Shaka iLembe is about to get ‘pretty wild', says Lifetime Achievement Award-winning director Angus Gibson

Shaka iLembe creator and director Angus Gibson said he was pleased with the reaction to the second season of Shaka iLembe and shared that the season will get heated in the coming weeks.
'The season has been very warm. It's got a slow start, but this Sunday it kind of erupts. From the next few weeks, it's pretty wild,' Gibson told The Citizen.
The second of Shaka iLembe is six episodes deep, and last night's episode was probably the most captivating as the Ndwandwe's plans to weaken Shaka's alliances took shape as King Dingiswayo finds himself captured by the Ndwandwe tribe, thanks to the queen mother's powerful potions that manipulated Dingiswayo, who Thembinkosi Mthembu portrays.

Angus' Lifetime Achievement Award
Gibson spoke to The Citizen at the 12th Simon Mahunu Sabela Film and Television Awards hosted this past weekend at the Durban ICC in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his acceptance speech, the renowned director said that when he made films in the 1980s, no one in South Africa watched them. However, alongside the late Tebogo Mahlatsi, he created the high school-based drama Yizo Yizo in the late 1990s.
'And suddenly people were watching. It was such a relief. What was really important for me was that the people we represented saw themselves and recognised themselves, and I didn't care whether people loved it or hated it. I was just happy that it was communicating and that they are watching,' he shared.
Through Bomb Productions, which Gibson co-founded with Mahlatsi and producer Desiree Markgraaff, they have created popular TV shows, including Isibaya, Zone 14, and Shaka iLembe.
'For the last 12 years, at least, I've been engaged in this part of the world [KZN] by way of Isibaya, by way of Shaka iLembe. So, it is you guys that I want approval from. This kind of affirmation makes me happy,' the director said.

Gibson scouts new talent at Sabela's
The Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film and TV Awards celebrate talent from KZN and shine a spotlight on productions shot in the province.
Gibson said one of the reasons he attends the Sabela awards is to spot new talent.
'I've been to these awards many times, and what always excites me is that it celebrates the beginners, the people that are hustling and making small things, and that's what interests me,' he said.
'I come here in search of new talent.'

We're closing the year on a different level,' he said. In 2024, Mboro teased his first single, Ngiyaba Slicer — a track inspired by his arrest at the time. The title loosely translates to 'I slice them', referencing his claim of overcoming those who come against him. Speaking to TshisaLIVE in October last year, he said he needed to understand the inner workings of the music industry before officially releasing any music. 'It's me who's singing. I need to control the narrative and the direction of the song — what I meant, what I was saying. I have to officially release the song, but first I need to apply my mind and understand how the music industry works.' Trompies on lighting up the stage, new album and more
The group is preparing to release a new EP in August. More than 30 years since their debut, kwaito legends Trompies are still the life of the party, and they have no plans to slow down. The iconic group had fans on their feet at the Imbawula Music Festival in Pretoria this past weekend, delivering a high-energy set packed with their classic hits. The group consists of Eugene Mthethwa, Mandla Mofokeng (aka Spikiri), Jairus Nkwe (aka Jakarumba), and Mahoota. Speaking to The Citizen, group member Eugene Mthethwa said the response from the crowd showed the lasting impact of their music. 'There are people from the '90s and 2000s, all singing our songs word for word. It means our music is immortal. 'We didn't do this because we couldn't finish school. We chose music because it's our gift. We take our craft seriously. When we perform, it's not just a rendition — it's a real performance. That's what has kept us going all these years,' he said. It'll be out in about three weeks. We're done recording, we're just finalising mixing and mastering,' said Spikiri. Formed in 1994, Trompies have been together for more than 30 years. Jairus Nkwe said he is thankful the group has stayed together for so long and cherishes their brotherhood. 'I'm grateful to God that we're still together, still spreading joy. I'm excited about the new EP. I also want to see whether exploitation in the industry still exists, because I believe God loves us all.' Mthethwa added that they plan to release the new music gradually. 'These days, you don't drop a full album all at once,' he explained. 'We'll release one or two tracks at a time to test the market and give fans a chance to connect with each song.' A star-studded tribute concert to honour gospel legend Sizwe Zako
One of South Africa's favourite musical talents is set to be celebrated in a tribute concert next month. Renowned gospel, jazz, pop and traditional music producer Sizwe Zako will be honoured on September 20 at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg, in recognition of his contributions to music locally and on the continent. Born in New Brighton, Gqeberha, Zako's name has become synonymous with the evolution of South African gospel music. Over the decades he has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including Rebecca Malope, Abigail Khubeka, Pure Magic and the late Vuyo Mokoena. His pioneering production style helped elevate traditional gospel into the mainstream and his impact continues to resonate with a new generation of artists. From the studio to the stage, Zako's influence has transcended borders. He has travelled across Africa, conducting music workshops and inspiring countless aspiring musicians. His approach has become a blueprint for excellence in gospel production. Among his many accolades, Zako was named 'King of Gospel' when he received the Lifetime Achiever Award at the 2010 Crown Gospel Awards and in 2013 he was again recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTN South African Music Awards. Beyond his own career, Zako has shown deep commitment to nurturing the next generation through education. He cofounded the Jen Jen Music School in partnership with Nelson Mandela University, providing vital music training to disadvantaged youth and ensuring South Africa's rich musical traditions live on. The tribute concert promises to be a powerful celebration of Zako's legacy, with a line-up featuring some of the country's most beloved performers, many of whom were mentored by or launched under his guidance.
