Frankie Dettori drops 10 fearless Royal Ascot predictions and a major admission about himself as he picks out winners

The Italian star won't be riding at the famous meeting this week as he revealed that he turned the chance of mounts at the meeting
Flying Frankie Dettori reckons punters will have cash for expensive champagne once Sober does the business at Royal Ascot.
The Italian star won't be riding at the famous meeting this week as he revealed that he turned the chance of mounts at the meeting.
But Dettori, who once rode a Magnificent Seven at the track at September 1986, still knows the form book inside-out and has marked cards for the five days.
He loves it and said: 'I was offered to return to riding in Britain at Royal Ascot this year, but turned it down, though there is a little devil on my shoulder that says to me: One more time.
'It is our Olympics. It is the best that racing provides to the general public, it only comes around once a year, and attracts interest from all over the world, not just in England and Europe.
'There are Australians, Americans and Japanese as well. This is what people get involved in racing for, they want to have a horse that is good enough to go to Royal Ascot.
'The royal family play a big part, the dressing up, the creme de la creme of horse racing to boot as well. It is a range of five days of extraordinary racing for everybody to get their teeth into.
'It comes early in the season, it is in the middle of June, but everybody's target is always Royal Ascot, especially the superpower yards, they have the bigger numbers but their focus is the Classics and Royal Ascot.'
Dettori - speaking to Stake – reckons jumping maestro Willie Mullins offers the best chance of a winner for punters this week and handed out a host of racing tips for the meeting.
Frankie Dettori's Group 1 Royal Ascot tips
Queen Anne Stakes
'It is an amazing race. I really like Rosallion, he ran a super race last time out and I would also put in the American horse, Carl Spackler. I was second to him at Keeneland and he absolutely destroyed me. He is a horse that is improving, not a typical American horse as he is easy to handle, the occasion will not get to him. He could be a bit of a price.'
King Charles III Stakes
'You can name ten in here but I have gone quite boring with last year's winner - Asfoora. I think he is head and shoulders above, he has had a prep run and would not be surprised if he hasn't been trained right for this race. It's the hardest race of the week to pick.'
St James's Palace Stakes
'This is probably the best race of the week. There are possibly three Guineas winners turning up but I would like to see my old boss win it (John Gosden) with Field Of Gold and I think he will. I was super impressed last time, he is still on the way up, I would say he will be one of NAPs for the week and I'll be surprised he gets turned over.'
Prince Of Wales Stakes
'There are a few you can put in but I am going to stick with the obvious one, Los Angeles. He stays well, has a big heart, Ryan Moore will have him prominent and whatever horse passes him will win, but possibly none will, because he will put them to the sword. He battles too so I'll go with him.'
Ascot Gold Cup
'Aidan O'Brien's runner, Kyprios, is out and has left a big hold, they are relying on Illinois now but I am going to stick with a horse that loves Ascot, he stays, he's not Stradivarius but Trawlerman is as solid as a rock. John trained him for this race this year, you know Trawlerman is solid so I'll go with him.'
Commonwealth Cup
'This is my NAP in the Group 1s of the week - Shadow Of Light. He showed great speed in the Guineas, most of the good horses have gone to the St James's Palace,I think this leaves the door open for him to show his stuff. He could be my banker of the week, Field Of Gold would have been a bit too obvious.'

Coronation Cup
'This my last Royal Ascot winner, it took me years to get it, in this race. Zarigana is my pick. She was a lucky winner of the French Guineas but she is a top class filly. Mikael Barzalona gave her too much to do and got beat but won it in the Stewards Room, but he won't make that mistake again.'

Jubilee Stakes
'I like Inisherin, Kevin Ryan's horse. I have gone for him, it is a wide open race, you also have to chuck in the Japanese horse they are raving about, you have to.'
Longshot of the week

'I have gone with Billy Loughnane, the up and coming young jockey, he is riding the crest of a wave right now so I am going with the one he rides, Oliver Show in the Royal Hunt Cup.'
Banker of the week (non-Group 1)
'I couldn't leave him out - Willie Mullins. His runner in the Queen Alexandra Stakes - Sober.'

Louis Rees-Zammit reveals biggest issue with the NFL after returning to rugby

Louis Rees-Zammit has opened up on his decision to return to rugby union after an 18-month stint in the NFL, admitting he felt he was 'wasting his talent' in American football Louis Rees-Zammit claimed he didn't get the same opportunites as his team-mates after deciding to end his NFL dream. The Welsh international has made a return to rugby after fearing his talent was being squandered on the practice pitches of the ruthless world of American football. ‌ Rees-Zammit had an 18-month stint trying to make it in America with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars before conceding defeat and returning home to union. ‌ The 24-year-old, who boasts 32 Wales caps, signed up with Bristol earlier this month after failing to transition from union wing to running back or wide receiver. He is now on a one-year contract with the Bears, having failed to play a full professional game in the States and spent most of his time on the training ground but harbours no regrets about giving it a shot. ‌ He confessed: "I just felt I was wasting my talent out there to be honest. It's very difficult to get into the NFL if you haven't come through the college system. "You just don't get the same opportunities as those boys. I wasn't getting many reps and I was fed up when I was practicing there. "But the experience was unbelievable. Living in a new country, completely different culture, being involved in a locker room which was completely different to rugby. All those experiences are only going to help me, coming back.", reports the Express. "My leadership skills have gotten a lot better, just being next to those global figures like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. They are absolutely huge figures and everything they do day to day I learnt from." Rees-Zammit was aware of the uphill battle he faced to make it through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, having spoken to Christian Wade, who attempted the same feat but was let go by the Buffalo Bills in 2022. He said: "I just knew how ruthless it was out there. It was absolutely brutal. I was seeing new players every day, players cut every day and it was pretty tough. ‌ "I knew that going out there, I spoke to Christian a lot and he told me his experiences but when I went out there I saw it at first hand. That was the reason for me never ruling rugby out because I could have got cut within the first day of being there. "I gave it my best shot and maybe I didn't get the opportunities players coming out of college did. It makes sense really from a coach's point of view, because those boys have been playing that sport for so long. I am very real about, it probably wasn't for me in the end but there are no regrets." Rees-Zammit has already had a chat with Wales coach Steve Tandy and is drawing interest from the rebel R360 league set to kick off next year. "Wales is my country and I absolutely love playing for them," he said.

Man Utd dealt Rasmus Hojlund transfer boost with £40m striker deal agreed

Rasmus Hojlund could leave Manchester United this summer, with Fulham interested in the striker as a potential replacement for Rodrigo Muniz who is on the verge of joining Atalanta Italian giants Atalanta are closing in on a £40million deal for Rodrigo Muniz - which could spark a merry-go-round involving Rasmus Hojlund. Fulham have been resolute in saying they must bring in a replacement before allowing Muniz to leave and yet talks with Atalanta are now accelerating. The Serie A club believe they are finally making progress after a week of frustration considering re-signing Hojlund as a back-up option. But now Fulham are interested in Manchester United's out-of-favour striker who will be allowed to leave Old Trafford after the Red Devils spent £200m on a new forward line this summer of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Hojlund was left out of the squad for United's opening game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday, with Cunha starting up front and Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee making the bench. When asked about Hojlund's absence, Ruben Amorim said: "It is going to be like this during the season. "We have more options, we have to choose the right players for each game. Sometimes, it's not just thinking about 11 guys that start the game and imagine how we are going to finish the game and win the game. "They are in moments of a few training sessions for Josh and, with Sesko, he changed his life in one week. We tried to choose the best team to start and then, during the game, we will see." AC Milan are also looking to sign a new striker this summer and sporting director Igli Tare has confirmed the club are interested in Hojlund. Speaking to Sport Mediaset, Tare said: "Hojlund is a good option for us. "We are evaluating him these days, but the transfer market is unpredictable. We know that we have to intervene in that position and we also know that they must be players who can give something more to this group." Hojlund joined United from Atalanta for a fee of around £72m back in 2023, but he has struggled to make much of an impact after managing just 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions. However, when asked about his future earlier this summer, Hojlund said: "I think the most important thing for me is just to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we'll see what happens. "I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I'm only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22 (like Erling Haaland). "But I've learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I'm starting to develop and become even better in the basics. Now it's just about for me to sharpen myself and I've done very well in the pre-season so far. Just focusing on continuing that. "Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team."

Ben Foster names two signings who can save Man Utd from 'mid-table misery'

Ben Foster says Manchester United have little choice but to sign a 'proper goalkeeper' and should be targeting one of Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martinez in order to to escape 'mid-table misery' this season. United were much the better team in their Premier League opener against Arsenal, but were let down by an Altay Bayindir error for Riccardo Calafiori's 13th-minute header, which ultimately proved to be the winner. It was widely assumed that Andre Onana had missed Sunday's 1-0 defeat through injury, but Ruben Amorim confirmed that the Cameroonian was fully fit and his omission was down to the 'balance' of the team. It leaves Amorim with an almighty selection headache ahead of the side's trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham next weekend, with 39-year-old Tom Heaton the only other option in United's first-team squad. The Red Devils have until the transfer window closes on September 1 to bring in a new shot-stopper and there have been calls for Donnarumma to be brought to Old Trafford after the Italian was discarded by PSG boss Luis Enrique. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Martinez is another goalkeeper who has been linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams throughout the course of the summer, but Aston Villa are reportedly adamant that their number one is not for sale. 'It just forces Manchester United's hand now to go and sign a proper goalkeeper,' ex-United 'keeper Foster said of Bayindir's shaky display on his Ben Foster – The Cycling GK YouTube channel. 'I think if you can get a Martinez or Donnarumma then you've just got to do it now. You've got to do it. 'If you sign that player then it's going to be the difference between mid-table misery or really pushing for that top six and I think if they can get that goalkeeper in then they can push for the top six. 'I said in our predictions the other day that Manchester United could get a sneaky fourth or fifth, but that's on the proviso that they get a proper goalkeeper in.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video According to Foster, Amorim should start with veteran goalkeeper Heaton against Fulham should United fail to sign anyone before Sunday's contest. 'You need to be behind the scenes to know where everybody is at. Tom Heaton hasn't played a lot of football,' Foster said of Amorim's options. 'He's played some pre-season friendlies, Onana didn't play any because he got injured and then Bayindir has obviously been fit all the way through. 'I think that's the overriding decision as to why he started the game, but by all accounts Onana is fit now. 'What this does now is it is a massive problem for the next game, it's a massive headache for the next game and it asks all these sorts of questions. There's going to be so much surrounding it coming into that next game. 'Do you start Bayindir, whose confidence will be low after this first game? People will be going, 'Onana isn't much better and there's a lot of pressure on him'… Tom Heaton, I would trust him to give me a six and a half or seven and a half out of ten.' Setting aside United's goalkeeping issues, Foster felt Amorim's men were largely impressive against Arsenal, with new signing Matheus Cunha producing an 'absolutely brilliant' performance. 'I thought they were fantastic in the game and didn't deserve to lose, they definitely didn't deserve to lose the game,' he added. More Trending 'We were buzzing off Cunha and Mbeumo, we were buzzing off that front three a few weeks back and Cunha was just different level. 'He's always positive and he always just looks to go forward. He never looks for the simple option and he'll always try and break ranks or exploit space. 'He'll always try and get his shot off which, at times, does annoy some of the other players because he's happy to shoot from 40 yards at times. 'I thought he was absolutely brilliant and man of the match yesterday.' Who would be the better signing for Man Utd? For more stories like this, check our sport page.
