‘Dark Shadows' Debuted in 1966: A TV Flashback

Dark Shadows took a 'bite," so to speak, out of the network daytime drama landscape. And it was the beginning of a franchise that has returned numerous times in subsequent decades.
Flashback to June 27, 1966, and Dark Shadows began its five-season run on ABC. At first thought, Jonathan Frid as the vampire Barnabas Collins comes to mind. But Frid's iconic role was not introduced until 10 months into the run of Dark Shadows. From the onset, the show depicted the lives, loves, trials, and tribulations of the wealthy Collins family of Collinsport, Maine, where a number of supernatural occurrences take place.
Residents at the Collinswood Mansion included brother and sister Roger Collins (Louis Edmonds) and Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Joan Bennett), their children, and the governess Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke). Actors who rose to fame in primetime in later years who got their starts on Dark Shadows included David Selby (Falcon Crest), John Karlen (Cagney & Lacey), Kate Jackson (The Rookies, Charlie's Angels, Scarecrow and Mrs. King), Conrad Bain (Maude, Diff'rent Strokes) and Abe Vigoda (Barney Miller, Fish).

At the time, the daytime drama landscape consisted of the more traditional entries like ABC's General Hospital, The Young Marrieds and The Nurses; CBS' Search for Tomorrow, The Guiding Life, As the World Turns, One Life to Live, The Edge of Night and The Secret Storm; and NBC's Days of Our Lives, Moment of Truth and The Doctors. Needless to say, this soap opera category was considerably more visible than it is today (only four shows are on the broadcast networks at present). And the arrival of Dark Shadows 59 years ago added a new twist to the then standard storytelling.
Blending soap opera and horror, Dark Shadows had a darker tone, distinguished by its supernatural elements and gothic horror themes. Unlike the other daytime dramas, Dark Shadows featured vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and other creatures. And, unlike the typical adult female audience skew, the end result was an attraction for a large teenage audience and a cult following.

An immediate success, the original Dark Shadows was a victim, perhaps of the 'too much, too soon' syndrome. Unlike other daytime dramas that have lasted for decades (think General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful at present), series creator Dan Curtis felt the show had run out of fresh story ideas. And the show's ratings dropped significantly during its final two years. So, it was just five seasons on ABC. But there have been numerous attempts to capture the original magic.
The success of the original run of Dark Shadows spawned two initial feature films: House of Dark Shadows in 1970 and Night of Dark Shadows in 1971. In 1991 came a 12-episode primetime reboot with Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins. There was a pilot produced in 2004 for a new series on former network The WB (with Alec Newman as Barnabas), but it was not picked up to series. And in 2012 came Tim Burton's film reboot of Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Jonathan Frid, who died shortly before the movie opened in theaters, made a cameo appearance.

Chances are we will see other attempts to reboot Dark Shadows in the future. And today we celebrate 59 years since debuting on ABC.

It can stand on its own four corners or be the base of any number of delicious creations. Of course, toast without a spread, while still incredibly good, just isn't as exciting. Not that toast is bad but any stretch of the imagination, but sometimes things need a little extra encouragement. Maybe spreads actually make the world go round instead. Yeah, that sounds more accurate. Regardless, we love toast and spreads equally, but love when the two come together just a teensy bit for those of us with a sweet tooth, Target has plenty of delectable sweet spreads that taste great on their own, on top of toast, or as a dip for fruit, and @targettrendsetter is sharing all the deets. Charlize Theron Puts Her Underwear and Bra on Full Display in a Sheer Fishnet Bodysuit

Charlize Theron wore a sheer fishnet bodysuit to the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie, The Old Guard 2. Theron stars in the film alongside Kiki Layne, Uma Thurman, and Veronica Ngô. She wore a similarly sheer look while promoting the Netflix thriller on Jimmy Kimmel Theron is continuing her streak of nearly naked dressing with another sheer look, this time courtesy of the French fashion house Givenchy. Stepping out at the Los Angeles premiere of The Old Guard 2, the actress sported a full-body fishnet look over a simple black bra and matching black undies. The ensemble was stamped with the Givenchy logo and finished off with a simple black blazer and black boots. Theron stars in The Old Guard 2 alongside Kiki Layne, Uma Thurman, and Veronica Ngô. The thriller is a sequel to the 2020 movie of the same name, and centers on a group of mercenaries with special healing abilities that render them essentially (though not completely) immortal. The group is tasked with "protecting the world," according to Netflix. At the premiere, the actress revealed that she was particularly excited about Thurman joining the cast of the sequel; in particular, she called a scene in which the two actors dual it out "everything that we hoped for." "It's what we got excited about in the pre-production," she told People. "We're so grateful that she said yes. And I look at the movie now and I still pinch myself. I still can't believe she said yes." As for Theron's daring fishnet onesie? It comes on the heels of last month's similarly sheer look, which she wore while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote Netflix's The Old Guard 2, not to mention a slew of other stars who have experimented with see-through fashion, like Emma Stone, Heidi Klum, and Halle Berry. Whoopi Goldberg Issues Bold Statement Against Critics ‘Who Don't Know Me'

Whoopi Goldberg Issues Bold Statement Against Critics 'Who Don't Know Me' originally appeared on Parade. It seems like took the schoolyard adage of 'sticks and stones' to heart, because she's letting her haters know that their words can never hurt her. The EGOT winner issued a bold statement on the June 4 episode of The View after the panelists touched on the topic of not being able to please everybody. Related: It all started when they spoke about Jimmy Fallon's recent admission that he struggles with knowing that 'not everyone is rooting for you and some people want you to fail.' The group then pivoted towards online commenters who take to the internet to criticize the show's panelists, with asking Goldberg if she cares about the opinions of strangers. 'No. No, I don't,' Goldberg shared as the audience clapped. Related: 'Because nobody can make me feel worse about myself than I can do to me. So I don't need you, who don't know me, talking any crap to me, because you don't know anything,' Goldberg continued. 'So why am I taking time to be hurt by something you say, when either you don't listen, or you are choosing to take this the way you want to take it?' The Ghost star then concluded, saying, 'None of us start out to step in poop. But, we are in poop constantly, because people decide that you've said something that you didn't say.'
