''Bringing the fun to them': Families R Us group hosts block party in Prospect neighborhood

Yahoo13-07-2025
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Prospect youth were playing musical chairs while a pop song played Saturday.
Flood City Youth Fitness Academy's Dazzling Divas were dancing in lockstep – and Ramel Malphurs, 9, was getting a Batman mask hand-painted on his face.
"This is about bringing the fun to them," said Kim Murray, one of the Families R Us co-organizers.
Saturday's event brought the party to the Prospect Housing Community – and it's just one in a series of neighborhood block parties planned across the city.
The grassroots Families R Us group formed after the event's previous lead organizer, Hope 4 Johnstown, was charged by the state Attorney Generals Office on to an unrelated, alleged sporting event ticket scam.
Families R Us organizers partnered with a list of city organizations, including the YMCA, the 1889 Foundation, Vision Together and the Greater Johnstown School District to ensure five scheduled youth events remained on track.
"We know these neighborhoods depend on these events every summer," Murray said, noting its become tradition in communities such as Prospect.
Malika Malphurs of Johnstown praised the event Saturday.
"This gives the kids something to do and it brings communities together," she said.
Nearby, Queen-Poetri Dozier was painting a super hero design on her stepson Ramel's face, while her daughter Myraclelove, 3, waited for her turn.
Ramel showed off his new mask before turning his attention to a twin set of bounce houses.
Arabella Cooper, 9, was climbing on a swing set nearby while Vision Together Executive Director Rob Forcey was flipping a sizzling griddle full of hamburgers.
"There's no community without 'U' and 'I,' " said Dozier, an event volunteer.
Murray said that certainly applied Saturday. Greater Johnstown School District officials and Vision Together donated cases of burgers and hot dogs, while 1889 Foundation donated buns, she said.
Nearby, Outreach Specialist Senda Harvey of The Backpack Project was with a bowl full of apples – but she was also offering families help throughout the school year.
The local nonprofit coordinates with Cambria County schools to ensure kids don't go hungry – but Harvey said the group recognizes some families can slip through the cracks.
The block parties serve as a perfect opportunity to reach them in their own neighborhoods, she said.
"We want to make sure kids are fed because you can't learn in school if you are hungry," Harvey said.
Organizers plan each event to host local organizations like theirs at each block party.
"This is our chance to let the community know we can help, regardless of their income level," Senda said.
Murray said blocl party volunteers knocked on doors Saturday morning to remind families about the event.
"Some of these kids don't have the same opportunities (for vacations or trips to amusement parks)," Murray said. "So something like this, they look forward to it."
The group's next event is planned for July 26 at Johnstown Housing Authority's Oakhurst basketball court from noon to 4 p.m.

Maxwell's attorneys wrote in a Supreme Court petition obtained by PEOPLE that she should have received immunity as part of Epstein's controversial deal with federal prosecutors that they claim shields her from prosecution. Epstein served just over a year in prison after pleading guilty in 2008 to state prostitution charges, following an agreement with the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida. As part of the deal, federal prosecutors dropped the charges against Epstein as long as he pleaded guilty to state charges. According to Maxwell's attorneys, the non-prosecution agreement stated that 'the United States also agrees that it will not institute any criminal charges against any potential co-conspirators of Epstein." Maxwell's attorneys contend that Maxwell is covered by that agreement. "...This case is about what the government promised, not what Epstein did," the attorneys wrote. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals previously denied Maxwell's petition to have her conviction overturned, leading to her bid for the Supreme Court to intervene. Read the original article on People

Two children killed at Miami sailing camp when barge hit boat, authorities say

Two children have died and two more are in critical condition after a barge struck their boat and sent them overboard during a sailing camp in Miami on Monday, authorities said. All six people on the sailing boat were pulled from the water by emergency services, and four children were taken to hospital where two were pronounced dead on arrival, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Strasburg, a spokesman for the US Coast Guard. The six — one adult and five children — were in their last week of the sailing camp for youngsters aged seven to 15, according to the Miami Yacht Club. 'The entire MYC family is devastated by this terrible tragedy,' said Emily Copeland, the commodore of the yacht club, in a statement. Two of the six who were rescued were in 'good condition', Mr Strasburg said. Last year, there were more than 550 deaths in recreational boating in the US, of which 43 were caused by vessels crashing into each other, according to coast guard statistics. The boats collided near Star Island, which runs between Miami Beach and Miami in Biscayne Bay, said Arielle Callender, a regional spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in a statement. Local television stations showed first responders, some in scuba diving gear, in boats around what appears to be a barge. The coast guard is investigating the crash.

Sister of Idaho murder victim says she was set to be ‘arrested' for statement at Bryan Kohberger's sentencing

Alivea Goncalves revealed she was bracing to be arrested as she addressed the man who fatally stabbed four University of Idaho students, including her younger sister, Kaylee Goncalves. Bryan Kohberger, 30, was sentenced to life in prison last week after he pleaded guilty to murdering Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in their off-campus home on November 13, 2022. Judge Steven Hippler handed Kohberger four consecutive life sentences without the chance of parole and a decade for burglary. At his sentencing, the victims' loved ones had a chance to address the court and Kohberger. Alivea Goncalves used the opportunity to lay into her sister's killer, demanding he 'sit up straight' as she labeled him a 'sociopath, psychopath, murderer' in a speech that earned applause from others in the courtroom. 'The truth is, you're basic,' Alivea Goncalves told Kohberger. 'Let me be very clear: Don't ever try to convince yourself you matter just because someone finally said your name out loud. I see through you.' 'You want the truth? Here's the one you'll hate the most: If you hadn't attacked them in their sleep, in the middle of the night, like a pedophile, Kaylee would've kicked your f***ing ass,' she added. Alivea Goncalves told ABC News she was 'prepared to be arrested that day.' 'I'm not joking, I think that every single one of us were,' she said in an interview that aired Monday. 'Man, was he mad,' she added. 'That was obviously a big point of why I did what I did, to make him feel small.' Kaylee Goncalves's parents also unleashed on Kohberger. Her mother, Kristi Goncalves, told Kohberger he is 'nothing,' calling him the 'property of the state of Idaho' and wishing him a life of 'misery.' Steve Goncalves, her father, similarly told Kohberger that 'nobody cares' about him. 'From this moment, we'll forget you,' Steve Goncalves said. 'You tried to plant fear, you tried to divide us. You failed. You united everyone in their disgust for you.' Alivea Goncalves said she researched Kohberger ahead of the speech, which she gave from memory to maintain eye contact with her sister's killer. 'I mean, I stalked the stalker,' she told ABC News. 'I found everything that I could from him online from the beginning of time to now. It fueled me to know that I got you pegged. I had one shot at it, and I was going to make the most of it.' She also revealed she cut some remarks from her speech after realizing Kohberger's mother and sister were in the courtroom. "I didn't anticipate his mother and sister being there," Alivea Goncalves said. "And I had specific lines that were directed towards his relationship with his mother and directed towards the shame that he has caused his family, and how the ultimate move of a coward is for him to sit behind bars while the rest of his family has to bear the real weight, the shame of what he's done." Judge Steven Hippler was emotional during the hearing and called the murders acts of 'unspeakable evil.' Kohberger, who has rarely spoken in court, declined to give a statement at the sentencing and his motive remains unknown. "The more we struggle to seek explanation for the unexplainable, the more power and control we give to him," Hippler said. "In my view, the time has now come to end Mr. Kohberger's 15 minutes of fame." The Goncalves family previously condemned the plea deal that prosecutors offered Kohberger, which allowed him to admit to the crimes and avoid the death penalty. The trial was set to begin in August, just over a month after he accepted the deal. 'We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho,' the family said in a June statement. 'They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected. We appreciate all your love and support.'
