Brendan Rodgers eyes transfer boost as Celtic prepare for Premiership opener
Benjamin Nygren, Kieran Tierney and more recently Shin Yamada have added to Rodgers' first-team options during pre-season but he has seen the likes of Nicolas Kuhn, Greg Taylor, Jeffrey Schlupp and Maik Nawrocki depart and lost Jota to long-term injury late last season.
Reports claim Celtic have had three bids rejected for Go Ahead Eagles midfielder Jakob Breum and have made an approach to sign Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan.
Questioned over his transfer plans, Rodgers told Sky Sports News: 'We hope this week there might be some news on that.
'But, of course, coaches and the transfer market don't move at the same pace. A coach always wants a player in immediately, but the transfer market doesn't always work like that. There's a lot that has to go into it.
'But it's also the reason for pre-season. You want your team together as quick as you can, so you can get some good work in, get the togetherness, get the spirit, everything formed.
'But of course, we know that traditionally it can be a challenge. Hopefully that will be the case by the end of the window. But in the meantime we're working very, very hard.
'We're excited by what's here at the moment and looking forward to the weekend.'
Rodgers talked about ambition last week after a 5-1 friendly defeat by Ajax – which followed impressive wins over Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle.
But he stressed that his stated desire for new players is based on realism first and foremost.
'I think it's arithmetic,' he said. 'It's purely counting. We've lost players and we want to replace those players with quality. It's not an opinion. It's where it's at.
'We've lost key players and we want to replace those as quick as we can in order to keep developing. I'm very hopeful that we can do that.'
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton this week claimed the squad was weaker than the group that finished last season but Rodgers would not be drawn on such comparisons.
'Listen, for me the focus is very much on what's here,' he said. 'We know we have work to do and I'm hopeful that we can get that done by the end of the window.
'But in the meantime, the players have worked fantastic over the course of this pre-season, some really good performances and growing and developing our spirit, which is going to be really important for us.'

The parade started at Blyswood Square at 3pm with hundreds of marchers taking part. Holland, 29, is starring in Spider-Man: Brand New Day which started filming in Glasgow on Friday. Holland was seen on Sunday shooting an action sequence in costume before speaking to a crowd of about 100 people. Large sections of the city centre have been closed off for filming and there have been warnings of widespread disruption.

Derek McInnes hopes Tony Bloom enjoyed Hearts' win over Aberdeen
Derek McInnes was delighted Hearts were able to kick off their William Hill Premiership campaign with a 2-0 victory over Aberdeen in front of ambitious new shareholder Tony Bloom. The Brighton owner was at Tynecastle for the first time after recently completing a deal to invest in the Edinburgh club, and he had his name sung by supporters lapping up his bold pre-match declarations that Hearts can win the Scottish title and break into the Champions League. After an early own goal from Dons skipper Graeme Shinnie and a 73rd-minute header from Stuart Findlay sent Hearts top of the fledgling league table, manager McInnes said of Bloom's attendance at the match: 'He'll have loved getting his name sung. I haven't spoken to him yet, I'm meeting him tomorrow. 'We've had a couple of text conversations. I think he would have been encouraged as well, seeing Tynecastle the way it was. I think he would have enjoyed it. He certainly would have enjoyed the result because, as he's said, he just wants to see a winning Hearts team more often than not. That's what we're all wanting.' McInnes smiled wryly when asked about Bloom's bullish comments in the 24 hours leading up to the match, but he said: 'I knew what Tony was going to say, I heard what you guys heard, absolutely no problem with it at all. 'There's so many people, including Tony, who are ambitious and want Hearts to be successful at the club. He's obviously come in with a fresh pair of eyes and came out and shot for exactly what he wants. 'We're trying to make progress and I think we can make progress. Where Tony and others and myself think we can bridge the gap and maybe try and get ahead of others is the confidence they have in the recruitment.' McInnes felt he had 'a team screaming to win the game of football there, absolutely busting'. 'For sheer commitment, guts, effort, I thought we were 10 out of 10,' he said. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin conceded the better team won. 'We had an idea of how we were going to take on the game today in the first half with the ball, and we didn't succeed in that,' he said. 'Hearts put good pressure on us, and then they win these second balls and create a momentum with the crosses. They were better in the first half. 'I think in the second half we got better with the ball and started creating some chances in their box, but we were not really clinical. We were not really there.'
