Sabah PKR welcomes action on mining scandal

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah PKR has welcomed a statement by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Tan Sri Azam Baki that charges will be laid against those involved in an alleged mining scandal in the State. Sabah PKR Chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said mining licensing has long been a matter of concern for Sabahans, who hope that the State's natural resources are managed fairly and used to benefit all.
Advertisement In a statement, Mustapha said transparency, integrity and accountability must be the foundation of every decision involving the State's resources. 'Sabah PKR believes that these (charges) will send an important message that the culture of abuse of power will no longer be tolerated. 'It is time for Sabah to strengthen its standards of governance with greater credibility and integrity,' he said. On Friday, Azam said he would make an announcement soon about the 'one or two individuals' to be charged in court in connection with the alleged mining scandal. PBM to go it alone in Sabah polls, says party's sec-gen
SANDAKAN: Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), a party widely perceived as Sarawak-based, is reaffirming its intention to contest solo in the upcoming Sabah state election — maintaining that no political cooperation is being pursued at this stage. PBM secretary-general Munan Laja said the party is open to possibilities in the future, but for now will rely on its own grassroots machinery and local leaders to contest selected seats. 'So, we go solo. Not unless one day there is another picture coming. At the moment, we will go solo,' he told reporters after officiating the party's Jelajah PBM Sabah programme in Sandakan, on Sunday (June 15). Held at Hotel Gloria in Bandar Letat, the event also marked the launch of the Tanjung Papat PBM division, which has attracted over 1,300 members in just one month. Munan said the rapid growth in membership shows that Sabahans are responding positively to PBM's message, which centres on clean, community-based leadership. 'PBM is a new party with no excess baggage. The candidates are local people, fresh faces,' he said, adding that the party is still assessing suitable candidates from among its divisions. The party currently has seven active divisions in Sabah and intends to field candidates in those areas based on readiness and local support. Sabah PBM chairman Jupperi Lenson, meanwhile, denied claims that PBM is attempting to impose Sarawak-based leadership on Sabah, saying the party's multiracial and inclusive character makes it relevant nationwide. 'PBM is a national party... so the issue of whether we are a local or external party should not arise. What matters is the quality of leadership and an inclusive agenda,' he said. Jupperi said PBM had been preparing for the state election since 2022 and is now active in seven areas, including Tanjung Papat, Bandau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Tulid, and Kundasang. He also said PBM is adapting the inclusive model it applied in Sarawak for Sabah's unique political landscape. 'There should be no issue about where a party originated from. What matters is its service to the people and its relevance. PBM is here to offer something different,' he said. Munan also reiterated that PBM will keep its options open if political dynamics shift before polling day.

PLKN 3.0 absentees under scrutiny, may face legal action

Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said a report on this matter will be presented to the ministry soon for further action, as attendance for selected individuals in the second series is mandatory. Advertisement "Yes, there are indeed several (individuals) who did not show up, and at present, we are receiving and reviewing all the reports in detail regarding their reasons for absence. "JLKN will present the findings to the Ministry of Defence soon. Essentially, this process is to raise awareness that once selected, it is mandatory for them to register, and we have provisions under the law to act on this," he told a press conference after officiating the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) award ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh here today. He said a review of the reasons is currently underway, as trainees' attendance is governed by Section 18(1) of the National Service Training Act 2003 (Act 628) and that selected individuals who failed to attend without a valid excuse may face legal consequences, including a fine of up to RM3,000, imprisonment for a maximum of six months, or both. It was previously reported that 344 PLKN 3.0, Series 2/2025 trainees had reported for 45 days of training between May 11 and June 24. Out of this number, 206 male trainees and 138 female trainees reported at Rejimen 505 (AW) Camp, Force 136 Camp in Pekan, Pahang, and Rejimen 515 (AW) Camp, Jalan Buku Lima, Kuala Lumpur. "So far, the main reasons for trainee absences that we have received are related to health, employment, and furthering studies. We are trying to improve related aspects to ensure 100 per cent attendance for every session of the programme," he said. At the ceremony earlier, 1,000 veterans from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), along with widows and heirs of veterans from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, were presented with the PJM. The award honours the bravery and sacrifice of military personnel in fulfilling their duties to the nation. As of March, 48,346 MAF veterans who met the requirements have received the PJM. No need to dissolve Economy Ministry: PM

Anwar explained that the Economy Ministry, which was formerly the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) under the Prime Minister's Department, was elevated to a full ministry during Pakatan Harapan's first administration. The structure is determined by the Cabinet and me, so for now, I don't see any need for a reshuffle,' he told reporters after officiating at Energy Asia 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. On the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), scheduled to be tabled in Parliament this July, Anwar said it is a collective responsibility of the Cabinet, with the Economy Ministry serving as the main secretariat. He added that various adjustments and reforms are underway in light of the changing economic landscape, including tariff revisions that are impacting key national projections. 'Last week, we also held a meeting to hear input from ministries on policy adjustments being introduced,' he said. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli tendered his resignation and went on leave, which ends today. On the resignation of Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Anwar said the matter has not been finalised as he wishes to allow time and space before making a decision. 'I usually wait, give them a chance. Reflect, consider, and I will give my view. If possible, I'd like him to continue his service; there's still time before his resignation takes effect,' he said. Nik Nazmi also tendered his resignation on May 28 and has gone on leave until July 3. When asked about the proposed adjustments involving RON95 petrol prices, Anwar reiterated that it will not affect 85 to 90 per cent of the population. He said the opposition's claims that people are suffering due to the subsidy rationalisation policy are nothing more than desperate political gimmicks aimed at creating a negative image of the government. Anwar said the government's move towards subsidy rationalisation is a critical step to ensure sufficient national resources are channelled effectively to benefit the lower-income group. "We want to have enough resources to help the poor, to enhance the quality of education and to provide better public services, including in healthcare," he said.
