Anwar set for second visit to Russia

PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will begin a four-day official visit to Russia tomorrow following an invitation from Russian president Vladimir Putin.
This will be Anwar's second visit to Russia since assuming office in November 2022.
Anwar, who visited Russia last September, will deliver a speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, hold meetings with Russian business leaders, and meet with the Malaysian diaspora in Moscow.
His senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said Anwar would also deliver a keynote address during the plenary session of the 16th Kazan International Economic Forum (KazanForum) on Friday.
KazanForum is an international economic summit focused on strengthening ties between Russia and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states.
During Anwar's visit to Russia last September, Putin said there were numerous opportunities to expand trade between Russia and Malaysia – which currently stands at about US$3.5 billion annually.
Anwar's visit to Russia this week comes amid fears of a global economic slowdown sparked by the sweeping tariffs announced by US president Donald Trump last month.
Last November, Anwar revealed that he had rejected a call by the top US diplomat to stop being friendly with Russia.

He said the government would ensure that the proposal to set up the academy becomes a reality. He also urged the youth to be voices that contribute to building Malaysia into a great nation, and not to fall prey to the incitement of politicians who play up racial issues.

Russian troop advancement in Sumy region stopped says Zelensky

(AP pic) KYIV : Ukrainian forces have stopped Russian troops advancing in the northeastern Sumy region and are now battling to regain control along the border with Russia, president Volodymyr Zelensky said. In remarks released for publication by his office today, Zelensky said that Moscow has amassed about 53,000 troops in the direction of Sumy. 'We are leveling the position. The fighting there is along the border. You should understand that the enemy has been stopped there. And the maximum depth at which the fighting takes place is 7km from the border,' Zelensky said. Reuters could not verify the battlefield reports. Russia's troops have been focusing their assaults in the eastern Donetsk region. But since the start of the month, they have intensified their attacks in the north-east, announcing plans to create a so-called 'buffer zone' in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. The Russian war in Ukraine is in its fourth year, but it has intensified in recent weeks. Ukraine conducted an audacious drone attack this month that took out multiple aircraft inside Russia and also hit the bridge connecting Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula using underwater explosives. Moscow ramped up its air assaults after the attack. Zelensky said that Ukrainian troops had maintained their defensive lines along more than 1,000km of the frontline. He also dismissed Moscow's claims that Russian troops had crossed the administrative border into the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk. Zelensky said that Russia was sending small assault groups 'to get one foot on the administrative border' and make a picture or a video, but these attacks were repelled. Dnipropetrovsk borders three regions that are partially occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Russia now controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory. Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine was unable to regain all of its territory by military force and reiterated his pleas for stronger sanctions on Russia to force Moscow into negotiations to end the war. Two rounds of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul produced few results that could lead to a ceasefire and a broader peace deal. The two sides agreed only to exchange prisoners of war. Several swaps have already been conducted this month, and Zelensky said he expected them to continue until June 20 or 21. In separate remarks made on communications platform Telegram today, he said that a new group of Ukrainian prisoners of war had come home as part of another swap with Russia. 'We continue to take our people out of Russian captivity. This is the fourth exchange in a week,' Zelensky wrote on his personal account. Ukrainian officials responsible for exchanging prisoners said the vast majority of the soldiers released in the exchange had been held captive since 2022 with many captured during the defence of Mariupol. The officials said Kyiv had, meanwhile, received the bodies of 1,200 of its soldiers killed in the war with Russia. The bodies were handed over to Ukraine on Friday. 'The agreement is that the exchanges will be completed, and the sides will discuss the next step,' Zelensky said.

Sabah PH to start polls negotiations with GRS soon, says PKR leader

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah Pakatan Harapan is expected to begin official talks with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah soon in preparation for the 17th state election. Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud said the state chapter had been given the green light to negotiate with GRS by both the PKR and PH central leadership, RTM reported. He said the main focus of Sabah PH at present is to form a strong political collaboration to ensure the state's stability and development. 'We've started talks with Barisan Nasional. After this, we will hold discussions with GRS,' he was quoted as saying. Last month, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor reiterated his desire to continue the existing alliance between his coalition and PH for the upcoming state election. Hajiji, who is the Sabah chief minister, said the existing cooperation between GRS and PH in governing the state should be the foundation in determining any electoral pact. He had also conveyed his views to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is the PH chairman. Hajiji had stated numerous times in the past GRS's intention to work with PH in the state election, which must be held by the end of the year. In early May, however, the unity government secretariat announced that BN and PH had agreed to work together to face the state polls, following a meeting between their chairmen, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar. Hajiji then threatened that GRS would go solo, but Anwar later stepped in and called for PH-BN to work with the state coalition. AdChoices ADVERTISING Earlier today, GRS deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali supported Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin's call for GRS and BN to contest against each other in the state election. He said Bung's suggestion to consider cooperation only after the election is reasonable, as a direct contest would clarify who has real support.
