Illegal shanties in Adarsh Colony: Tens of thousands rendered homeless in UT admn's demolition action to reclaim 12 acres
The colony came up nearly two decades ago on approximately six acres of government land behind the Furniture Market in Sector 53, and 54. The estimated value of the encroached land is Rs 250 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar stated that 'this drive is not just about reclaiming land but sending a clear message that illegal encroachments will not be tolerated. The reclaimed land will now be utilised in accordance with planned urban development goals to benefit the larger community'.
The operation commenced in the early hours of the morning, in the vigil of Chandigarh Police, which deployed its personnel to maintain law and order and to facilitate the safe and smooth execution of the drive.
'The entire operation was conducted under the direct supervision of senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration and police, reflecting the administration's firm resolve to maintain urban discipline and uphold the rule of law,' an official of Chandigarh Administration said.
The official added that this initiative is part of a larger anti-encroachment campaign aimed at reclaiming government land and safeguarding public spaces from illegal occupations. The administration claimed it had served multiple notices and warnings to unauthorised occupants in the recent past, providing ample opportunity for voluntary compliance.
Despite previous notices, several structures and makeshift dwellings had continued to encroach upon government land. Acting decisively, the administration said it mobilised all necessary machinery, including earth movers and support teams, to remove these illegal constructions, added the official.
Only one slum now: Shahpur Colony in Sector 38
Following the demolition of Adarsh Colony, only one slum — Shahpur Colony in Sector 38 — will remain, which has about 300 shanties spread across four acres of government land, valued at Rs 150 crore.
Earlier, on May 6, the UT Estate Office had demolished Janta Colony in Sector 25, reclaiming around 10 acres of government land worth Rs 350 crore. The reclaimed site has been earmarked for a dispensary, primary school, community centre and shopping area.
Prior to that, on April 24, over 1,000 makeshift structures were razed in Sanjay Colony in Industrial Area, Phase 1. The colony had been encroaching on nearly six acres of prime government land.
The UT administration has been working to make Chandigarh slum-free since the early 2000s. In 2006, it launched a rehabilitation initiative under the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme, earmarking 356 acres for the construction of 25,728 flats intended to house 23,841 families from 18 unauthorised colonies.
Over the years, the administration has carried out multiple demolition drives. In 2013, it razed Colony Number 5, followed by Colony Number 4 in 2022.

Around 15 days after the terror attack at a project site in Niger that left two Indian workers dead, the body of Ganesh Karmali, a resident of Jharkhand's Bokaro district, reached his village on Sunday evening. The family, however, has now raised concerns over an alleged disparity in compensation from his employer. Another man from Jammu and Kashmir, who served as the company's safety manager, was abducted. Ganesh's daughter, Sapna Kumari, said that while Krishna's body was repatriated earlier and his family reportedly received Rs 27 lakh in compensation, her family was promised only Rs 10 lakh. Ganesh's wife, Yashoda Devi, told The Indian Express, 'If both were killed in the same attack and worked at the same site, why are we being treated differently? My husband had told me that the company owed him Rs 40 lakh.' A company representative, Mannar Ansar, said it did not directly employ Ganesh and that he was employed by a subcontractor. Ganesh was not on the company's payroll or on a visa sponsored by it, the representative claimed. 'We helped repatriate his body purely on humanitarian grounds after a request from the Indian embassy,' Ansar said, adding, 'He was not our employee. Krishna was, and he has been compensated under company policy with all applicable benefits, including insurance and gratuity.' Ansar said the Rs 10 lakh given to Ganesh's family came from the subcontractor working under them, not from the parent company managing the Niger project. The subcontractor under whom Ganesh was employed, LK Swamy, claimed that Transrail officials verbally urged him not to escalate the issue. 'They told me not to file any complaints, or it would create problems. But I'm just a small-time labour contractor,' he said, adding that he is ready to cooperate if approached by government officials or family representatives with documents. Swamy said that so far, he had paid the family around Rs 3 lakh from his own pocket, including Rs 50,000 for the daughter's wedding and Rs 17,000 for funeral related expenses. He said he had committed to providing a total compensation of Rs 12 lakh over time. 'I'm not a big contractor. I've only worked under their registration for two months. The company is now pressuring me to take full responsibility, but I didn't even issue the visa or ticket, all of that was arranged by Transrail Lighting Ltd,' he claimed. He also said that all of Ganesh's documents, including his visa, flight tickets, and landing permit, mentioned Transrail's name and address. 'Why did they pay Rs 27 lakh in Krishna Kumar's case from UP and refuse to take responsibility in this one?' he asked. Shikha Lakra, the officer in charge of the Jharkhand's Migrant Workers Control Room, operating under the state Labour Department, confirmed that Ganesh worked for Transrail Lighting Ltd. She acknowledged that the compensation in such cases is often minimal and insufficient. 'Under the state government's policy, Rs 5 lakh is to be provided to the family, which will be done,' she said. Visakhapatnam: Following the illegal surrogacy and baby selling racket being exposed at Universal Srushti Fertility Centres, District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) P Jagadeeswara Rao issued a warning to the hospital management of fertility centres that stringent action would be taken if they fail to adhere to norms. As the illegal surrogacy, baby-selling racket busted in Hyderabad, the health officials in Visakhapatnam got on their toes and launched raids in various fertility centres. Violating norms and operating the IVF centres without license, the administrators of the Shrishti Universal Fertility Centre in Secunderabad cheated childless couples both in AP and Telangana. As the Hyderabad police exposed a surrogacy scam, police mentioned that victims have been coming forward to file complaints in the Telugu states. A childless couple approached Dr Namrata of Srushti Fertility Centre for surrogacy. The infant was bought for Rs 90,000 but sold as an IVF child for Rs 35 lakh to the couple by producing fake documents. The infant was reportedly bought from a couple belonging to the economically weaker section but given to the childless couple as an IVF child. Busting the racket, the Hyderabad police took eight people into custody, including the prime accused in the case A Namratha of Universal Srushti Fertility Centre. As per the post, the man and his parents were falsely accused of charges under three legal sections. They were 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives), Domestic Violence, and CrPC 125 (maintenance claim). 'My guy jumped into the Legal Arena Party-In-Person, i.e., represented himself instead of hiring an advocate and got both DV and 125 dismissed without getting any maintenance order," read the statement from his friend. The man also 'rejected all drafts of MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) from his wife's side and drafted his own MoU and MCD Petition", finally getting a divorce as per his terms and conditions.
