Montreal beats New York City FC 1-0 on Victor Loturi's goal to net first home win
MONTREAL (AP) — Victor Loturi scored in the 23rd minute and Montreal won its first home game this season in nine attempts with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC on Saturday night.
Montreal (3-12-5) completed the season sweep over New York (8-7-4) for the first time ever.
Dante Sealy found himself isolated with a defender on the right side of the 18-yard box and he sent in a powerful shot that was spilled to Loturi for a one-touch finish. It was Loturi's first goal for the club.
Montreal had two other good opportunities to double the lead in the second half.
Luca Petrasso was left unmarked in front of the goal following a corner kick, but he was unable to control the bouncing ball. Moments later, Jules-Anthony Vilsaint was denied by a fingertip save from Tomas Romero.
Jonathan Sirois secured his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Montreal will face Inter Miami on July 5 if the Florida side is eliminated from the Club World Cup.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti lauds ‘homegrown' NBA championship team
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Sam Presti put Oklahoma City's first NBA championship team together in an unconventional way. The Thunder general manager didn't make any splashy trades or break the bank in free agency. He didn't replace the coach with a bigger name during the rebuild to get the team over the top. He relied on good-old-fashioned internal development, with a few strategic additions sprinkled in. It worked. Somehow, Oklahoma City claimed the title with the same coach and many of the same players who won 24 games four years ago. 'We have people from Canada, Serbia, the West Coast, the East Coast, middle America, France, Australia, that all come together for a collective goal,' Presti said. 'There's compassion on the team. There's a cowboy toughness, a self-reliance that comes from being homegrown, and an essential sense of goodness.' Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the regular-season and Finals MVP, but there were plenty of challenges. Jalen Williams, a first-time All-Star, was a force in the playoffs despite playing the entire postseason with a ligament tear in his right wrist that will require surgery. Chet Holmgren missed 50 games this season with a pelvic injury. The Thunder were among the league's leaders in games lost to injury. Presti said the key was that the players saw challenges as opportunities. Many took advantage of their additional playing time and were better prepared to contribute during the title run. 'If you want to be the exception, you have to be willing to be exceptional,' Presti said. 'That point was basically aimed at the fact that we have to be the exception to the rule. … The quest to be exceptional is met with having to do a lot of things that are unorthodox, and I felt like the team did that in a lot of ways and we were rewarded for it.' Coach Mark Daigneault, like the team, is an unconventional success story. He coached the team's G-League affiliate before taking over the Thunder. After winning fewer than 25 games his first two years as Thunder head coach, he's now a champion. Presti said Daigneault has improved over the years, and his approach to learning helped the young team stay focused. He said the team never got overwhelmed by circumstances, like losing Game 1 in both the Western Conference semifinals against Denver and the NBA Finals against Indiana, or falling apart in Game 6 at Indiana. 'I think the team saw those as, 'Hey, this is just the next thing in front of us that we have to accomplish to achieve the goals of being a great team,' and I don't think anyone was inconvenienced or saw that as a catastrophic event,' Presti said. 'It's like, 'Well, I guess this is part of the thing we have to get better at,' and they met the moment.' Two additions were guard Alex Caruso, who was acquired in a trade with Chicago last summer, and center Isaiah Hartenstein, who was added through free agency. Those veterans played key roles in the playoffs and helped Presti get named Executive of the Year. But we're going to have to fight some human nature there, but I think we have the people and the characters and the program to fight for that. Phillies slugger Bryce Harper is reinstated after injured list stint with sore wrist
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies slugger Bryce Harper was reinstated Monday ahead of Philadelphia's opener against San Diego after a stint on the injured list with right wrist inflammation. Harper went on the 10-day injured list on June 6. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He also missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider. Harper said when he went on the IL that he felt pain in the wrist during a large portion of last season, when he hit 30 homers while helping the Phillies win the NL East. The Phillies entered Monday's game in first place in the division. They are 13-14 overall this season without Harper in the lineup. After Club World Cup heatwave in US, soccer players' union warns of higher risk at next World Cups
GENEVA (AP) — Extreme heat faced by soccer players at the Club World Cup in the United States will likely be an even bigger problem at the next two men's World Cups, their global union FIFPRO warned on Monday. The monthlong club event is being played in a heatwave in 11 American cities and union officials praised FIFA for helping to better protect players with cooling measures at games. Still, FIFA did not take FIFPRO's pre-tournament advice to look at postponing kickoff times by several hours on the hottest days — a move that would be even more complicated at a World Cup with more commercial pressures in play and more games scheduled each day. Six of the 16 World Cup host cities next year in the U.S., Canada and Mexico are judged by FIFPRO as 'extremely high risk' for heat stress injury to players among the 48 teams. The highest risk cities are Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas, Miami and Monterrey though some have indoor, air-conditioned stadiums. 'We are anticipating that this problem is going to be even more crucial for the coming years,' FIFPRO medical director Vincent Gouttebarge told reporters in a briefing call. The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted in June and July by Spain, Portugal and Morocco where fewer stadiums are enclosed and cooled, and temperatures in some cities on Monday were at or above 100 degrees F (38 C). By 2030 the hot weather prospects for the tournament there 'is even perhaps worse than what we have been facing so far,' Gouttebarge cautioned. FIFPRO said extra heat mitigation measures could include 20-minute halftime breaks instead of 15 to help lower players' core temperatures, and cooling breaks in play every 15 minutes. Currently, breaks are taken in the 30th minute of each half. FIFA was approached for comment. FIFA has reacted during the Club World Cup to lower the threshold for insisting on cooling or water breaks, plus placing more water and towels around the edge of the field. 'We are partially happy because FIFA have been quite responsive once the tournament was underway,' FIFPRO CEO-like general secretary Alex Phillips said. Better shading benches for the substitutes and more hydration breaks are also preferred by the union, which has national affiliates representing players in about 70 countries. 'All these practical things is something that we must do better,' said Alexander Bielefeld, FIFPRO strategy director, though adding 'at some point that probably won't be enough.'
