Aidilfitri Madani events cost RM10mil, Parliament told

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Government spent over RM10mil each year on the Aidilfitri Madani celebrations held across seven states in 2024 and 2025, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
In a parliamentary written reply dated Aug 5, Fadillah said the 2024 celebrations cost RM10,050,196.66 in total — averaging RM1.43mil per state — while the 2025 events amounted to RM10,928,222.53, or roughly RM1.56mil per location.
The Aidilfitri Madani events have been held on a broader scale nationwide since 2023, compared to the 2022 open house, which was limited to the Klang Valley and incurred a higher cost of RM11mil.
Fadillah also confirmed that no financial contributions were received from the private sector or government-linked companies (GLCs) for the 2024 and 2025 celebrations. All expenses were fully borne by the federal government as part of its social investment under the Malaysia Madani framework.
'These programmes aim to strengthen ties between the government and the people and to foster a spirit of unity and inclusiveness,' he said in response to Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN–Kuala Krai), who had requested a breakdown of spending for the Aidilfitri Madani events, including logistics, catering, promotions, and private sector involvement.
Fadillah explained that the events serve not only as festive gatherings but also as platforms to promote national unity, harmony, and cross-cultural understanding.
As large-scale events held across multiple states, the celebrations required spending on essentials such as logistics, open-access public feasts, and promotional activities to encourage widespread community participation.
'All expenditure was managed prudently and transparently in line with existing financial procedures,' he said.

Bursa Malaysia CDS account statements, notices to go fully electronic from Aug 25

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Bhd will implement the full adoption of electronic Central Depository System (CDS) account statements and notices (eStatements) for individual depositors effective Aug 25. The exchange said in a statement today that the transition aims to enhance investor experience by providing faster and more secure access to CDS account-related information, while also reflecting its broader commitment to environmental sustainability. Notwithstanding this, Bursa Malaysia will continue to issue hardcopy CDS statements and notices to specified depositors at no cost. 'Depositors aged 70 and above (born in 1955 or earlier) will continue to receive printed statements, and no action is required on their part. Those aged between 65 and 69 may submit a written request to their stockbrokers. This option is also available to depositors with disabilities. 'Depositors residing in areas with limited internet connectivity or those facing difficulties in accessing eStatements, as may be recognised by Bursa Malaysia on a case-by-case basis, may continue to receive printed copies,' it said. It said that those specified depositors who qualify and wish to opt in to receive hardcopy CDS statements and notices may approach their respective stockbrokers with supporting documents. Bursa Malaysia said other depositors who prefer to continue receiving hardcopy CDS statements and notices may subscribe at any time through their respective stockbrokers. 'A monthly fee of RM10 will apply, which will be channelled towards charitable purposes administered by Yayasan Bursa Malaysia, the exchange's charitable foundation,' it said. It said depositors who have not made the transition to eStatements should do so through any of the related Bursa Malaysia platforms. 'Depositors who currently receive their eStatements via email can also access the eStatements through the MyBURSA portal and the 'Bursa Anywhere' mobile application,' it added. – Bernama

Former Muda sec-gen freed over charge regarding LCS protest rally

KUALA LUMPUR: The Magistrate's Court acquitted former Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi over charges linked to a 2022 protest rally on the littoral combat ship (LCS) issue. Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan ordered his release after the prosecution applied to withdraw the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Anis Wahidah Mohamad cited the Federal Court's ruling that Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 was unconstitutional. 'The court ordered the accused's discharge after considering submissions and the Federal Court's decision,' said Magistrate Farah Nabihah. The RM4,000 bail posted by Amir Hariri was also ordered to be returned. Lawyer Rajsurian Pillai represented Amir Hariri during the proceedings. On July 1, the Federal Court declared Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act invalid for penalising organisers who failed to notify police five days before an assembly. The case was remitted to the High Court for resolution, but no re-prosecution order was issued. Amir Hariri had been charged under Section 9(1) for allegedly failing to inform police before the August 14, 2022, rally near Sogo Complex. Conviction under the provision carried a maximum RM10,000 fine. - Bernamapix
