Fire station out of action twice over staff issues

Yahoo26-02-2025

A Surrey fire station was out of action on two separate occasions in December and January due to staff shortages.
Camberley Fire Station was twice left without an operational crew during change-over periods due to a lack of cover.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the admission came during questions from the public at a recent meeting of Surrey Heath Borough Council.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said the issue was temporary and the service's "response offer to communities" was not affected.
Raising the issue was Derren Martin, who said: "Camberley Fire Station has been closed due to staff shortages, largely because the station is now operating with just one fire engine crewed by four firefighters - a reduction of 30 firefighters since the station opened in 1967."
Mr Martin said the rising population, and fire cover "now at its lowest ever", could cost lives.
Rob Lee, chairman of the council's external partnerships select committee, responding on behalf of the fire service, said: "I would like to reassure the questioner and the public that there was fire and rescue cover in place for the whole of Surrey during periods when Camberley Fire Station was not crewed.
"Whilst the crew who begin and end their shifts at Camberley Fire Station were temporarily not on duty on two occasions between December 2024 and January 2025… this did not affect the services' response offer to communities."
Surrey Fire and Rescue service is managed by Surrey County Council meaning it has overall responsibility.
During the closures, the on-call Chobham Fire Station remained available for deployment.
On both occasions, there were no critical incidents within the Camberley area.

Corolla Wild Horse Fund announces death of colt

COROLLA, N.C. (WAVY) — The Corolla Wild Horse Fund announced the death of a young colt on Wednesday. According to a Facebook post, Donner, who was born in 2023, was found dead with injuries typically found in fights with other horses, including a broken neck. Officials said that while the death of such a young horse is tragic, the behavior is part of natural herd dynamics of wild horses. 'Donner's life was short, but it was wild from start to finish,' the Facebook post stated. 'That is something to be celebrated, even as we grieve. Rest peaceful and free, young man. We will miss you.' Officials remind visitors to give the wild horses space on the beach and to avoid feeding them at all costs. Continue to check for updates. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Volunteers 'devastated' at garden centre closure

Learning disabled volunteers and their families say they are "devastated" a west London community garden centre is set to be closed down. More than 4,500 have signed a petition urging the Hillingdon Council to keep the Rural Activities Garden Centre (RAGC) in Colham open. A group of learning disabled adults help maintain the garden centre, and some have attended for decades and see it as a critical part of their routine, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Hillingdon Council says the centre is making an annual loss of £137,000 a year which is being subsidised by local taxpayers and and volunteers will be offered alternative "learning and developmental opportunities". Terry, who has been volunteering at the garden centre for several years, said he had "stopped leaving the house" before he began working there. Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, he said: "My mum got ill with dementia and I had to look after her, when she died I was suggested to come here, it's now the only place I come to. "If this place closes I won't be doing anything again, it makes me upset." Wayne, a volunteer of over 30 years at the RAGC, says he loves the work and the people he works with. His father Stuart says it is the "one thing that gives them a purpose in life". Without it, he says, many volunteers would be "stuck at home". "All of these people will be devastated," he added. "We all need this place, what it does for people, and the community it brings. We need it." Hillingdon Council says it will continue supporting volunteers by offering horticultural placements in gardens and public areas around the borough's Civic Centre in Uxbridge. The local authority says this will provide "enriched learning and developmental opportunities" and "a wider range of activities than they currently experience at the garden centre". The report on the future of the Rural Activities Garden Centre is due to be will be considered by the council's Cabinet on 26 June. Hillingdon Council said: "We are committed to ensuring all volunteers with assessed social care needs receive enriched learning and developmental opportunities. "Unfortunately, the RAGC's retail operations are not economically viable and we cannot expect residents to subsidise a loss-making garden centre."
