PWD reviewing PCA report before carrying out East-West Highway repairs
He said the PCA was essential for identifying damaged pavement sections and determining the most suitable maintenance methods to ensure that available allocations were utilised optimally.
"For the Gerik–Jeli stretch of the JRTB, the PCA has been conducted since March 13 using advanced technologies such as the Multi Laser Profiler and Falling Weight Deflectometer.
"We began the assessment earlier this year, and it is now in its final stage.
"Based on the PCA report, we will use the existing allocation of RM55 million for repair works. If that is insufficient, we will apply for additional funding," he told reporters after launching the annual general meeting of the Kelantan chapter of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association here today.
Roslan said that it was impossible to repair the entire route in a short period due to the high cost and potential disruption to other infrastructure projects.
"In this regard, we agree with the suggestion made by the Perak menteri besar, which aligns with PWD's aspirations.
"We have long had plans in place, but it must be understood that the country's funding system follows a 'whole of nation' approach, where allocations are distributed comprehensively and according to annual priorities.
"God willing, with the support from the state government and emphasis from the works minister, we have submitted an application for phased improvements," he said.
The 215km JRTB, which links Gerik in Perak to Jeli in Kelantan, has been identified as a strategic route frequently damaged due to weather conditions and heavy traffic flow.
Roslan said any road repair works would be carried out prudently to avoid overlap or interference with other ongoing development projects.
"We want every ringgit spent to have the best possible impact for the people," he said.

He said the ministry has submitted a funding request to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He added that the highway's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Over 1,000 accident blackspots identified nationwide for safety upgrades
TUMPAT: More than 1,000 high-risk accident blackspots have been identified nationwide, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Public Works Department (JKR) conducted a thorough review of federal roads with sharp bends, structural damage, and inadequate lighting. 'We have identified more than 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide,' said Nanta. He noted that these locations face multiple issues, including poor nighttime visibility requiring proper lighting solutions. Over 300 solar lights have already been installed along the East-West Highway (RTB) to improve safety. Additional solar lights will be placed at identified accident-prone areas and sharp bends soon. Nanta shared these updates after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry terminal. The event was attended by Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub. The ministry has requested extra funding to speed up solar light installations for enhanced road safety. Regarding the new ferry, Nanta emphasised its role beyond transportation, calling it a vital link between Malaysia and Thailand. 'It facilitates movement, strengthens trade, and nurtures cultural ties and kinship,' he said. The previous Sri Tanjong ferry served reliably for 34 years before being replaced. Works Ministry identifies over 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide

He said the Public Works Department (JKR) had carried out a comprehensive review of federal roads with sharp bends, structural damage or without adequate lighting, "We have identified more than 1,000 accident blackspots nationwide. We found that these sites have various issues, including poor lighting. "Recently, we installed over 300 solar-powered lights on the East-West Highway and they are functioning well. More will be installed at accident spots and sharp bends," he said after launching the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry at the JKR Pengkalan Kubor Ferry terminal. Narathiwat Deputy Governor Amirut Bua-On and Kelantan JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub also attended the event. Nanta said the ministry had also applied for additional funds to accelerate the installation of solar lights at identified locations. On the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry, Nanta stated that the service connecting Pengkalan Kubor with Takbai, southern Thailand, is more than just a mode of transportation but serves as a vital link uniting the two border communities. "It also facilitates movement, strengthens trade and nurtures cultural ties and kinship. The previous Sri Tanjong ferry faithfully served for 34 years without fail. "Therefore, the replacement with Sri Tanjong 1 is a timely and wise move – not only to ensure the continuity of more efficient services but also to align with future needs," he said. The Sri Tanjong 1 ferry can carry up to 58 passengers and six crewmembers, eight light vehicles or a bus with a capacity of 44 passengers. It was built at a cost of RM7.90mil and completed on Feb 28 before it was handed over to JKR on March 11. "It is set to play a pivotal role as a catalyst for safer and more efficient cross-border mobility and connectivity, while supporting the socio-economic activities of the people. "I am confident that with its advanced operational capabilities and improved capacity, the Sri Tanjong 1 ferry will provide a more comprehensive service experience to the people. More importantly, it will catalyse local economic growth, especially in the Tumpat district and border areas," he said.
