Al-Ahram Weekly5 days ago
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi called on US President Donald Trump to utilize his political influence to end the tragedy in Gaza and allow the entry of humanitarian aid to its starving people.
President El-Sisi made these remarks in a televised address on Monday.
During his speech, the president highlighted Egypt's honourable, sincere, and relentless efforts in supporting the Palestinian people.
'Egyptians, I'm reminding you of this: We do not change. We are committed to finding solutions that de-escalate tensions, bring an end to the war, and lead to a final settlement of the Palestinian cause,' El-Sisi said.
Gaza needs around 600-700 humanitarian aid trucks daily, he added.
Over the past 21 months, Egypt has been committed to facilitating the maximum possible amount of aid into the strip, he noted.

Elham Aboul Fateh Tomorrow, millions will head to the polling stations to elect members of the Senate, following the conclusion of overseas voting, which took place over the past two days in more than 100 countries around the world. Our embassies and consulates witnessed a distinguished turnout from members of the Egyptian community, who affirmed their loyalty towards their homeland and their willingness to contribute to its democratic process. Now it's our turn at home. We have a real opportunity to participate in building the future by choosing our representatives in the Senate. In light of the electoral silence that began yesterday, during which campaigning ceases, this is the time to review the candidates' positions and choose those worthy of trust, based on competence, vision, and the ability to serve the nation. The Senate is not merely a constitutional institution; it is a legislative chamber with a significant role in discussing laws and supporting the state in formulating public policies. Its membership includes figures from diverse fields, including economics, education, law, health, culture, and media. Therefore, carefully selecting members represents an important step in enhancing legislative performance and supporting the state's stability. More than 27,000 polling stations have been set up across all governorates, under full judicial supervision, with comprehensive security, and facilities for the elderly and people with special needs, ensuring a smooth and safe election process for every citizen. Participation in the elections is a national responsibility toward our current and future generations, participation means we are supporting stability. Egyptian women have proven that they can bear the responsibility as President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi calls them "the great women of Egypt," the Egyptian woman, who is the backbone of the Egyptian family, has proven in every situation that she is also the backbone of the nation and its solid pillars. Their participation tomorrow is an extension of their true role in building the nation. At the same time, we hope that future elections will witness a broader diversity of lists and choices, and that parties will compete with clear and serious platforms to satisfy citizens and gain their trust. Democracy thrives when there are multiple alternatives and everyone competes to serve the nation. In the last Senate elections, turnout did not exceed 14%. Today, we need to raise this percentage to prove that we are a people who participate, care, and shape our future. Go out... Participate. Participate for your country. Participate for your children. 3 people die in overnight Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia - War in Ukraine

Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences intercepted or destroyed 112 drones across eight Russian regions and the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula. A drone attack on the Rostov region, on the border with Ukraine, killed one person, acting governor Yuri Slyusar said. Further from the front line, a woman was killed and two other people wounded in a drone strike on business premises in the Penza region, according to regional governor Oleg Melnichenko. In the Samara region, falling drone debris sparked a fire that killed an elderly resident, regional Gov. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said. According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 53 drones and decoys at Ukraine overnight into Saturday. It said that air defences shot down or jammed 45 drones. Eleven people were wounded in an overnight drone strike on the Kharkiv region, Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said Saturday. The reciprocal drone strikes followed a day of mourning in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Friday, after a Russian drone and missile attack killed 31 people, including five children, and wounded over 150. The continued attacks come after U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a shorter deadline — Aug. 8 — for peace efforts to make progress. Trump said Thursday that special envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Russia to push Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in its war with Ukraine and has threatened new economic sanctions if progress is not made. OPEN// FM, US state secretary discuss bolstering bilateral ties

CAIRO/WASHINGTON, July 31 (MENA) - Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had talks on Thursday with US State Secretary Marco Rubio on means of promoting bilateral ties. The two sides also exchanged views on various regional and international issues of mutual interest. Abdelatty conveyed greetings and appreciation from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to US President Donald Trump, highlighting Egypt's pride in the longstanding strategic partnership with the United States. The minister said he is looking forward to continuing close coordination and cooperation with the US administration to further ties politically, militarily, economically, and security-wise, thus contributing to regional security, stability, and peace during this critical stage in the Middle East. He also expressed desire to continue holding regular rounds of the Egypt-US strategic dialogue. They reviewed ways to strengthen economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries. Abdelatty praised the results of the Egypt-US business forum held in Cairo in May with over 50 American companies participating, 12 of which entered the Egyptian market for the first time, reflecting Egypt's commitment to attracting investments and enhancing economic partnerships with the US. Both sides stressed the importance of continuing coordination for new rounds of the joint economic commission meetings and the business forum to broaden economic partnership opportunities. The two sides also reviewed the latest regional developments, topped by the catastrophic situation in Gaza, tragic events in Sudan, and conditions in Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and the Egyptian water security issue. Regarding the Palestinian cause, Minister Abdelatty reiterated the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza to stem bloodshed and ensure humanitarian aid flows amid the enclave's dire conditions under the Israeli blockade. He emphasized the need to adopt a political horizon for a just and sustainable settlement of the Palestinian cause, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the 1967 borderlines with East Jerusalem (Al Quds) as its capital. He expressed hope for continued close US-Egypt cooperation to establish just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the two sides reviewed the situation in Sudan and underlined the importance of ceasefire and humanitarian aid access. Minister Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's support for Sudan's state institutions and respect for its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. Regarding Egyptian water security, Minister Abdelatty conveyed Egypt's concerns about Nile water issues and the importance of adherence to international law regarding shared water resources. He highlighted the need for cooperation to swiftly reach a legally-binding agreement on the operation of the Ethiopian dam, rejecting unilateral Ethiopian actions violating international law. He affirmed Egypt will take all measures permitted under international law to protect its water security. (MENA) M N E/
