Indonesian police have arrested three Australian men on suspicion of murder over the fatal shooting of another Australian on the resort island of Bali.
Zivan Radmanovic — a 32-year-old from Melbourne — was killed just after midnight local time (6 pm CET) on 13 June at a villa near Munggu Beach in Bali's Badung district, local authorities said.
A second man — 34-year-old Sanar Ghanim from Melbourne — was left seriously injured in the attack.
"Three suspects have been arrested along with several pieces of evidence allegedly used to carry out the shooting," Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya told reporters.
"The three suspects are Australian men and they are now being held and questioned for further investigation," he said.
Police had initially detained two suspects, but further investigation led them to arrest a third man who helped to organise the shooting, Adityajaya said.
Two of the men were arrested late on Tuesday in Singapore and at Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta International Airport, while trying to flee. Indonesian police did not say where the third suspect was apprehended.
The men face various charges — including murder and firearm offences — that could carry up to a life sentence or the death penalty if found guilty, according to Adityajaya.
Witnesses at the villa where the shooting occurred told investigators that two gunmen arrived on a scooter around midnight.
Radmanovic was shot in a bathroom of his room, where 17 bullet casings and two intact bullets were found, according to the authorities.
His wife Gourdeas Jazmyn told police that she suddenly woke up when she heard her husband screaming. She said she hid under a blanket when she heard multiple gunshots.
She later found her husband's body and saw the injured Ghanim, whose wife also testified to seeing the attackers, the police said.
Adityajaya said police are still investigating the motive and how the suspects would have obtained a weapon, as firearm ownership and use are heavily regulated in Indonesia.
"We are still investigating the possibility of other suspects," he said.
It's Day 5 in Budapest at the OTP Bank World Judo Championships and the action rolls on.
At -70kg, Lara CVJETKO is no stranger to World finals, but this time she was out for gold. The Croatian judoka returned to the big stage with more experience, greater composure, and a renewed hunger to stand on the top of the podium. CVJETKO looked like an athlete on a mission – ready to turn silver into gold.
Her opponent was Shiho TANAKA – a world bronze medallist herself. She had confidently worked her way through the draw. Each contest saw her judo sharpen, her intent clearer. This was her chance to move up the podium and she stepped onto the tatami with gold firmly in her sights.
With both athletes hungry for their first World title, the final was set for a high-level showdown. A golden score yuko from TANAKA was the decider. The Japanese judoka rose from the tatami as a World Champion.
Hungary Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade Mr Péter SZIJJÁRTÓ awarded the medals.
At -90kg, Sanshiro MURAO was on fire, ippon in every contest on his way to the gold medal match. An amazing run through the preliminaries, with a dominant performance, had the judo world watching closely. Each match was a showcase of control, timing and explosive technique.
MURAO looked unstoppable, was this finally his year to take the top of the podium and find his place among judo's elite?
Facing him was his team-mate, reigning World Champion Goki TAJIMA who despite the pressure of defending his title, worked his way through the preliminaries. As the stakes rose, so did his judo with an outstanding semi-final ippon. He was finding his rhythm at the right moment, but was it enough to become a two time World Champion?
In the final the two Japanese judoka took the contest to golden score. It was a tense, tactical fight. The victory was MURAO's, he would leave Budapest as World Champion.
North Macedonia Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade Mr Timčo MUCUNSKI awarded the medals.

Suspects in Bali murder all Australian, face death penalty: police

Authorities had been searching for several suspects over the shooting of Zivan Radmanovic, a 32-year-old Australian national, on Saturday. He was killed when two people burst into his villa in the tourist hub of Badung and at least one opened fire. A second man, 34-year-old Sanar Ghanim, was seriously wounded in the attack. "Three suspects have been arrested along with several pieces of evidence allegedly used to carry out the shooting," Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya told reporters. He said the three suspects -- all Australian men -- were charged with multiple offences, including premeditated murder, which carries a maximum penalty of death, as well as murder and torture resulting in death. Murder carries the maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, while torture resulting in death carries a potential seven-year jail term. One of the suspects was detained while he was about to leave the international airport in the Indonesian capital Jakarta and flown back to Bali, in cooperation with immigration and national police officials, he said. "The other two already fled and were successfully returned because of the coordination between interpol countries in the Southeast Asia region," he added, without specifying the countries involved. He did not disclose the alleged role of the third suspect, despite the search initially focusing on two suspects. Bali police also showed on Wednesday several pieces of evidence to the media including a hammer, several pieces of clothing, and bullet casings. Witnesses, including Radmanovic's wife, said the perpetrators who fled the scene after the attack were speaking in English with a thick Australian accent, according to a local police statement. The Australian embassy in Jakarta directed questions to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which did not immediately respond to an AFP comment request.

Mali junta takes control of Canadian-owned Barrick Gold mine amid tax dispute

A judge in Mali on Monday ordered Barrick Gold's Loulo-Gounkoto gold complex to be placed under provisional administration for six months in an ongoing dispute between the Canadian mining company and the West African nation's military government over unpaid taxes. Zoumana Makadji, an accountant and a former Malian minister of health has been appointed as the company's provisional administrator within 15 days, Judge Issa Aguibou Diallo said in a statement to Barrick's lawyers. Barrick is Africa's largest gold producer. The Loulo-Gounkoto complex and its Kibali mine – located in Congo – rank among the top 10 gold mines globally, according to the company's website. Barrick Gold has been in conflict with Mali's military rulers over alleged unpaid taxes and unfair contracts with past governments. The dispute culminated in an arrest warrant in December for Barrick CEO Mark Bristow and the company's offer to pay $370 million to the government. 'While Barrick's subsidiaries remain the legal owners of the mine, operational control has been transferred to an external administrator,' Barrick said in a statement on its website following the ruling. 'National economic interests' A source representing the Mali government told AFP that the ruling 'protects national economic interests' and avoids 'the sudden closure of the mine in the absence of a revised agreement'. In December, Barrick submitted a request for arbitration to the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes to address disagreements with Mali concerning the Loulo-Gounkoto complex, where the mines are located. Despite this, the government took a series of escalatory measures, including the arrest of Barrick Gold employees, who remain detained, and the suspension of gold exports. Barrick, which has been present in Mali for three decades, emphasized that the arbitration process was still ongoing and reaffirmed its commitment to 'engaging with the government of Mali, in parallel, to identify a constructive, mutually acceptable solution.' Detained staff 'used as leverage' The company's statement on Monday added: 'The ongoing detention of (our) employees – who remain unjustly imprisoned and used as leverage in this process – is deeply concerning and inconsistent with the trust, transparency and accountability required for a genuine long-term partnership. 'To date, no credible rationale has been presented to justify this detention and the Government's position, and the Government's ever-increasing demands have lacked both factual and legal foundation.' Mali is one of Africa's leading gold producers, but it has struggled for years with jihadi violence and high levels of poverty and hunger. The military seized power in 2020, and the government has placed foreign mining companies under growing pressure as it seeks to shore up revenues. In November, the CEO of Australian company Resolute Mining and two employees were arrested in Bamako. They were released after the company paid $80 million to Malian authorities to resolve a tax dispute and promised to pay a further $80 million in the coming months.
