Republic of Ireland well beaten by USA in friendly

Yahoo16 hours ago

A depleted Republic of Ireland proved no match for the United States as they succumbed to the hosts in Friday's friendly in the high altitude of Denver.
Shorn of a host of regulars including rested captain Katie McCabe, and the injured Megan Campbell and Denise O'Sullivan, it was always going to be a tough task against the world's number one team and so it proved.

Avery Patterson, Sam Coffey, Rose Lavelle and Alyssa Thompson were all on target for Emma Hayes' hosts.
Despite the USA resting all of their European-based stars aside from Chelsea's Naomi Girma, they were quick to assert themselves.
They threatened from the off with Thompson denied by Courtney Brosnan from point-blank range, before the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper - captaining the team on her 50th cap - turned a low Claire Hutton effort around the post.
However, the opener was coming and in the 18th minute, Lavelle picked up possession from a short corner and swung a teasing ball into the box for Patterson to nod home.

Despite some stout Irish defending, the USA doubled their lead when Coffey cut through the defence and produced a composed finish.
There was no reprieve in the second period as the USA continued to press for goals and they were rewarded just seven minutes in when Lavelle finished off a crisp move.
Number four came in the 63rd minute as Thompson managed to get past Jessie Stapleton and head for goal before curling home a fine shot to wrap up a comfortable win.
While the woodwork denied Olivia Moultrie late on, the USA laid down a marker before they play again in Cincinnati on Sunday (20:00 BST).

Ex-Salesian standout Deommodore Lenoir, now with 49ers, arrested for resisting peace officer

San Francisco 49ers defensive back Deommodore Lenoir was arrested Thursday afternoon in South Los Angeles. He was charged with delaying and resisting a peace officer, a misdemeanor. Another man, apparently a companion of Lenoir's, was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle, which is a felony. Advertisement According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the 4500 block of South Wilton Place. Officers spotted 25-year-old Marcus Cunningham "frantically reaching" into a gray Cadillac Escalade. He then "locked the vehicle and walked away, appearing to conceal contraband." Read more: Former NFL star Antonio Brown wanted on attempted murder charge, arrest warrant states Cunningham threw the keys behind a gate when approached by officers, the LAPD told The Times via email, then "Lenoir retrieved the keys, refused to give them back, and passed them to an unknown male who fled." After additional officers located the keys on a nearby porch, the police opened the car and found "a loaded semi-automatic firearm in the center compartment, a loaded Glock in an open compartment and narcotics," the LAPD said. Advertisement According to the L.A. County Sheriff Department's inmate information center, Lenoir was released on his own recognizance at 1:18 a.m. Friday and is due to appear in L.A. Superior Court on July 25. No release or court information was available for Cunningham. The 49ers released a statement Friday saying that they're aware of the matter and "are in the process of gathering further information." Lenoir, a former standout at Los Angeles Salesian High who played four seasons at Oregon, was selected by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2021 draft. He signed a five-year, $88-million contract extension before the 2024 season. Anaheim Ducks 2025 NHL Draft Live Blog

The Anaheim Ducks own the tenth overall selection on night one of the 2025 NHL Draft. The New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens made noise hours before the draft when the Islanders sent defenseman Noah Dobson to the Habs in exchange for the 16th and 17th overall picks as well as forward Emil Heineman. Advertisement The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Gavin Brindley, a 2025 third round pick, and a 2027 conditional second round pick. There's a fair amount of uncertainty following the Islanders first overall selection, with rumors and speculation running rampant. 1st Overall: New York Islanders Matthew Schaefer-Erie Otters (OHL) No surprise here. Schaefer is the surest bet in the draft to become a number one NHL defenseman. He possesses every tool teams are looking for in a cornerstone blueliner: tremendous skater, offensive instincts through the roof, and his defensive fundamentals are well beyond his years, despite missing the second half of the season with a broken clavicle. 2nd Overall: San Jose Sharks Michael Misa-Saginaw Spirit (OHL) After some speculation heading into tonight whether they were going to stick with the consensus and take Michael Misa or go against the grain and take Anton Frondell, the Sharks select Misa with the second overall pick. Misa produced an astounding 134 points (62-72=134) in 62 regular season games. He's got every tool in the toolbox necessary to become a number one center and the puck is drawn to his stick like a magnet. He's a playmaker, he's a scorer, he's a puck hound. A one-two punch of Celebrini-Misa will likely give the Ducks fits for over a decade. 3rd Overall: Chicago Blackhawks Anton Frondell-Djurgårdens IF (SHL) Frondell gives the Blackhawks their own thunder and lightning one-two punch between him and Connor Bedard down the middle. Frondell is a detailed 200-foot forward who thrives in the hard areas of the ice and has the best release in the draft. The Ducks are going to have to deal with some deep and talented center cores in the Western Conference when it's time to contend. 4th Overall: Utah Mammoth Caleb Desnoyers-Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL) Desnoyers is the center Utah needed behind Logan Cooley in the top six. He's another 200-foot, detailed, and creative center who can thrive next to newly acquired JJ Peterka. Utah is rumored to be one of the big noise-making teams this summer and they're already off to a great start. Desnoyers thrives in open ice and in small areas. He'll kill penalties and produce on the power play. 5th Overall: Nashville Predators Brady Martin-Soo Greyhounds (OHL) After a surprisingly poor season, the Preds earned a top five selection in this year's draft and took blue collar center Brady Martin. Martin was the Draft's biggest riser after his season finished and through the combine. Nashville has needed a number one center since their inception. I'm not so sure that center is Martin, but he'll win that fanbase over with his effort shift in and shift out. He's one of the most difficult players to play against in the draft and has a nose for the net. 6th Overall: Philadelphia Flyers Porter Martone-Brampton Steelheads (OHL) Days after acquiring Trevor Zegras from the Ducks, the Flyers select Martone as a potential glove-like fit on Zegras' wing. Martone has terrific vision from all areas of the ice. He thrives on the cycle as well as the rush and he is disruptive defensively. He's a big, skilled wing and could be the team's future captain. There's an argument he's the most NHL-ready prospect in this draft, so it will be interesting to see how Philly handles his development. 7th Overall: Boston Bruins James Hagens-Boston College (NCAA) Like Nashville, Boston had a surprisingly poor season and earned the seventh overall pick. They selected James Hagens, who I consider a steal at seven. Hagens is the center Boston craves. He's incredibly polished, a terrific skater, and has fantastic vision. The Bruins could be looking to retool or build up their pipeline or both. Whichever way they go, Hagens will be a perfect fit there. Why DiJonai Carrington was ruled out for Wings-Mystics game

The post Why DiJonai Carrington was ruled out for Wings-Mystics game appeared first on ClutchPoints. Dallas Wings forward DiJonai Carrington has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Washington Mystics, the team announced before tip-off. Carrington was initially listed as probable due to a rib injury. On Sunday morning, though, the Wings officially downgraded her status to out. Advertisement The probable-to-out downgrade is fairly surprising. Her probable status suggested she would likely play, but that clearly is not the case now. Nevertheless, the Wings, who have won back-to-back games, will attempt to earn a third consecutive victory on Sunday without Carrington on the floor. Carrington, a 27-year-old forward, earned the WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year Award for the 2024 season. So far in 2025, Carrington, who is in her first season with Dallas, is averaging 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per outing. She is shooting just 35.6 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from beyond the arc, however. The veteran forward was consistently in the starting lineup to begin the season. Aziaha James has started in her place in the last two games, though. Carrington has still impacted the Wings off the bench, but it remains to be seen what her role will be once she returns from her current injury. James will likely start once again on Sunday. Wings look to defeat Mystics despite DiJonai Carrington's injury absence The Mystics will enter Sunday's contest with a 5-8 record. Washington is in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Meanwhile, Dallas holds a 3-11 record. Although the Wings are in last place in the Western Conference, they have built some positive momentum in recent action. Advertisement Earning a win on Sunday afternoon will prove to be a challenge without DiJonai Carrington. The Wings will try to take care of business despite her injury absence against the Mystics. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 PM EST in Washington for what should be a competitive affair.
