‘Like tracksuit pants': The jeans Bella Heathcote can't live without
What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? Levi's jeans, a white Bonds tee and a big cotton or linen men's shirt. I also like a Hawaiian shirt for summer. Any go-to jewellery? I wear my mum's jewellery: an emerald ring that my father gave her when I was born, some chunky gold hoops and a bangle with a triangle ruby inlay. Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? A fluoro pink-and-green striped top and skirt set that I would still wear now if it fit me. What was your first fashion moment? The Dark Shadows premiere in 2012 was pretty huge. I went from having my friend dress me and looking a bit of a mess on the red carpet to wearing Chanel. And your worst fashion mistake? About 10 years ago, I went to an event in LA wearing very heavy make-up, like I was in drag. And I paid someone to do it. As I was walking out the door, my partner said, 'You know you could wipe it off.' Not helpful. What's on your wish list? I'm looking for the perfect metallic bumbag. I've also got my eye on a Gucci backpack with a snake on it. Is there something you'd never wear? Really high heels. What shoes do you wear most often? I wear my Birkenstock 'Arizona' slides so much I've worn out the tread. Is there a current trend you like? I'm loving the '90s-style suits and blazers. What do you sleep in? Pyjamas from Suku or Deiji Studios. Loading Who's your favourite fashion icon? A friend told me I dress like [actor] Walton Goggins. I'll happily have him as my style icon. What do you wear on a typical working day? To the set, I'll wear men's Levi's – as they're basically tracksuit pants that I can easily rip off – with a button-down shirt – as you can get your make-up done without having to then pull it over your head – and my Dr Martens loafers. What's your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? A Hawaiian shirt and a pair of old jeans that I cut off at the knee – I'm appreciating the long denim short.

For Two Octogenarians, First Came Romance, Then a Dream Home
When Kathryn Leigh Scott met Patrick Ralph Oster for the first time for lunch in February 2019, she was immediately drawn in by his eyes. 'They're just alive and sparkly,' she said. 'I thought, oh, this will be fun.' Ms. Scott, 82, hadn't been romantically interested in anyone since her husband had died from degenerative nerve disease in 2011, but she agreed to meet Mr. Oster at her friend Linda Yellin's suggestion. On the surface, the purpose of the lunch at Mozzarella & Vino in Midtown Manhattan was for Mr. Oster and Ms. Scott to exchange notes on each other's manuscripts. At the time, Ms. Scott was writing her novel, 'September Girl,' and Mr. Oster was working on 'The Obituary Writer: A Murder Novel.' But Ms. Scott knew Ms. Yellin had ulterior motives. 'Linda is quite the matchmaker,' Ms. Scott said. Mr. Oster, 80, had also been reluctant to date after the death of his wife in 2017 from cancer; however, after some background research, he became intrigued by Ms. Scott, who has worked as an actress for more than 60 years, beginning with a role as Maggie Evans and Josette DuPres on the cult TV series, 'Dark Shadows,' which aired from 1966 to 1971. 'I wasn't crawling around the bars looking for love,' Mr. Oster said. 'But I saw what Kathryn's life story was and I thought, wait a minute, this could be more interesting than, 'What do you think of Chapter 1?'' Ms. Scott was born in Robbinsdale, Minn., and spent a few years after World War II living in Vikebukt, Norway, where her family was from. She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York in 1964 and worked as a bunny at the Playboy Club in New York City starting in 1963 at age 19, an experience she wrote about in her 1998 book, 'The Bunny Years,' for which she interviewed more than 200 other former Bunnies. She has acted in 'Star Trek,' 'Magnum P.I.,' 'Police Squad!' and 'Dynasty' and many other TV shows and films, and written several books. She currently stars on a fiction podcast called 'What Friends Do,' about members of the entertainment industry living in a retirement home. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

‘Dark Shadows' Debuted in 1966: A TV Flashback
Dark Shadows, poster, Jonathan Frid, 1966-. (Photo by LMPC via Getty Images) Dark Shadows took a 'bite," so to speak, out of the network daytime drama landscape. And it was the beginning of a franchise that has returned numerous times in subsequent decades. Flashback to June 27, 1966, and Dark Shadows began its five-season run on ABC. At first thought, Jonathan Frid as the vampire Barnabas Collins comes to mind. But Frid's iconic role was not introduced until 10 months into the run of Dark Shadows. From the onset, the show depicted the lives, loves, trials, and tribulations of the wealthy Collins family of Collinsport, Maine, where a number of supernatural occurrences take place. Residents at the Collinswood Mansion included brother and sister Roger Collins (Louis Edmonds) and Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Joan Bennett), their children, and the governess Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke). Actors who rose to fame in primetime in later years who got their starts on Dark Shadows included David Selby (Falcon Crest), John Karlen (Cagney & Lacey), Kate Jackson (The Rookies, Charlie's Angels, Scarecrow and Mrs. King), Conrad Bain (Maude, Diff'rent Strokes) and Abe Vigoda (Barney Miller, Fish). More (Photo by ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images) At the time, the daytime drama landscape consisted of the more traditional entries like ABC's General Hospital, The Young Marrieds and The Nurses; CBS' Search for Tomorrow, The Guiding Life, As the World Turns, One Life to Live, The Edge of Night and The Secret Storm; and NBC's Days of Our Lives, Moment of Truth and The Doctors. Needless to say, this soap opera category was considerably more visible than it is today (only four shows are on the broadcast networks at present). And the arrival of Dark Shadows 59 years ago added a new twist to the then standard storytelling. Blending soap opera and horror, Dark Shadows had a darker tone, distinguished by its supernatural elements and gothic horror themes. Unlike the other daytime dramas, Dark Shadows featured vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and other creatures. And, unlike the typical adult female audience skew, the end result was an attraction for a large teenage audience and a cult following. UNITED STATES - JUNE 27: DARK SHADOWS - 6/27/66, The story of Dark Shadows begins with newly hired ... More Alexandra Moltke (as governess Victoria Winters, left) arriving at Collinwood, the Collins' estate in Collinsport, Maine in search of her mysterious origins. Louis Edmonds (as Brutus Collins) also stars., (Photo by ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images) An immediate success, the original Dark Shadows was a victim, perhaps of the 'too much, too soon' syndrome. Unlike other daytime dramas that have lasted for decades (think General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful at present), series creator Dan Curtis felt the show had run out of fresh story ideas. And the show's ratings dropped significantly during its final two years. So, it was just five seasons on ABC. But there have been numerous attempts to capture the original magic. The success of the original run of Dark Shadows spawned two initial feature films: House of Dark Shadows in 1970 and Night of Dark Shadows in 1971. In 1991 came a 12-episode primetime reboot with Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins. There was a pilot produced in 2004 for a new series on former network The WB (with Alec Newman as Barnabas), but it was not picked up to series. And in 2012 came Tim Burton's film reboot of Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Jonathan Frid, who died shortly before the movie opened in theaters, made a cameo appearance.
