Anna Wintour steps down as Vogue Editor-in-Chief after 37 years
Anna Wintour is set to step down as editor-in-chief of Vogue's American edition, bringing an end to her nearly 40-year reign at the helm of the iconic fashion publication.
Throughout her 37-year tenure, Wintour not only oversaw the daily operations of the magazine but also cemented her status as a global cultural force.
She forged close ties with the world's most influential fashion houses, championed emerging designers, and became a fixture in the front row of runways from New York to Paris, always behind her signature sunglasses.
Her formidable presence even helped inspire Meryl Streep's portrayal in The Devil Wears Prada and, perhaps most famously, she transformed the Met Gala into fashion's most unmissable night.
Wintour, 75, will reportedly remain a central force at Condé Nast, continuing in her roles as Global Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director of Vogue, meaning she will still oversee a broad portfolio that spans Vanity Fair, Glamour, Allure, and GQ.
Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch noted that Wintour has effectively been juggling three major roles since 2020 and that stepping back from the US title was both timely and necessary.
'This will enable her to make time for everyone who needs her,' he said.
The company is expected to appoint a new head of editorial content for the American edition.
Wintour's decades-long influence reshaped Vogue into a modern fashion powerhouse. Appointed creative director in 1983, she went on to lead British Vogue as Editor in Chief from 1985 to 1987, before returning to helm the American edition.
She modernised the magazine by featuring celebrities on its covers and mixing high fashion with more affordable street style. She championed emerging designers, including Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, and broadened the brand's reach by adding new titles around the world.
