Motherwell through as Tawanda Maswanhise hits late double
The Steelmen moved five points clear of Dougie Imrie's side, who retain hopes of a best runners-up spot.
Motherwell produced some good passages of play in and around the Morton box in the first half but had a major let-off when Paul McGinn felled Tomi Adeloye as the Morton striker was bearing down on goal. Referee Ryan Lee ruled McGinn got the ball, although he appeared to get the man first.
The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute. James Storer brilliantly pushed a Johnny Koutroumbis shot up and on to the bar before Apostolos Stamatelopoulos bundled the ball over the line.
Morton pressed for an equaliser but Maswanhise collected Liam Gordon's through-ball and slotted home in the 83rd minute before curling into the top corner from 25 yards in stoppage time for his fourth goal of the new season.
Ethan Ross hit a double as Falkirk came from behind to beat Queen's Park 3-1 and move top of Group A.
The William Hill Premiership newcomers fell behind in the 14th minute when Josh Fowler netted following a set-piece.
Ross scored on the rebound three minutes before the break after Calvin Miller's shot was saved and then headed home five minutes after the interval.
Brian Graham grabbed his first Falkirk goal in the 87th minute after Scott Arfield's deflected shot fell into his path.

Dundee left it late to record a first win under Steven Pressley as they beat Bonnyrigg Rose 3-1, although they cannot progress. Clark Robertson's opener was cancelled by Cameron Ross but the visitors struck twice in the final four minutes through Emile Acquah and Billy Koumetio.
First-half goals from Dom Thomas, Curtis Main and George Oakley saw Ayr beat Forfar 3-0 and move two points ahead of St Mirren ahead of the Group D decider in Paisley on Sunday.
A Lee Kilday own goal earned Dunfermline a 2-1 win over Hamilton and kept alive their hopes of progress behind Group E leaders Hearts, who can maintain their perfect record against Dumbarton on Wednesday.
St Johnstone are in control of Group F after goals from Jamie Gullan, Josh McPake and Makenzie Kirk earned a 3-1 win over Raith Rovers. The Perth side are three points ahead of Inverness, who thrashed East Kilbride 6-2.

Kilby boss Mick Kennedy has snapped up striker Lewis Dobbie after he was released by Celtic, while former Dunfermline defender Rhys Breen has also signed. Breen made his debut in last week's 6-2 loss to Inverness in the Premier Sports Cup, opening the scoring on the night, while Dobbie got his first outing in a behind closed doors friendly with Premiership side Hibs on Sunday, which Kilby lost 5-2. On the new arrivals, Kennedy said: 'Obviously, we've mentioned before that Ouzy See needs an operation and we don't know how long he is out for. He might have a bit of a wait for it so we'll need to wait and see. 'That led to us bringing in Lewis Dobbie in from Celtic, which we are delighted with. 'Rhys Breen is someone we have been chasing all summer. He was just assessing all his options, so we are delighted he's chosen us because he will be a great signing. 'I'm delighted with the recruitment and that should be us done now. Once we get all the injured boys back we should be in a really strong position. 'We are a wee bit stretched and I think it will be a few weeks before we are back to strength. Our full back four from last season weren't playing last week but we'll get there. We can't use it as an excuse because we've got a strong squad. 'It just so happens everything has happened early in the season.' Meanwhile, Kennedy was pleased with Sunday's showing against the Hibees - where Jack Leitch bagged a brace - following a second-half capitulation against League One Inverness in the cup. He said: 'It was basically Hibs' first team and they beat us 5-2, but I was delighted with the boys. 'We went in 1-0 up at half-time after being outstanding in the first half. We were really good for large parts of the game so I was delighted with that. 'Bar the injuries, we go into this weekend in a really good place, I think. 'The Inverness game was a strange one. We should have been 2-0 up. Robbo [John Robertson] hits the inside of the post at 1-0, but I thought Inverness deserved to go in 1-1 at half-time. 'We have been really struggling with injuries. We gave Joe Morrsion, who just came in from Celtic, his first start and he'd only had one training session. Our right-back was at left-back, centre-mid was left-back, our right midfielder was centre half, so we were all over the place. 'There was a mad 10-15 minute spell in the second half where it caught up with us. 'We had to use the cup as pre-season and with the squad being so light and a few new boys coming in, it was just one game too many for us. 'But there were large parts of the game where we played really well and there wasn't a huge gulf in class.'

Brendan Rodgers eyes transfer boost as Celtic prepare for Premiership opener
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers hopes to add to his squad ahead of their William Hill Premiership opener against St Mirren. Benjamin Nygren, Kieran Tierney and more recently Shin Yamada have added to Rodgers' first-team options during pre-season but he has seen the likes of Nicolas Kuhn, Greg Taylor, Jeffrey Schlupp and Maik Nawrocki depart and lost Jota to long-term injury late last season. Reports claim Celtic have had three bids rejected for Go Ahead Eagles midfielder Jakob Breum and have made an approach to sign Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan. Questioned over his transfer plans, Rodgers told Sky Sports News: 'We hope this week there might be some news on that. 'But, of course, coaches and the transfer market don't move at the same pace. A coach always wants a player in immediately, but the transfer market doesn't always work like that. There's a lot that has to go into it. 'But it's also the reason for pre-season. You want your team together as quick as you can, so you can get some good work in, get the togetherness, get the spirit, everything formed. 'But of course, we know that traditionally it can be a challenge. Hopefully that will be the case by the end of the window. But in the meantime we're working very, very hard. 'We're excited by what's here at the moment and looking forward to the weekend.' Rodgers talked about ambition last week after a 5-1 friendly defeat by Ajax – which followed impressive wins over Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle. But he stressed that his stated desire for new players is based on realism first and foremost. 'I think it's arithmetic,' he said. 'It's purely counting. We've lost players and we want to replace those players with quality. It's not an opinion. It's where it's at. 'We've lost key players and we want to replace those as quick as we can in order to keep developing. I'm very hopeful that we can do that.' Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton this week claimed the squad was weaker than the group that finished last season but Rodgers would not be drawn on such comparisons. 'Listen, for me the focus is very much on what's here,' he said. 'We know we have work to do and I'm hopeful that we can get that done by the end of the window. 'But in the meantime, the players have worked fantastic over the course of this pre-season, some really good performances and growing and developing our spirit, which is going to be really important for us.'

Clyde confident for season ahead, says Craig Howie as side set for Dumbarton opener
The Bully Wee are ready to kick-off their League Two campaign this weekend Clyde star Craig Howie says there's a real sense of confidence about the club as they head into their League Two opener at Dumbarton on Saturday. The New Douglas Park club's Premier Sports Cup ended in a 3-0 defeat at Morton on Saturday, having drawn 2-2 at home to Stenhousemuir on Tuesday, winning the shoot-out 4-3 for the extra point. That left the Bully Wee third in Group G, behind winners Motherwell and runners-up Morton, with six points from their four games. But Howie, from Rutherglen, reckons it will have them well prepared for the challenge ahead. He said: 'It's always good to get some wins and good performances in the bag. Everyone knows it's a completely different ball game when the league starts, but it's always good to get a bit of momentum, and there seems to be a bit of confidence about the place at the moment. 'I'd like to think we can take that into the league campaign. 'I think every single game in League Two is going to be really tough and competitive, there's not going to be any stand-outs at the bottom or the top, so it's all to play for. 'But this is one we're really looking forward to – we've got a couple of boys that we've signed who were playing with Dumbarton last season and vice-versa, so it should be a good game. It's really important to get off to a good start.' Howie bagged his first goal of the season in the last-gasp 2-1 win over Peterhead at the Balmoor Stadium, equalling last season's tally, and he wants more. He said: 'As a defender, you're more focused on trying to keep clean sheets, but it's good to get one so early on, and it probably takes away a wee bit of pressure. 'It's one I can look to build on, and I need to challenge myself to get more goals, because it's something I don't do enough of, particularly with the amount of corners and stuff Clyde get. 'I'm definitely challenging myself. I'm not putting a number on it, but I'm definitely looking to get a few more over the season.'
