Sheikh Hasina brings up St Martin's island, accusing Yunus of 'selling' Bangladesh to US

Hindustan Times26-05-2025

Amid the political turmoil in Bangladesh, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina has accused interim head Muhammad Yunus of "selling" the nation to the United States.
The former PM and Awami League leader's social media post come after reports of Yunus mulling resignation surfaced. While these reports were dismissed by close advisors to the interim head, the reports sparked fresh protests across the nation.
In a lengthy Facebook post, the ousted leader accused Yunus of wanting to sell the nation and highlighted Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination after the founding leader refused to cede St Martin's Island to Washington.
"When America wanted St. Martin's Island, my father did not agree. He had to give his life. And that was my destiny. Because I never had the thought of selling the country to stay in power," Sheikh Hasina wrote on the social media platform.
As the turmoil in Bangladesh continues, here's a look at what St Martin's Island is and why exactly it's so significant to the nation.
St Martin's Island is located in the northeastern region of the Bay of Bengal. The island is close to the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar and stands nine kilometres away from the southern tip of Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula.
With a population of around 8,000 people, the Daily Sun states that St Martin's Island is a prominent tourist attraction. Along with this, it serves as Bangladesh's only coral island.
Five thousand years ago, the island was part of the Teknaf peninsula. However, as time passed, the island submerged into the sea. About 450 years ago, the southern suburbs of the island resurfaced, which we now know as St Martin's island.
The island, which was annexed by the British during in the 1900s, became a part of Pakistan after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1948. However, in 1971, Bangladesh retained the island after its liberation from Pakistan.
Over the years, St Martin's Island has been a key economic and environmental asset for the country. With access to resources such as fish, oil and gas, the island also falls into Bangladesh's Exclusive Economic Zone.
Additionally, the island being a popular tourist attraction also contributes to Bangladesh's economy.
St Martin's Island's strategic value and location make it a popular region. With eyes from the US, China and India, a potential military base on this island would provide any country with oversight of the Bay of Bengal.
The island is also near the Strait of Malacca, which is one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes. Furthermore, St Martin's Island also gives global powers such as the US, more access and eyes in the Indo-Pacific region.
As per reports, the US has always expressed its interest in the key island and wanted to set up military bases.
Shortly after her ouster, Sheikh Hasina alleged that a "white man offered her a hassle-free election" in January 2024, provided "she allowed a foreign country to establish an air base in Bangladesh territory.' After her claims in 2024, the US State Department denied any intentions to acquire an island.
However, unconfirmed reports add that the US' interest in the island recently increased due to China's growing influence in the region, especially after Beijing's assistance in building Dhaka's first submarine base - BNS Sheikh Hasina. Furthermore, China's Belt and Road initiative, which goes through Bangladesh and Myanmar, has also caught Washington's eye.

CBI seeks high court nod to chargesheet Nirav Modi's brother-in-law Maiank Mehta

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday sought permission from the Bombay High Court to file a chargesheet against fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi's brother-in-law, Maiank Mehta, stating that its investigation is complete and the chargesheet is ready. Advocates Kuldeep Patil and Saili Dhuru, representing the agency, submitted the request before a bench of Justices AS Gadkari and Rajesh S advocate Amit Desai, appearing for Maiank Mehta, opposed the CBI's request and sought interim protection from coercive action not just for Maiank but also for his wife, Purvi the court declined to extend the protection to her. "Today there is no apprehension of her arrest as she is not here in India. There is no question of protecting her," the bench said. Purvi Mehta, a Belgian national and Nirav Modi's sister, was chargesheeted by the CBI in March this year in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. Both she and Maiank Mehta were previously listed as wanted accused by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).In exchange for full disclosure, the ED accepted Maiank and Purvi Mehta as approvers and granted them a pardon under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The special PMLA court even allowed Maiank, a British national based in Hong Kong, to return home after he promised to cooperate with the proceedings. However, the CBI has consistently opposed his travel and has not accepted him as an CBI has alleged that Purvi Mehta was one of the beneficiaries of the funds acquired through fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LOUs) issued by PNB at Nirav Modi's behest. While Maiank Mehta was questioned several times by the CBI, he was not named in the chargesheet due to a Bombay High Court order directing the agency not to take coercive action against him. That protection has been in effect since July 25, 2022, and the CBI has been seeking its removal Purvi Mehta has filed a petition in the High Court seeking protection from arrest and prosecution by the CBI, arguing that she has already been pardoned in the ED's case. She has also sought the quashing of the chargesheet filed against her or, at the very least, a stay on proceedings until her petition is court has scheduled the next hearing in the matter for July Watch

Protests greet Muhammad Yunus in London; lawyers prepare to refer him to ICC

LONDON: Protests greeted Bangladesh chief adviser Muhammad Yunus outside his hotel Tuesday morning. Hundreds of British Bangladeshis who are members of the UK branch of Awami league and associated organisations gathered outside the Dorchester in Mayfair and called for him to "go back", accusing his administration of human rights violations, lynchings, killings, and deteriorating law and order in Bangladesh. Protesters held placards that accused him of being the "architect of mob rule, freeing jihadists and jailing patriots" and demanded his resignation. An Awami League politician who fled to India as false cases were registered against him and his house was burnt down after Yunus's caretaker govt came to office was at the protest site. He told TOI: "We are protesting against the illegitimate, unconstitutional govt of Bangladesh. We want free, fair and inclusive elections that include Awami League. We are not allowed to protest in Bangladesh... Millions of people with Awami League are internally displaced and many face false cases. " While Yunus is in London to receive the harmony award from King Charles, top lawyers, including Steven Powles KC, have been engaged to prepare a communication to the International Criminal Court to refer the Yunus govt for crimes against humanity.

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's son visits India to meet her

New Delhi: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina's US-based son, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, is in India to meet his mother, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Wazed, who has emerged as a key voice for the Awami League party, arrived in the country ahead of Eid-ul-Adha in order to celebrate the festival with his mother, currently living in self-exile in New Delhi, the people said on condition of anonymity. Hasina fled to India after the dramatic collapse of the Awami League government in the face of nationwide protests led by student groups last August. She is currently living in a safe house in the heart of the Indian capital. There was no word from Indian officials on the visit by Wazed, an American citizen who is also known by his nickname of Joy. 'Hasina's son is visiting India primarily to celebrate Eid with his mother. He is the first visitor she has received since she arrived in India in August last year,' a person close to the Awami League said. The people said there are currently no plans for Wazed to participate in any public events. Details of his itinerary too are not known, they said. The Indian side is yet to respond to a request from Bangladesh's interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to extradite Hasina, who is facing charges in multiple criminal cases registered against her. Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal indicted Hasina earlier this month for ordering a police crackdown on protestors last year, and directed authorities to present her before the panel on June 16. Relations between the Indian government and Bangladesh's caretaker administration are currently at an all-time low and the two sides have clashed on Dhaka's handling of the repression on Bangladesh's religious minorities.
