Kaden Wetjen eyes increased role with Iowa football, WR depth

USA Today23-07-2025
As Iowa football's 2025-26 season is just under seven weeks away, senior wide receiver Kaden Wetjen spoke with the media recently and discussed how he plans to build off an outstanding campaign with the Hawkeyes' special teams unit last year.
Last season, the 5-foot-9, 196-pound native of Williamsburg, Iowa, returned 26 kickoffs for a total of 727 yards, averaging 28.0 yards per return, including a sensational 100-yard kickoff return score against Missouri in the Music City Bowl.
In the punt return game, Wetjen returned 26 punts, averaging 12.6 yards per return, along with an 85-yard punt return touchdown against Northwestern.
As a result of his stellar special teams play that totaled a Big Ten and nationwide-leading 1,055 combined return yardage, Wetjen won the 2024 Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year, the 2024 Jet Award given to the nation's top returner, and was named a first-team All-American.
While Wetjen was not as involved as a receiver, with a total of just three receptions for 46 yards last season, he said he has goals for a much-improved 2025 campaign at the position that could mirror his special teams' skills.
"To do the same thing I did at return. Have a big year and create a lot of production, that's the plan. And we have a bunch of other guys in the room who can do the same thing as well. And I'm super excited to see everybody work," Wetjen said.
Wetjen was then asked how the depth at wide receiver has helped him work towards achieving his goals at the position, which he answered by saying that Iowa has significantly improved the group over the offseason through competition on the depth chart and in practice.
"That's the best part," Wetjen added. "You got guys who are challenging you for your spot. I mean, like I said, there's gonna be a bunch of guys who will play, and we're just making each other better every day."
With the Hawkeyes revamping their offensive capabilities for second-year coordinator Tim Lester over the offseason, highlighted by the transfer additions of quarterback Mark Gronowski, wide receiver Sam Phillips, and offensive linemen Bryce George and George Nahas, Iowa has the potential for a breakout 2025-26 campaign that fans have dreamed of for years.
Iowa opens the season on Aug. 30 against FCS-level Albany from Kinnick Stadium at 5 p.m. CT on FS1.

ESPN sprinkles money on Iowa Hawkeyes as a bet to make the College Football Playoff

The calendar has turned to August, and that means that the hopes and dreams of a special season are alive for college football teams across the country. The Iowa Hawkeyes have visions of putting together a special year, and it starts this month with their season opener on August 30th. Iowa opens the year agains UAlbany inside Kinnick Stadium on August 30, and it is the first step in a long journey if Iowa wants to break through for the College Football Playoff. With a rather manageable schedule, despite being headlined by a trio of season-defining games, the Hawkeyes are finding some love from ESPN as they are listed among teams to consider betting on to make the College Football Playoff. Iowa to make the playoff (+750) If there was ever a year to sprinkle on the Hawkeyes to make the playoff, this might be it. Their schedule is tough on paper, but it's spaced out in a way that could play to their strengths. Penn State and Oregon come to Kinnick, and the early road stretch at Iowa State, Rutgers and Wisconsin are all winnable if South Dakota State transfer QB Mark Gronowski hits the ground running. The Hawkeyes avoid Michigan and Ohio State, and if Gronowski lives up to his FCS hero status, this team might finally have enough juice on offense to complement Phil Parker's always-stingy defense. Iowa's special teams' unit is elite, their offensive line is seasoned and Ferentz's teams rarely beat themselves. This is not a team built to win with style points, but if they continue to grind out wins and hit November with momentum, this Black and Gold playoff ticket could cash. And let's be honest, if Iowa does sneak into the Playoff, it won't be on the back of 12 punts and a prayer. This year's offense might actually have some teeth. - Pamela Maldonado, ESPN I promise your computer isn't broken. It isn't playing the same storyline on repeat. That is just the reality of the Iowa Hawkeyes entering every year since we have entered the 2020s. It comes down to the offense. The other units are lights out. The offense is what can make or break this season. This year, that group has some more talent infused into it than in years past, and Mark Gronowski headlines that. If he can elevate Iowa's passing game to even middle-of-the-pack with some firepower and an already stout offensive line, they will have even more success creating lanes for the ground game. If both of those happen, who knows, the Hawkeyes could find themselves dancing. Fantasy Football Draft Rankings 2025: Justin Boone's Top Wide Receivers

Justin Boone won the FantasyPros Most Accurate Expert Award in 2019 and has eight top-10 finishes in the competition. He now brings his rankings acumen to the Yahoo Fantasy audience after recently joining the team as an analyst. He will consistently be refining his draft rankings during training camps, the preseason and leading up to the season. When news breaks, rankings updates will be reflected here, so bookmark this page and get ready for your drafts! And be sure to follow the links below to see his latest redraft rankings at every position. Latest WR Updates Rashee Rice will be a polarizing player in drafts now that he's been sentenced for his role in a car crash. There's been conflicting reports about a possible suspension, with ESPN's Adam Schefter suggesting a multi-game ban is likely and others like Mark Maske of The Washington Post citing sources that say it's premature to conclude Rice will be suspended. Chiefs beat writer Matt Derrick was told by people within the organization that they believe Rice could be forced to sit out 2-4 games. I always encourage people to follow Football Guys' Drew Davenport, who does an excellent job analyzing all aspects of legal cases that involve fantasy players. From my view, I still want to get Rice on as many teams as possible this season. I'm willing to find a replacement for the opening weeks, if it means I'll get a potential fantasy WR1 in the fourth round or later. It all comes down to how much risk you're willing to accept. After missing 10 games last season due to a dislocated ankle, Chris Godwin carried some extra risk with his fantasy profile in 2025. His outlook took a turn for the worst when ESPN's Jenna Laine recently reported that Godwin underwent a second procedure on his ankle this spring. The veteran is currently on the PUP list and his status for the start of the season is unknown. When you combine that with Bucs' first-rounder Emeka Egbuka shining in camp, it's forced me to move Godwin down into the WR4/flex range with Egbuka now ahead of him. As I said on the Fantasy Forecast a few weeks ago, Egbuka is one of the best values in fantasy drafts. You may notice that a couple of overqualified No. 2 receivers — Rome Odunze and Jaylen Waddle — continue to move up my rankings. The combination of talent, opportunity and positive training camp buzz points towards them taking on bigger roles this year and possibility emerging as their team's top target if the older veterans on their rosters (DJ Moore, Tyreek Hill) drop off in any way. Odunze and Waddle are safe fantasy WR3s with very high ceilings.
