PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli took to Facebook on Wednesday (May 21) to release a list of candidates aligned with his campaign in Friday's (May 23) PKR central leadership polls.
Rafizi's campaign goes by the acronym Hiruk, which stands for Hidupkan Idealisme Reformasi Dalam Ujian Kuasa (Reviving Reform Idealism in a Test of Power).
In his Facebook post, Rafizi listed three vice-presidents who are defending their posts, including Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harum, Chang Lih Kang (Science, Technology and Innovation Minister) and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister) as well as Manivanan Gowin, who is contesting the fourth elected vice-president post.
Other on the list include Subang MP Wong Chen, Deputy Energy Transition and Public Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung and Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail, who is vying for the PKR Wanita chief's post with incumbent Fadhlina Sidek (who is also Education Minister).
"Our challenge today is to choose a leader who is able to stick to the ideals of reform, even when tested by power," Rafizi said in his post.
He also added that over the past few weeks, he had received a variety of insights and messages from PKR grassroots members who want a strong leadership line-up with a reformative spirit and not just in pursuit of power or position.

Anwar: Malaysia reaffirms unwavering support for Palestine, aligns with Türkiye on Gaza

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and stands firmly alongside Türkiye in defending the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, following a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said he shared his counterpart's stance that they could not afford to remain passive in the face of the suffering in Gaza. "I also expressed my appreciation to him for his unwavering and consistent stance in championing the voice of the oppressed Palestinian people. "Malaysia fully welcomes and supports President Erdoğan's commitment to using all available platforms and means to defend the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people," he said in a Facebook post. Anwar said the phone conversation also touched on Erdoğan's recent official visit to Malaysia, which left a lasting impression and further strengthened the foundation of the longstanding bilateral ties between the two countries. "It was one of the most successful and meaningful visits in the country's diplomatic history – not merely a ceremonial exchange, but one enriched with substantive discussions addressing shared interests. "I view the visit as a reflection of the strong alignment in values and direction between our two nations in upholding justice, sovereignty, and the advancement of the global ummah," he said. Anwar added that Malaysia remained committed to working closely with Türkiye, particularly in forging a strategic alliance that could amplify the voice of the ummah on the global stage. "In the spirit of Aidiladha, sacrifice, steadfastness, and faith in the call of the Almighty, Malaysia will continue to stand with Türkiye in the pursuit of a more peaceful, just, and humane world," he said.

Paetongtarn: Thailand rejects ICJ authority, urges issue containment

BANGKOK: Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra reaffirmed Thailand's rejection of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) authority, stressing the need for bilateral mechanisms with Cambodia. According to her Facebook post on Thursday (June 5), Paetongtarn stated that in response to the Cambodian government's statement on the Thai-Cambodian border situation, she had consulted with the Foreign Minister and the Foreign Ministry's Permanent Secretary. Additionally, she discussed the issue with Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who called to report on his visit to Ubon Ratchathani province to closely monitor the situation and evaluate the overall picture. - Photo: The Nation/ANN 'The Thai government reaffirms its commitment to resolving issues through peaceful means, with mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,' she said. Paetongtarn stated that regarding Cambodia's intention to involve the ICJ, the Thai government asserts that Thailand has not recognised the court's jurisdiction in disputes since 1960. She emphasised that the issue should be resolved strictly within the affected area, without widening the scope of the matter. "Thailand remains committed to the bilateral consultation mechanisms agreed upon by both parties to preserve the good relations between the peoples of the two nations," she said. - The Nation/ANN

Zairil withdraws defamation suit after activists retract unfounded allegations

GEORGE TOWN: State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari today withdrew his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution, following their retraction of allegedly defamatory remarks made during the 2023 Penang State Election. Zairil confirmed the withdrawal at the Penang Sessions Court, stating that all parties acknowledged the allegations were unfounded. 'The case has reached its conclusion at the Penang Sessions Court today. Both defendants have retracted their statements and expressed sincere regret over the matter. 'As a result, I have agreed to withdraw my suit against them. May this serve as a lesson to always verify your facts before making unfounded allegations and irresponsible claims,' Zairil said in a statement posted on Facebook. In a joint statement, Ravinder and Khoo acknowledged that their allegations were unfounded and expressed regret for any embarrassment, inconvenience, or reputational harm caused to Zairil as a result of their statements and any ensuing misunderstandings. 'The parties are unanimously of the opinion that bringing the matter to a close is in the best interest of all concerned. Khoo and Ravinder have removed the recording from their respective social media accounts and further undertake not to republish the same,' the statement read. According to the statement, on Aug 5, 2023, a recording was uploaded by Khoo on her X account, depicting an interaction between herself and Ravinder during a civil protest against the Penang South Reclamation project. The same recording was subsequently shared on Ravinder's Facebook page on Aug 22, 2023. The recording referenced Zairil's role as a member of the Penang government and alleged that a familial connection influenced the appointment of the project delivery partner for the reclamation project.
