S&P upgrades India's rating after 19 years to ‘BBB' on robust economic growth, better finances

The Print3 days ago
The impact of US tariffs on the Indian economy will be 'manageable', S&P said, adding that a 50 per cent tariff on US exports (if imposed) will not pose a 'material drag' on growth.
'India remains among the best performing economies in the world…The quality of government spending has improved in the past five to six years,' S&P Global Ratings said.
New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) S&P on Thursday upgraded India's sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' with a stable outlook after a gap of nearly 19 years, citing robust economic growth, political commitment for fiscal consolidation and 'conducive' monetary policy to check inflation.
'India is relatively less reliant on trade and about 60% of its economic growth stems from domestic consumption,' it said.
The rating upgrade by a US-based agency comes days after American President Donald Trump dubbed India as a 'dead economy'. Trump has imposed the highest 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods with effect from August 27.
Also, the rating upgrade will help lower borrowing cost of Indian companies in international markets.
S&P in January 2007 placed India on the lowest investment grade rating of 'BBB-'.
This is the first upgrade by a global rating agency which has rated India a notch above the lowest investment grade.
'BBB' is an investment grade rating and denotes improved ability of the country to discharge its debt obligation comfortably.
In May last year, S&P changed India's credit rating outlook to 'positive', from 'stable', and hinted that a rating upgrade could be coming in the next 24 months.
'The upgrade of India reflects its buoyant economic growth, against the backdrop of an enhanced monetary policy environment that anchors inflationary expectations. Together with the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation and efforts to improve spending quality, we believe these factors have coalesced to benefit credit metrics,' S&P said while upgrading India's rating.
S&P Global Ratings raised its long-term unsolicited sovereign credit ratings on India to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', and its short-term ratings to 'A-2' from 'A-3'.
The stable outlook reflects S&P's view that continued policy stability and high infrastructure investment will support India's long-term growth prospects. That along with cautious fiscal and monetary policy that moderates the government's elevated debt and interest burden will underpin the rating over the next 24 months.
India's weak fiscal settings had always been the most vulnerable part of its sovereign ratings profile.
'With economic recovery now well on track, the government can depict a more concrete (albeit gradual) path to fiscal consolidation,' S&P said.
S&P projects general government deficit of 7.3 per cent of GDP in fiscal 2026 to decline to 6.6 per cent by fiscal 2029.
'India's recovery from its pandemic nadir places it among the best-performing emerging market economies in the world. Economic expansion is normalising toward a more sustainable level with good momentum. We anticipate solid consumer and public investment dynamics to propel real GDP growth to 6.5 per cent in fiscal 2026 and to average 6.8 per cent over the next three years,' S&P said. CM Adityanath inaugurates Torrent Group's green hydrogen plant in UP

Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group's green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh was on Sunday inaugurated by state chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The project, jointly developed by Torrent Group entities Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, will have an annual production capacity of 72,000 tonnes per annum, the group said in a statement. "The Green Hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas in Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, maintaining its concentration up to 2 per cent," it said. The green hydrogen blended with natural gas will be further supplied to domestic households, CNG stations and industries in the region through the already laid network of natural gas pipelines. "Torrent's green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur is the first Green Hydrogen plant in Uttar Pradesh and is also the largest Green Hydrogen and Natural Gas blending project in the City Gas Distribution sector in the country," the statement said. Torrent Gas has licence to provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar and Kushinagar districts. Torrent has already set up 32 CNG stations and supplies gas to 12,000+ domestic households and 73 industries and commercial establishments in the region and intends to grow its gas distribution infrastructure in the region significantly. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced via electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources like solar, wind or hydropower. Unlike hydrogen made from fossil fuels, green hydrogen has no direct carbon emissions, making it a cleaner energy carrier. Blending it with natural gas reduces carbon footprint, utilises the already laid natural gas infrastructure and helps to ramp up early demand for hydrogen. Speaking on the occasion, Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh has a target of 1 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production, for which it has set up a specific policy that will support potential investments. With the inauguration of this plant, green hydrogen has become a part of the life of common people as it will directly reach their kitchens and vehicles. the statement quoted him as saying. He also mentioned that availability of PNG has brought great relief to the people of Gorakhpur, especially the housewives due to the convenience, safety and savings it offers. Increasing use of CNG as transportation fuel has helped battle pollution and save costs for the masses. Various industries and commercial establishments in Gorakhpur are also now using piped natural gas and reaping the benefits of cheaper and economical fuel. Jinal Mehta, Director, Torrent Group, said, "Torrent Group is committed to making a significant contribution in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India's Energy Transition and National Green Hydrogen Mission. The commissioning of Torrent Power's Green Hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur and its integration into Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, is a milestone in this endeavour. It marks the culmination of the first initiative in our long-term vision of setting up large scale green hydrogen plants in the country for various use cases including for blending with natural gas in the CGD network." Blending Green Hydrogen into Gorakhpur's gas grid is a step in achieving practical, scalable pathway to net-zero target of the country. It lowers emissions, builds demand for green molecules, and creates a platform for deeper de-carbonisation in transport and industry, he said.

US tariffs impact on jobs: Nearly 3 lakh workers at risk in textiles and gems; Here's what experts say

The steep tariffs imposed on Indian exports to the US have triggered sharp debate among staffing specialists, with some flagging the risk of immediate job losses and others suggesting that India's domestic demand and trade diversification could soften the blow. 'The recent imposition of additional US tariffs is expected to have a direct and substantial impact on India's employment landscape. This will especially impact those industries relying heavily on the US market for business continuity and growth,' Genius HRTech founder, chairman and managing director R P Yadav told PTI. Yadav identified textiles, auto components, agriculture, and gems and jewellery as the most vulnerable sectors, warning that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will absorb the heaviest shock. He estimated that 2,00,000 to 3,00,000 jobs are at immediate risk, with textiles alone—being labour-intensive—potentially losing as many as 1,00,000 positions if the tariff regime remains in force for over six months. He further cautioned that gems and jewellery hubs in Surat and SEEPZ, Mumbai, could also face widespread job losses due to shrinking demand and rising costs in the US market. However, not all experts foresee an employment crisis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo TeamLease Services Senior Vice President Balasubramanian Anantha Narayanan argued that India's reliance on domestic consumption makes its job market less vulnerable than China's. 'At this point in time, we aren't seeing any signs of a slowdown or loss of jobs. This also by extension means that our jobs are largely in service of domestic demand too, with the exception of some sectors like ITeS among others. Our exports to the USA are USD 87 billion, which is roughly about 2.2 per cent of our overall GDP. Largely pharma, electronics etc. won't be affected for now, which will further limit the export exposure to industries such as textiles, gems and jewellery among others,' he said, quoted PTI. He also noted that the tariffs are yet to take effect, leaving space for possible negotiations. 'On the other side, we've also had several positives by way of the recently closed FTA with the UK and other countries. Even if these US tariffs do come about, we'll definitely figure out a way of redirecting or diversifying our trade to other markets. Therefore, at this point in time, we aren't seeing any signs of a slowdown or loss of jobs. It's an evolving situation and we'll get to know more in due course of time,' Narayanan said. According to him, the broader drag on employment stems from global consumption slowdown, tariff uncertainties, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts. CIEL HR MD and CEO Aditya Mishra said the tariff scenario is unsettling exporters in sectors deeply tied to the American market—including electronics, textiles, gems and jewellery, auto components, leather, footwear, shrimp and engineering goods. 'Even industries outside the direct tariff ambit, like pharmaceuticals, are feeling the ripple effect through costlier upstream chemicals and materials,' Mishra said. He added that uncertainty could persist through the third quarter of this financial year as negotiations unfold. While Mishra does not expect widespread layoffs, he noted that companies are already adopting cost-control measures—cutting discretionary spends, streamlining production, freezing hiring, and putting pressure on temporary and contractual roles. 'The immediate pressure will be on temporary and contract roles, particularly shop-floor workers, artisans, sales and logistics staff, and some mid-level managers in export-led units. This will have a cascading effect on thousands of MSMEs in the supply chain, which collectively account for a large share of employment,' he warned. Mishra also pointed to potential spillover risks for IT and global capability centres (GCCs). 'The IT sector is already experiencing slow spending and hiring, and this additional uncertainty could delay its recovery further. GCCs are likely to take a cautious approach to hiring and investments until there is greater clarity on trade negotiations and market stability. If the tariff situation persists, India's market share in the US could shrink, leading to longer-term repercussions for exporters and the industries that depend on them,' he said.
