Biocon plans to launch generic Wegovy obesity drug in India by 2027, CEO says
aims to launch generic copies of the blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy in India and Canada within the next two years, a top executive told Reuters, seeking to tap into a market that is estimated to grow to $150 billion globally by the early 2030s.
The push comes after Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk and U.S.-based rival Eli Lilly saw skyrocketing demand for their obesity drugs Wegovy and Zepbound.

Biopharmaceutical company Biocon plans to submit a request for approval to India's drug regulator by the end of 2026 and potentially launch in 2027 through a partner, CEO Siddharth Mittal said in an email interview on Tuesday.

The company, which also makes insulin products, expects to complete late-stage trials within the next 12 to 18 months, he added.
"Biocon is actively progressing with filings for semaglutide in Canada as well as many other emerging markets," Mittal said.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo's drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, used for diabetes and weight-loss management.
Indian generic drugmakers, including Dr Reddy's and
Cipla
, have been racing to produce cheaper versions of Wegovy when semaglutide goes off patent in 2026.
Novo launched Wegovy in India for diabetes and weight-loss management in June after Lilly's Mounjaro sales doubled within a few months following its launch in the south Asian country.
Biocon plans to file with Canadian regulatory authorities this quarter for generic versions of Ozempic and later this year for Wegovy versions.
"Subject to approval, we could look at a market launch in late 2026 or early 2027," he said.
Canada has not approved any such therapies yet, the company said.
In addition to Canada, Biocon will focus on large emerging markets such as Brazil and Mexico in Latin America, Malaysia and Hong Kong, countries in the Middle East, as well as Australia, and New Zealand to launch obesity drugs, according to the CEO.
In markets where Biocon does not have a direct presence, it is seeking local partnerships to commercialise its products, Mittal said.

UP govt seeks one-year extension for chief secretary
Lucknow: The UP govt has written to the Centre, requesting for an extension of one year for chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, who is due to retire at the end of this month. At present, Singh, a 1988 batch officer, is the seniormost in UP's bureaucracy, and holds additional charges including industrial and infrastructure development commissioner, chairperson PICUP, CEO UPEIDA, CEO UP State Highways Authority, ACS coordination and Project Director of UP Diversified Agriculture Support Project. "In support of its request, govt has mentioned Singh's involvement in major projects which include the Zero Poverty programme, which the CS is spearheading. In addition, the letter has mentioned that a Global Investors Summit and a Ground Breaking ceremony are scheduled to take place by the end of this year, for which Singh's presence will be crucial," said an officer, indicating that with assembly elections in UP less than two years away, govt would prefer to not have any major rejig in the bureaucracy while it was rolling it major programmes. Singh was appointed CS on June 30, 2024 after the retirement of DS Mishra, who was appointed CS on the last day before his retirement and continued to serve in the post for the next 2.5 years. In case the Centre does not approve Singh's extension, there are a few other names floating around who could succeed him. Himachal Pradesh govt to get 18% royalty from Karcham Wangtu hydropower project
Shimla: The Supreme Court has directed JSW Energy Company to pay 18% royalty to the Himachal Pradesh govt instead of the previously agreed 12% for the 1,045 megawatt (MW) capacity Karcham-Wangtu hydro power project on the Satluj river in Kinnaur district. This decision will result in an annual additional income of approximately Rs 150 crore, stated the state govt in a press statement issued on Wednesday. Besides this, the Supreme Court decision will also be a milestone for other power projects that have completed 12 years, and the state govt hopes that this decision will bring an income of more than Rs 250 crore per year to the govt treasury. Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has been taking up the issue of royalty from the power projects on priority in a step to protect the state's rights over its natural resources. The Supreme Court's decision overturned the Himachal Pradesh High Court's May 2024 judgment, which allowed JSW Energy to pay only a 12% royalty. According to a 1999 agreement between the state govt and the company, royalties were set at 12% for the first 12 years of the project and 18% for the subsequent 28 years. The state govt went in appeal before the Supreme Court, where the state govt also engaged leading legal senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Prag Tripathi, who were assisted by advocate general Anoop Kumar Ratan, reads the govt statement.
