoulder on a diving catch out of bounds Saturday in a practice at Nissan Stadium. He got up and immediately grabbed at his right shoulder. Burks then walked to the locker room with training staff. Coach Brian Callahan said in a statement that Burks was being evaluated for a shoulder injury: 'We'll have an update on his status at the appropriate time.' NFL Network reported that Burks broke his collarbone and will have more tests. Burks was the Titans' first-round draft pick at No. 18 overall in 2022, a selection acquired by trading Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown to Philadelphia. Burks has been injured more often than not in his first three seasons out of Arkansas. The 6-foot-2, 222-pound receiver has started 17 of 27 games played out of a possible 51 since being drafted. Burks has caught 53 of 94 passes thrown to him for 699 yards and one touchdown catch. Burks was knocked out on that TD catch in Philadelphia in 2022 and missed the next two games. He was carted off the field with a concussion in 2023 after trying to make a leaping catch late in a blowout loss to Pittsburgh. Denny Hamlin crashes in NASCAR Indianapolis qualifying, makes major contact with wall
Denny Hamlin pushed the car a little too much in NASCAR Cup Series qualifying for the Brickyard 400 on July 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hamlin brushed the wall off of turn 2 and spun at the entry of the backstretch, pounding the inside wall. The No. 11 Toyota suffered major damage to the front of the car, and Hamlin will go to a backup car for Sunday's race. Hamlin topped the charts in practice earlier Saturday, but the crash dropped him down to a 39th-place starting spot at a track where track position is so valuable. Joe Gibbs Racing confirmed that Hamlin was evaluated and released from the infield care center after the major contact with the inside wall. Hamlin and JGR announced a multi-year contract extension on July 25 through at least 2027. The 44-year-old leads the Cup Series in victories this season with four, including last week's win at Dover. Steelers announce Ben Roethlisberger, Joey Porter, Maurkice Pouncey to join Hall of Honor
The Pittsburgh Steelers are honoring three core members of the organization this December. The team will induct quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Joey Porter into the Steelers Hall of Honor as part of the Class of 2025. Roethlisberger, who was under center for the Steelers from 2004 to 2021, spent more than a decade as the face of the franchise. The six-time Pro Bowler led Pittsburgh to two Super Bowls, in 2006 and 2009. Roethlisberger will be inducted alongside Pouncey, his longtime center from 2010 to 2020. Porter, who played for the Steelers from 1999-2006, played with Roethlisberger for the team's Super Bowl XL win. The inductees will be celebrated with an on-field ceremony on Dec. 15, as Pittsburgh hosts the Miami Dolphins for Monday Night Football. Longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who coached both Roethlisberger and Pouncey, congratulated the trio in a video posted to social media, calling them "a small and really special group." "I can't wait to have you guys back," Tomlin said. "Well deserved." Porter's son, Joey Porter Jr., also took to social media to congratulate his father. Porter Jr., a cornerback, was selected by the Steelers in the 2023 draft, and has spent the past three years with the team. "Shout out to my dad for being a part of this year's class. It was an honor and a privilege to watch you play throughout your career, and see you put on for Steeler Nation," Porter Jr. said. "Thank you for showing me what it means to be a Steeler." The Steelers Hall of Honor, which was established in 2017, has honored players, coaches and contributors every year. Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Porter will join the 58 people who have already been inducted into the hall over the past eight years. In order to be recognized, former players must have been retired for at least three seasons and have to have played for the team for at least three seasons. (As a result, this is the first year that Roethlisberger could be honored.) Former coaches and contributors had to have made "significant contributions to the team and community." Three members of the Rooney family, who own the team, are in the Hall of Honor, including team founder Art Rooney Sr.
