CONMEBOL imposes closed-door matches on Colo Colo after deadly Copa Libertadores incident
ASUNCION, April 30 (Reuters) - Chile's Colo Colo will have to play five home games behind closed doors and five away matches without visiting fans, CONMEBOL said on Wednesday, after two fans were killed earlier this month in a crush during a Copa Libertadores match.
The incident occurred on April 10, when home fans attempted to force their way into the Monumental Stadium in Santiago ahead of Colo Colo's Group E match against Brazilian side Fortaleza.
The match was abandoned after 70 minutes following a stampede where a 13-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman were crushed to death by a collapsing fence.
The disciplinary unit of the South American soccer's governing body had provisionally banned fans from attending Colo Colo matches while it deliberated on the final sanctions.
The Santiago-based team have also been fined $80,000, and CONMEBOL awarded a 3–0 victory to Fortaleza for the suspended second matchday fixture of the group stage of South America's top club tournament.
The result leaves them bottom of the group on two points, two behind third-placed Fortaleza. Colombia's Atletico Bucaramanga are leaders with five points, one ahead of Argentine side Racing Club.

Arsenal finally seal permanent transfer for signing dubbed 'a scandal'
Arsenal have sanctioned the departure Marquinhos, who will join Brazilian side Cruzeiro, three years after his transfer was ridiculed by those back in South America Arsenal have offloaded Marquinhos with the forward going back to Brazil - three years after his signing was labelled a "scandal" by those back in South America. The 22-year-old joined from Sao Paulo and is now heading back to the Brazilian Serie A with Cruzeiro in a £2.5m move. His appearances were few and far between and he ended up playing just six times in all competitions, scoring the once. Marquinhos spent much of his time out on loan with spells at Norwich City, Nantes, Fluminense and Cruzeiro during his time on Arsenal's books and has now made his move to Brazil a permanent one after failing to make the grade at the Emirates. An Arsenal statement said: "Marquinhos has moved to Brazilian Serie A side Cruzeiro in a permanent transfer." It added: "Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Marquinhos for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future." He cost Arsenal just €3million in compensation fees when he originally moved as the Premier League side took advantage of his deal expiring that summer. Marquinhos came through the youth system at Sao Paulo and was tipped to have a major impact with several of the country's pundit identifying him as a talent in his teenage years. They were therefore left stunned that his contract was allowed to wind down, which meant he was able to leave for such a minor fee. World Cup winner Vampeta was among those and claimed it was "absurd". He said: "Marquinhos' business. They're going to lose Marquinhos to Arsenal for €3m. I don't know if you remember that I used to say I watched Audax's academy games, Marquinhos in the under-15… he used to already make the difference. I said here on the show, 'There's an U-15 at Sao Paulo, Marquinhos'… Now he's going to leave on a silver platter." TV Host Thiago Asmar claimed that Marquinhos should be worth at least €10-15m as he said it was a "scandal" for him to be allowed to depart for such a minimal amount. Former Arsenal chief Edu claimed that Marquinhos was "a player for the future" but Mikel Arteta was never able to unlock his potential. The Brazilian had a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order and opportunities ultimately never came his way. The Gunners are looking to further bolster their frontline this summer with wide forwards on their shortlist. They've been linked with the likes if Nico Williams, who has become a leading light at Athletic Bilbao and could be tempted by a move to the Premier League.

Colombian presidential hopeful in critical condition after assassination attempt
In a statement, doctors said the 39-year-old senator had 'barely' responded to medical interventions, which included brain surgery, following the assassination attempt that has had a chilling effect on the South American nation. Mr Uribe was shot on Saturday as he addressed a small crowd of people who had gathered in a park in Bogota's Modelia neighbourhood. Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital where Mr Uribe is being treated on Sunday to pray for his recovery. Some carried rosaries in their hands, while others chanted slogans against President Gustavo Petro. 'This is terrible,' said Walter Jimenez, a lawyer who showed up outside the hospital, with a sign calling for Mr Petro's removal. 'It feels like we are going back to the 1990s,' he said, referring to a decade during which drug cartels and rebel groups murdered judges, presidential candidates and journalists with impunity. Mr Petro has condemned the attack and urged his opponents not to use it for political ends. But some Colombians have also asked the president to tone down his rhetoric against opposition leaders. The assassination attempt has stunned the nation, with many politicians describing it as the latest sign of how security has deteriorated in Colombia, where the government is struggling to control violence in rural and urban areas, despite a 2016 peace deal with the nation's largest rebel group. The attack on Mr Uribe comes amid growing animosity between Mr Petro and the senate over blocked reforms to the nation's labour laws. Mr Petro has organised protests in favour of the reforms, where he has delivered fiery speeches referring to opposition leaders as 'oligarchs' and 'enemies of the people'. 'There is no way to argue that the president… who describes his opponents as enemies of the people, paramilitaries and assassins has no responsibility in this,' Andres Mejia, a prominent political analyst, wrote on X. The attorney general's office said a 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene of the attack against Mr Uribe. Videos captured on social media show a suspect shooting at Mr Uribe from close range. The suspect was injured in the leg and was recovering at another clinic, authorities said. Defence minister Pedro Sanchez added that over 100 officers are investigating the attack. On Monday, Colombia's attorney general Luz Adriana Camargo said that minors in Colombia face sentences of up to eight years in detention for committing murders. Ms Camargo acknowledged that lenient sentences have encouraged armed groups to recruit minors to commit crimes. However, she said that Colombian law also considers that minors who are recruited by armed groups are victims, and is trying to protect them. 'As a society we need to reflect on why a minor is getting caught up in a network of assassins, and what we can do to stop this from happening in the future,' she said.

Hitman who shot beauty queen dead had grim tattoo of her burned face on his arm
The killer is alleged to have shot Bruna Zucco Segatin alongside her 30-year-old boyfriend Valdir de Brito Feitosa in 2018 and went on to tattoo her face onto his arm A hitman who shot dead a beauty queen was arrested by police after they identified him via a gruesome tattoo of her burned face on his arm. The killer, not named by local media in Altonia, in the state of Parana, Brazil, was seized on June 7 after seven years on the run. Victim Bruna Zucco Segatin, 21, was found shot dead alongside her 30-year-old boyfriend Valdir de Brito Feitosa in the back of a burned out pick-up truck in 2018. Bruna's face had been hideously disfigured by the flames. But police believe that Feitosa was the main target and the former Miss Altonia just happened to be with him. Officers say they seized the gunman after linking the killings to local drugs and contraband trafficking rivals. Police photos show the suspected killer had inked a grim souvenir of Bruna's execution with a new tattoo of a woman's head engulfed in flames on his left hand. Police chief Reginaldo Caetano said: "The tattoo on the suspect depicts a woman with part of her face on fire. Bruna's body was located burned and charred in the back of a pick-up truck." The 39-year-old trafficking boss, named only as A.D.S., said to have ordered the execution was arrested earlier this month with two other suspects. Their identities have not been released by Brazilian law enforcement. According to local reports, police used explosives in order to enter the location where the main suspect was holed up. A recent report by UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime found some 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed by men in 2023. It was estimated that 60 per cent of these deaths were committed by someone close to the victim. Earlier this year two sisters were shot dead on a beach in front of their horrified friends as attackers fled the scene. Maria Beatriz dos Santos, 20, and Bianca dos Santos, 15, had been with their friends in Brazil on May 1. They were standing by the edge of the beach when a group of men stormed the area and gunned down the pair. The gang members then fled the scene on jet skis, according to reports. Maria died at the beach while Bianca was raced to a nearby hospital. Despite the medics' best efforts, she died from her injuries. Police started investigating the shooting and determined it was carried out by members of the Red Command, a Brazilian criminal organisation. It remains unclear what the motive was behind the shooting.
