St Mirren loan ace Zach Hemming insists Middlesbrough hold key to his future

Daily Record13-05-2025

The 25-year-old has been with the Buddies since January and is about to enter the final year of his contract on Teesside.
Zach Hemming says Middlesbrough know 'his side of the story' when it comes to his career as St Mirren enter talks to retain the big keeper.
Boss Stephen Robinson said that there had been positive discussions regarding Hemming but there wouldn't be a deal any time soon. The big Englishman has been a popular figure in Paisley since joining for the first time in 2023 before leaving and rejoining in January.

Hemming is aiming for a settled home life after his latest Buddies loan stint – his seventh in total and fifth year away on the road away from his Sky Bet Championship parent club.

The 25-year-old says everyone involved knows the score and he isn't thinking about his future until after the season has finished.
He said: 'I think there's been talks. Obviously it's one of those things where I've still got another year left on my contract at Middlesbrough so it's probably down to them more than anyone.
'I've said my side of the story and I think my family have obviously spoken, too. They've said their point of view and see what happens. But I think it's just down to Middlesbrough and then the two clubs to agree a deal.
'It might happen, it might not. But I just want to enjoy my football, the last two games and then in the summer I can speak about it a little bit more.
'I don't really get involved with it, just because I just like getting my head down and enjoying football [and not] overthinking it too much. Maybe I try and fix my performance when I'm talking about contracts. So, I just leave it down to my agent and talk from there.'
Hemming wants his family to be the ones who benefit from his next move – more so than he does after they have settled in Scotland. He credits wife Caitlin for helping him progress his career and making moves with their children work.

He said: 'I think it's probably easier for me to say it is or it's not [easy to settle] because obviously I've got 25 lads in the squad that I can make friends with. It's just obviously my missus and the kids, they've got to make their own friends.
'My missus has got a job up here at the minute so she's making a lot more friends. But if I maybe move somewhere else or go somewhere else on loan, then I've got to start all over again.
'She's moved away from her family, moved away from her friends back home and just helped my career and get me settled and hopefully I can just get her settled for a few years.'

What Stephen Robinson expects from young St Mirren duo after Arbroath title success

The Buddies welcome back Fraser Taylor and Callum Penman following their championship exploits at Gayfield. Stephen Robinson is expecting St Mirren's title-winning duo to be flying in pre-season. Buddies aces Fraser Taylor and Callum Penman return to Ralston this month having picked up League One championship medals while on loan at Arbroath. ‌ Taylor spent most of the campaign at Gayfield before Penman joined him for the second half of the Smokies' promotion push. ‌ Both players had already made their mark in black and white – Taylor set up Alex Iacovitti's goal in Saints' UEFA Conference League clash with SK Brann in Norway while Penman created two goals for Toyosi Olusanya in a Scottish Cup tie at Queen of the South. The League One player of the year award also went to Taylor and now the pair have the chance to impress gaffer Robbo as attention turns to the 2025-26 Premiership campaign. The Northern Irishman said: 'For Fraser and Callum to go out and get that experience is brilliant for them. Fraz has had a fantastic season and we're delighted for him. 'He now has to step up and it is a big, big step up for him. There's no doubting that but does he have the ability to do that? Definitely. His attitude and his desire will have him involved in our first team next season. Then it's up to him to break into that. 'People have to remember when they're crying out for players to come in, who are they taking out to make that happen? Mark O'Hara? Killian Phillips? We are a good side so players coming in have to be better than what's in the team. ‌ 'Fraz has got the talent and, most importantly, he has the mindset to keep pushing. We love him as a kid and as a player. We're really keen to see how he comes back and fights for his place in pre-season. 'I'm sure they'll come back flying for pre-season because they're both very grounded boys. They're very focused on being the best they can be and they're great examples for our other kids here. They've set standards, along with Evan Mooney.' Robbo will send more of the club's top talent on loan as he believes it is the best way for them to develop. ‌ The manager – who has been linked with a move for Jamaica defender Richard King – added: 'I don't believe in Under-23s football. I don't believe that compares to playing against grown men. It's a different world away. 'They play 500 passes in their own six-yard box and people say it's fantastic. You need to go to an Arbroath to then face Livingston away or Morton away. 'You need to go to these places to improve, and develop that mentality when crowds are shouting at you – good and bad. That toughens you up mentality.'

Next Middlesbrough Odds & Betting: Gerrard Top Candidate For Riverside Job

Middlesbrough could be swapping one ex-England international for another in the dugout if the next Middlesbrough manager odds are anything to go with Steven Gerrard now the favourite to replace Michael Carrick. Carrick was sacked nearly five weeks after Boro finished 10th in the Championship, four points off the play-off positions, confirming the Teessiders to a ninth successive season in the second tier. Carrick guided Boro to the play-offs in his first season but has missed out in the last two seasons and after finishing with fewer points than the previous campaign, coupled with having to watch their local rivals, Sunderland, get promoted, the decision was made to remove the ex-Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder. Assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also left the club, so it is a chance for a clean sweep at the Riverside. Next Middlesbrough Manager Odds Another England star set for the Riverside Steve Cooper was the initial favourite installed by betting sites, and was quickly followed by former Luton boss Rob Edwards but now former England and Liverpool star Steven Gerrard is favourite at odds of just 11/8. Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January, after 18 months in charge. He previously managed Aston Villa and Rangers, where he led the Scottish side Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years in 2020-21. It is understood that interviews for the vacant role are taking place this week, and whether Gerrard is among those on the shortlist remains to be seen. He admitted in April that he was enjoying taking some time out but will the lure of the Riverside prove too strong? He might not have any experience of the Championship, but second favourite Edwards certainly does, and he has been out of work since the Hatters sacked him in January. The side were just two points above the Championship relegation zone, but that shouldn't overshadow the amazing job he did in taking them up to the Premier League. He guided the side to a play-off final win over Coventry City in May 2023 to see them back in the top-flight for the first time in 30 years, and Middlesbrough would be love to be celebrating that this time next year. Edwards is 5/2 to be the next Middlesbrough manager, but if they do want him then they may face competition with Bristol City also reportedly interested. Edwards has also been installed as the even-money favourite to be the Robins boss. Cooper is next on the list in the next Middlesbrough manager betting market and reports in the north-east suggest he's been shortlisted for an interview. He is another manager who has achieved promotion from the Championship, taking Nottingham Forest up in May 2022. He has been out of work since leaving Leicester in November, but he has admitted he is ready to return to management, albeit with a preference to work abroad. Some betting sites have cut Sean Dyche's odds to 5/1, but there's been no mention of the ex-Everton boss being in the frame in local reporting, despite the success he enjoyed at this level as Burnley manager. Another name linked is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was the favourite for the Southampton job before Will Still was named manager last month. He guided Wednesday to 12th in the league last season and with everything currently going on at the club, who have been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to unpaid wages, he might be looking for an escape route. Rohl is also on the shortlist to be the next Leicester City boss, according to reports, and is as short as 1/2 for that position on certain betting apps. Boro Could Consider Challinor Of those contenders with double-figure prices, talk of a move for 25/1 shot Robbie Keane has been dismissed, but there's a possibility the Tessiders talk to ex-Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil, who is out of work after leaving Wolves last season and is a 12/1 chance. A new name on the list is Stockport manager Dave Challinor, who has done an outstanding job with the League One side, taking them from the National League up to League One in three seasons. The Hatters reached the League One play-offs last season before they were beaten in the semi-finals by Leyton Orient. He has also achieved promotion from the National League North with Fylde and promotion back to the EFL with Hartlepool United so he has had success wherever he has been. Football betting sites are offering 25/1 on him to make the move to the Riverside Stadium but it is nice to see the former Tranmere Rovers and Stockport defender finally getting some recognition. Please gamble responsibly Sports betting can be addictive, so bettors should take precautions to keep themselves safe when using gambling sites. The key numbers behind Raith Rovers' move for first summer signing Jai Rowe

Raith Rovers' first signing of the summer, Jai Rowe, has not come from the usual merry-go-round of players available in Scottish football. For a right-back, the recruit from England's National League has come from somewhat leftfield. The 23-year-old had been offered a new deal at former club Boston United, but has instead opted for a new challenge in the Scottish Championship. Courier Sport has taken a look at the numbers that have made the promising defender attractive to Raith. Rowe turns 24 on August 8 but has already packed a lot into his career. Starting out in first-team football with Barwell in England's seventh-tier at the age of just 16, he now has seven seasons under his belt. With three of those years spent in League Two, the full-back has built up a considerable amount of top-team experience for someone his age. Raith will be optimistic the Englishman can hit the ground running at Stark's Park. Rowe has penned a two-year deal with Rovers, and will welcome the stability after going summer to summer down south. Vice-captain Ross Matthews has signed on for just one more year and Callum Smith has agreed only six months as he completes his comeback from a serious knee injury. Previously, others have been handed only 12-month agreements and shorter. So, two years is an indication Raith do not see Rowe as much of a gamble and they expect him to make an impact not just next season but in 2026/27 as well. Rowe featured in 55 games for Boston last season – every single match they played. Of those 55 matches, incredibly he started 52, with his three substitute's outings coming in the league against York City, FC Halifax Town and AFC Fylde. He was Boston's most consistent performer, topping their appearance charts. With Raith having struggled with injuries and consistency at times last term, they will be hoping Rowe can continue being available and dependable. For a full-back, Rowe's goal-scoring statistics are impressive. He has netted 22 times over the course of his career so far, and comes north after his most prolific campaign. The versatile and athletic player was Boston's second-top scorer last season with nine goals in his 55 appearances. It is clear he will add something to Raith in attack as well as defence. Rovers will be hopeful Rowe provides the answer to what has become something of a problem position of late. Over the last two seasons, they have had four right-backs come and go without settling. Ross Millen was a regular but was frozen out due to a disagreement behind the scenes midway through season 2023/24. Since then, James Brown on loan from St Johnstone, ex-Dundee United defender Kieran Freeman and one-time Chelsea youngster Fankaty Dabo have failed to prove themselves a long-term fit on the right side of Raith's defence.
