Sonam made 30 calls to lover in week leading up to husband's killing

Time of India21 hours ago

Lucknow: Investigations into the murder of Indore's Raja Raghuvanshi have revealed that his wife Sonam was in regular touch with her lover Raj Kushwaha on phone till her husband's murder on May 23.
In all, Sonam made 30 calls between May 16 and 23 to Raj Kushwaha, some lasting barely 30 seconds while some of a minute's duration. The calls were made at odd hours and the two exchanged messages through WhatsApp and other app-based messaging facilities almost round the clock. Call detail records (CDRs) accessed by the investigators confirm a pattern of frequent, strategic communication. Police are currently analysing message backups, app data, and location histories to establish the full extent of the conspiracy and premeditation behind the murder plot.
Sources said the digital trail confirms that Sonam began coordinating with Raj on May 15, the same day the two allegedly met at a café near her home in Nandbagh, Indore—just four days after her wedding to Raja.
Investigators believe this sustained digital contact was not mere communication but a carefully planned conspiracy. Police allege that Sonam paid ₹50,000 to Raj Kushwaha to fund the travel of three men—Vishal, Akash, and Anand—tasked with following the newlywed couple to Shillong.
The accused trio reportedly left Indore between May 17 and 18, travelling first to Delhi by train and then boarding the Rajdhani Express to Guwahati.
Meanwhile, Sonam and Raja boarded a flight from Indore to Shillong on May 20.
During this time, Sonam allegedly kept Kushwaha updated with live location sharing, enabling the accused to track the couple in real-time. Police suspect that this coordination ultimately led to the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi on or around May 23.
Investigators are now examining message backups, app data, GPS logs, and deleted files to reconstruct the events leading to the crime and establish the extent of premeditation and criminal conspiracy. Police sources indicate more arrests may follow as the digital footprint of the accused continues to unravel.

Meanwhile, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Friday confirmed the recovery of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly referred to as the black box, from the rooftop of a building at the site of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. The Ministry of Civil Aviation clarified that, contrary to circulating reports, a video recorder that had been recovered at the crash site was not the DFDR. The AAIB has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash, with over 40 staff from the Gujarat State Government joining efforts to support the Ministry of Civil Aviation teams on the ground. The black box, a critical piece of evidence, will be analysed to determine the cause of the tragic crash that claimed the lives of all 242 passengers and crew, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. 'Contrary to some reports, the video recorder being circulated is not the DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder). The black box was found on the rooftop. AAIB began work with full force immediately. Over 40 staff from the State Government joined efforts to augment MoCA teams on site. The DFDR has been recovered from the rooftop,' said the statement of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. 32yrs after wife's death, Chamoliman acquitted of dowry charges

Dehradun: First he lost his wife, and then Ram Shankar Gupta had to fight for 32 years to exonerate himself from the charge of killing her. On Thursday, Uttarakhand high court (HC) found Chamoli resident Gupta 'not guilty' of dowry death allegations levelled at him by the family of his wife, who had died in 1993. The HC also took note of the woman's dying statement to the SDM, in which she had said that "she got burnt by accident, and her husband was not to be blamed". Gupta, who was convicted by the trial court in 2007 under section 3/4 of Dowry Prohibition Act, had contested the verdict in the HC. Delivering the judgment on Thursday, the single bench of Justice Pankaj Purohit stated: "Trial court committed grave illegality and irregularity in convicting the accused as the conviction is based upon hearsay and on basis of photostat copies of alleged letters (written by the woman), completely ignoring the settled law that photocopy in the absence of original is not admissible. " Moreover, the court noted that the statements regarding the supply of the original letter to the investigating officer made by the prosecution witnesses were "only bald statements and were not supported by any evidence". Consequently, the court acquitted Gupta of all charges 32 years after his wife's death. As per the case file, Kanchan Gupta had married Ram Shankar Gupta on May 2, 1993. She was found dead on Oct 19, 1993. Her brother, Alok Kumar Gupta, alleged her death was due to unfulfilled dowry demands. He claimed that cash, a scooter, a fridge and gold ornaments were sought as dowry from their family. Kanchan's cousin, Ashok Gupta, testified to submitting original letters about dowry demands to the investigating officer. Ram Shankar Gupta maintained his innocence, stating the accusations stemmed from his in-laws wanting him to marry his deceased wife's elder sister. He affirmed having good relations with his wife and denied any dowry demands. His brother, Ram Dev Gupta, testified that Kanchan was content in her marriage and had holidayed in various places during honeymoon with her husband. He added they informed her family about the accident and conducted final rites with their consent. The investigating officer confirmed receiving the case after a 1.5-year delay and collecting witness statements. The defence counsel argued that there was an unexplained delay in lodging the FIR, which created serious doubt over the entire prosecution's story. He stressed the SDM-recorded dying declaration where the wife stated she accidentally caught fire while cooking at home. The defence counsel noted that while the trial court acquitted the appellants under sections 498-A (criminalises cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman) and 304-B (dowry death) of IPC, they were convicted under section 3/4 (penalty for demanding dowry) of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Gupta, now in his late 50s, was out on bail. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
