The 78th Cannes film festival ended Saturday on the French Riviera with the award of its top prize, the Palme d'Or.
Here is a list of the winners in the festival's main competition:
- Palme d'Or: Jafar Panahi for "It Was Just an Accident" by (Iran)
- Grand Prix: Joachim Trier for "Sentimental Value" (Norway)
- Jury prize: Oliver Laxe for "Sirat" (Spain-France) and Mascha Schilinski for "Sound of Falling" (Germany)
- Best director: Kleber Mendonca Filho for "The Secret Agent" (Brazil)
- Best actress: Nadia Melliti for "The Little Sister" (France)
- Best actor: Wagner Moura for "The Secret Agent" (Brazil)
- Special prize: Bi Gan for "Resurrection" (China)
- Best screenplay: Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for "Young Mothers" (Belgium)
- Camera d'Or for best first film: Hasan Hadi for "The President's Cake" (Iraq). Special mention for "My Father's Shadow" by Akinola Davies (Nigeria)
- Best short film: Tawfeek Barhom for "I Am Glad You're Dead Now" by (Palestine-Greece-France)

Remembering veteran Egyptian actress Dalal Abdel-Aziz - Screens - Arts & Culture

Egyptian actress Dalal Abdel-Aziz died four years ago today at the age of 61. She passed away due to complications of COVID-19 on 7 August 2021, just three months after the passing of her husband of 37 years, renowned comedian Samir Ghanem 1937-2021). The couple are survived by two daughters, actresses Donia and Amy. Abdel-Aziz was born on 17 January 1960 in Zagazig city in Sharqiya governorate. She graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University, before moving to Cairo, where she launched her career with director Nour El-Demerdash. She started with a small role in a TV series in 1977 before gaining critical acclaim in the 1980s for her outstanding performances in TV and film. She starred in tens of TV series, films and plays in a career that spanned more than four decades. In 1998, Abdel-Aziz was awarded Best Actress at the Television Awards Festival. Abdel-Aziz divided her time between theatre, television, and film. She starred in several plays, including Fares wa Bani Khaiban (Fares and the Losers, 1987), Akhouya Hayess wa Ana Layess (My Brother Is Happy and I'm Lost, 1992), and Hobb fil-Takhshibah. The latter Hobb Fil Takhshibah (Love in Prison, 1994) starring Hisham Abdel-Hamid, George Sidhom and Diaa Al-Merghany, directed by Samir Seif and written by Youssef Maati. Her cinematic career started to pick up in the 1980s, when she starred in Adel Sadek's Nehayet Ragol Tazawag (The End of a Man Who Was Married, 1983) starring Samir Ghanem, Poussy, Hala Fakher and Ali Al-Sherif. She went on to star in Yarab Walad (A Boy Child, Amen, 1984), Basamat Fawk Al-Maa (Prints on Top of Water), Al-Ragol Yoheb Martein (The Man Loves Twice, 1987), Al-Aghbiaa Al-Thalatha (The Three Idiots, 1990), among other titles. In the 2000s, she appeared in Asrar Al-Banat (Girls' Secrets, 2001), Asef Ala Al-Ezaag (Sorry for the Inconvenience, 2008), in Amr Salama's Sonei fi Masr (Made in Egypt, 2014), and Moataz Al-Toni's Samir wi Shahir wi Baheir (Samir and Shahir and Baheir, 2010). On television, Abdel-Aziz participated in numerous grand productions like Layali Al-Hilmyia (Hilmyia Nights, 1987:1989) in its two seasons alongside number of great actors. In the late years, she also appeared in TV series Lahfa (2015) alongside her daughters Donia and Amy Samir Ghanem, and was a guest of honor in TV series Nelly wi Sherihan (Nelly and Sherihan) again with her two daughters. Mohamed Mounir's concert in the 3rd New Alamein Festival was postponed due to the artist's sudden health crisis. Mounir, 70, was scheduled to appear alongside Ramy Gamal in a concert at the festival scheduled on 16 August. The concert was to mark one of Mounir's recent collaborations with the younger generation of musicians. In July, he collaborated with Tamer Hosny in a new music video titled El-Zou' El-Aali. Mounir has been among the staple performers of the New Alamein Festival, starring in the first two editions in 2023 and 2024. The 3rd New Alamein Festival, which runs from 18 July to 29 August, showcases a stellar lineup of top artists from Egypt and the Arab world, including Amr Diab, Angham, Assala Nasri, Tamer Hosny, Tamer Ashour, Marwan Pablo, Lege-Cy, Wegz, Cairokee, and more. It also features a wide range of artistic, sports, entertainment, and culinary events. The King Born on 10 October 1954, in Manshiyat Nubia, a village in Aswan, southern Egypt, Mohamed Mounir's music and distinctive voice have captivated millions across the Arab world for decades. Mounir has become one of Egypt's most iconic singers, known for blending Nubian roots with modern genres, like pop and jazz. As his popularity grew significantly, Mounir quickly became beloved by many fans. Mounir's musical repertoire comprises 20 albums and numerous singles, each showcasing his ability to blend Nubian sounds with contemporary music. Sharm El-Sheikh Int'l Theatre Festival for Youth to honour actress Elham Shaheen - Stage & Street - Arts & Culture

The Sharm El-Sheikh International Theatre Festival for Youth (SITFY) will honour actress Elham Shaheen by naming its 10th edition after her. The festival's management has also released the poster of the upcoming edition, scheduled to take place between 25 and 30 November. The poster features Shaheen as its honorary artist. The SITFY, which is held annually, is the first festival of its kind to be organized in Sinai. The Sinai launch aims to provide opportunities for young theatre practitioners while decentralizing the artistic scene and reviving tourism in South Sinai. The SITFY was founded and headed by Mazen El-Gharabawy, with Engy El-Bestawy as its artistic director. Its 10th edition will also hold a special celebration for honouring late artist Samiha Ayoub, who passed away last June and was the festival's honorary president. Elham Shaheen Shaheen was born in Cairo in 1960 and graduated from the Institute of Theatrical Arts in 1982. She started her career with the help of director Kamal Yassin, who gave her a role in his TV play, Hooreya men Al Marikh (Mermaid from Mars). Her films include Al-Nemr wa Al-Ontha (The Tiger and The Woman, 1987); Bawabat Iblees (Satan's Gates, 1993); Afarit Al Asfalt (The Asphalt Demons, 1996); Wall of Heroism (1998); Mahrous, the Minister's Attaché (1999); I Love Cinema (2004), Bedoon Reqaba (Without Survilence, 2009); and Al Harami wa Al Abeet (The Thief and The Naive, 2013). Her TV series include Ayam Al Mounira (Al Mounira Days, 1994), Wanis' Daily Life (1994), The Game (1999), Devil's Tunnel (2008), The Fall of the Caliphate (2010), Malika fee al-Manfa (Queen in the Exile, 2010), and Heatwave (2013). Among Shaheen's latest films are Restart (2025), Mister Ex (2013), Hazr Tagaoul (Curfew, 2013), and TV series Hesbet Omry (Toil & Pursuit, 2025), Seed El-Nass (Master of the People, 2025), Alfrido (2025), and Be Tolooa Al-Rouh (Backbreaking, 2022). Over the past few years, Shaheen has received several awards and recognitions.
