Man City star 'left out of Club World Cup squad' as Man Utd eye transfer
Manchester City have named their Club World Cup squad with youngster James McAtee overlooked in a move that could lead to his exit with Manchester United among those keen
Manchester City have opted against including James McAtee in their squad for the Club World Cup as their neighbours Manchester United continue to circle. The snub could prove telling as the academy graduate weighs up his future.
City will jet halfway across the world to play in the tournament but won't go with McAtee, who instead has been added to England's pre-tournament training squad ahead of the U21s Euros in Slovakia.
McAtee has enjoyed moments in a City shirt, but is still very much establishing himself. He scored an FA Cup hat-trick several months ago and has also contributed in the Premier League, but won't get the chance to rub shoulders with the squad's senior stars at the FIFA tournament.
As a result potential suitors are beginning to circle and one of those is the Red Devils. Selling direct to the Old Trafford outfit would prove a hugely controversial move, especially as McAtee is tipped to have a bright future.
The Daily Mail reports that Guardiola's decision to overlook him could spell the end of his time on the blue side of Manchester. The Catalan has been honest about the state of affairs and whilst he wants to keep the 22-year-old, he would understand his desire to play regularly.
He said in April: 'For the age, I'd like him to stay. But I understand players want more minutes. He can play different positions but I don't know how the squad will be and we will see.'
Another factor at play is that McAtee's contract expires in 2026 - leaving the City hierarchy to either hand him a new deal or cash in before he becomes a free agent. The academy graduate has excelled on loan in the Championship previously, but would command a higher move were he to head away from the Etihad.
McAtee himself is keen on a move to the Bundesliga, where he's been linked with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen. He's seen first-hand how young English players have thrived in the Germany environment with Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham among them.
Letting McAtee leave would represent a risk for Guardiola, who has copped criticism for allowing City's academy products to leave before giving them a proper shot. Several of them have gone on to excel elsewhere, Morgan Rogers among them.

Fran Kirby has become the second England player to retire just weeks before Sarina Wiegman's side defend their European Championship title in Switzerland. Having represented England at four major tournaments, including starting every game of the Euros triumph in 2022, Kirby joins Mary Earps in bowing out of international football. Earps called time on her own England career last week after losing her starting place to Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, in a move that left Wiegman 'disappointed and sad'. Kirby's decision comes just four weeks out from the tournament – and after she had played in Friday's 6-0 thrashing of Portugal at Wembley. She withdrew from the squad for Tuesday's match against Spain late and told her England team-mates after the 2-1 defeat of her decision to retire. She announced her decision on social media after the match having been told by Wiegman she was unlikely to make the Euros squad. 'After being in the England team since I was 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life,' wrote the 31-year-old Brighton midfielder. 'I didn't ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am it happened. 'It's been the biggest honour to represent my country, one that I had only dreamt about as a young girl. I've played with incredible players, worked with some incredible managers, played in some amazing tournaments and have some irreplaceable memories.' In an interview with the BBC about her retirement, Kirby explained that she had been mulling retirement for more than a year and knew that this summer's Euros would be her last major tournament for England. She added: 'The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad. It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders. It was emotional for both of us but we both respected what each person was saying.' Reacting to the news on Tuesday night, Wiegman said: 'First of all I love working with her. I think she has had an incredible career, which is still going on. She's an amazing player, she's an incredible person too. She did everything to make the squad. She has always been ready to play, ready to perform, helping others, whatever I asked her to do. 'Over time Fran and I have had several conversations. She has been unlucky with injuries too, she always fought back and still had some opportunities to play. I told her she was most likely not going to make the squad, we had these honest conversations. I think she's an inspiration to a lot of people and an example.' Kirby started every game in 2022, represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics after making her international debut in 2014, and finishes her career with 77 caps and 19 goals. She added: 'My mum had a dream of me representing my country, and I'm so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all. I will never, ever forget the noise when my name is read out at a stadium. I was first selected when I was playing in WSL2, I played a part in the game-changing World Cup, winning bronze in 2015, creating some memories of a lifetime. 'Starting in every game and winning the Euros in 2022 was a dream come true, to be a part of change in women's football was one of the best experiences I could have ever imagined. Thank you.'

Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international football with immediate effect after learning that she will not be part of Sarina Wiegman's squad for this summer's European Championship. In interviews with the BBC and ESPN, released shortly after England's 2-1 loss against Spain on Tuesday, the 31-year-old midfielder explained that she had already been planning to retire from England duty after July's Euros but she has brought that decision forward after being told she will not be going to Switzerland. Wiegman will name her final squad of 23 on Thursday. The news is the second sudden retirement by a member of the Lionesses' Euro 2022-winning side in the space of eight days, after Mary Earps' shock announcement in May. Kirby, who has 77 senior international caps and scored 19 goals, had been a key part of the national-team setup since her debut in 2014. Players coming back from injuries, players fighting for positions or minutes or selection and I think that's very positive. 'Some will keep training because they need to train, others will take a couple of days off. Then we move forward and come together get ready for Jamaica, then for France.'
