Google Photos could soon get a surprising third-party integration (APK teardown)

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
TL;DR Google Photos is testing a CapCut button to help users edit Memories in the ByteDance-owned app.
We spotted and were able to surface the button while conducting an APK teardown of the Google Photos Android app.
The button only appears for Memories made up of photos and does not show up for a video-only memory.
In a rather surprising move, Google seems to be quietly testing a new third-party integration in its Photos app, the likes of which we've never seen before. It's extremely rare for Google to promote a third-party app within its own app, especially one owned by a company under scrutiny in several regions, including the US, but that's exactly what may be happening.

An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
While digging through the code of version 7.38 of the Google Photos app, we spotted and managed to surface a new 'Edit in CapCut' button directly linked to the popular video editing tool owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.
The new 'Edit in CapCut' button appears within the Memories viewer of Google Photos, a feature that auto-generates highlight reels of your past photos and videos. The screenshots below show the new, full-screen Memories UI in Google Photos, a change we first observed back in February. But now, for memories made up of photos, the 'Edit in CapCut' option shows up prominently in the bottom left corner of the screen.
If the memory is a video spotlight (a video-only memory), the CapCut option doesn't appear. For users who don't have CapCut installed, tapping the button triggers a Play Store prompt to install the app. If you have CapCut already on your device, the selected memory will likely be downloaded and sent directly to the CapCut editor for further customization. We couldn't get CapCut to open up after pressing the button since the app isn't available in India, where our contributor Assemble Debug discovered the integration.
This makes us wonder why Google would promote a non-Google, ByteDance-owned app in Photos? CapCut is banned in countries like India, meaning this feature will likely be inaccessible or broken for users in the region. The app was also temporarily suspended in the United States, but came back online earlier this year. Perhaps ByteDance has offered incentives to Google to push CapCut through one of its most widely used apps.
Given that the feature hasn't rolled out widely or even appeared in the app's beta version, it's possible that Google is just testing the waters or planning a limited regional launch.

Pixel Watch 4 leak once again points to life-saving feature (APK teardown)

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR Recent code findings in the Satellite Gateway app corroborate that the Pixel Watch 4 could feature emergency satellite communications. This satellite connectivity feature appears to be exclusive to Pixel Watch devices, with code specifically referencing 'isPixelWatch.' It's possible the feature could be routed through a satellite-compatible Pixel phone, potentially allowing it to come to older Pixel Watch generations in the future. The Pixel Watch 4 is expected to introduce some nifty changes, like its polarizing new charger, which you can love and hate simultaneously, and even a Breathing Emergencies tool to detect when your oxygen level falls too low. Leaks have suggested that we can look forward to Emergency Satellite Communications on the Pixel Watch 4. Now, we've spotted more clues to corroborate that this feature is indeed coming to Google's upcoming smartwatch. Authority Insights story on Android Authority. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. The Satellite Gateway app is one of the apps responsible for the Satellite SOS features on Pixel phones. In the latest v20250707 of the Satellite Gateway app, we've spotted several bits of code that directly reference the feature within the context of a smartwatch: Code Copy Text " Here, ' references the Adaptive Connectivity Service app, which helps direct the UI for pointing your device towards a satellite for connection. We also see a mention of 'watchui' in the activity, which clearly indicates the feature making its way to a smartwatch. But is the emergency satellite communications feature coming to all Wear OS smartwatches? Several parts of the obfuscated code for the satellite connectivity feature includes checks like 'isPixelDevice:%s' and, more importantly, 'isPixelWatch:%s,' indicating that the feature is most likely destined only for the Pixel Watch. The next question is whether the emergency satellite communications feature will be exclusive to the Pixel Watch 4. We haven't spotted any code that specifically ties the emergency satellite communications to the Pixel Watch 4. Further, devices need specialized hardware for satellite connectivity. We've seen Google's biggest competitor, Apple, offer features like Emergency SOS via satellite for the Apple Watch, but this connection is routed through a compatible iPhone rather than undertaken through the smartwatch itself. It would make sense if Google adopts a similar route, as internal space is significantly constrained within a smartwatch. Suppose Google routes Pixel Watch 4's upcoming emergency satellite communications feature through the phone (potentially a Pixel phone only, i.e., serving merely as an extension for Satellite SOS on Pixel). In that case, there's also the possibility that the feature could come to older generations of the Pixel Watch. Don't hold your breath, though, as the company might keep the feature exclusive to the new watch hardware and only open it up to older watches through software updates farther in the future. Google hasn't shared any confirmation for the Pixel Watch 4 or its leaked Satellite SOS feature. We'll keep you updated when we learn more. Follow

S&P 500 Rally Faces $11 Trillion Gauntlet of Big Tech Earnings

(Bloomberg) -- The S&P 500 Index's relentless advance to record highs faces a crucial test this week, with four technology behemoths worth a combined $11.3 trillion reporting earnings over a two-day stretch. The High Costs of Trump's 'Big Beautiful' New Car Loan Deduction Can This Bridge Ease the Troubled US-Canadian Relationship? Budapest's Most Historic Site Gets a Controversial Rebuild Trump Administration Sues NYC Over Sanctuary City Policy This earnings season is off to a solid start, but now all eyes are on quarterly results from Microsoft Corp. and Meta Platforms Inc. on Wednesday, and Apple Inc. and Inc. on Thursday. The announcements will give investors a key glimpse into the health of businesses ranging from electronic devices and software to cloud-computing and e-commerce. A strong showing is critical to sustaining the S&P 500's rally. The four firms — members of the Magnificent Seven — account for a fifth of the market-capitalization-weighted benchmark. What's more, Meta and Microsoft are among the top three point gainers in the S&P this year, after Nvidia Corp. With valuations climbing, the focus will be not only on whether they beat estimates, but also on their outlook for the coming quarters. 'The bar is set pretty high,' said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Investment Management. 'The Magnificent Seven in particular, they really need to deliver now to keep this momentum going.' So far, Corporate America appears to be taking President Donald Trump's tariffs in stride. With about a third of S&P 500 members having reported, roughly 82% have beaten profit forecasts, on track for the best quarter in about four years, data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence show. The performance has helped lift the benchmark by about 2% since the cycle kicked off around two weeks ago. To be fair, analysts had slashed estimates over the past few months amid concerns about the impact of tariffs on consumer spending and profit margins. While Big-Tech projections have come down too, the surge in stock prices has kept expectations elevated. The Magnificent Seven, which also includes Nvidia, Alphabet Inc. and Tesla Inc., is projected to deliver combined year-over-year earnings growth of 16% in the second quarter, according to data compiled by BI. That's down from expectations of 19% at the end of March, before Trump announced his sweeping tariffs. Nvidia is the final member of the group to report, in late August. The S&P 500, meanwhile, is expected to show annual profit growth of 4.5%, down from the 7.5% projected in March. It's all amping up the pressure on Big Tech. Many of the companies may need to give rosy forecasts to justify valuations, according to Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Advisor Services. 'They're likely going to have to say that the rest of the year or the next quarter looks positive, either re-affirming guidance or even upping guidance,' he said. AI Divergence Some of Magnificent Seven have failed to live up to the moniker this year as artificial intelligence has again become the dominant theme separating winners from losers in the stock market. Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia account for nearly half of the S&P 500's gain this year, while shares of companies including Apple have weakened amid struggles with the technology. That divergence was on display last week, when Alphabet rose after reporting strong earnings growth, while a bleak outlook for electric-vehicle sales sent Tesla's stock tumbling. Investors will watch capital-spending plans particularly closely. Many companies have increased spending on AI infrastructure, which has made the makers of computing gear like Nvidia and Super Micro Computer Inc. some of the best-performing stocks of the year. All signs point to that continuing. In total, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta are projected to pump $317 billion into capital spending in their current fiscal years, with that figure rising to $350 billion in 2026, according to the average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Awaiting Payoff Investors have rewarded such aggressive plans in recent months, especially Meta, shares of which have rallied about 22% this year. But ultimately, investors have to see the payoff, says Gabriela Santos, chief strategist for the Americas at JPMorgan Asset Management. 'Investors are becoming much more overt in saying, 'show me the money,'' she said. 'At these levels, especially for large-cap tech, we need to see monetization rather than a promise of monetization coming at some point down the line.' Magnificent Seven valuations have jumped from the depths of the tariff-induced selloff in April, but they still remain well below peak levels. The group is priced at 28 times projected profits, compared with a high of 34 in December while the S&P 500 is priced at 22 times. 'While Big Tech P/Es can look high on the surface, if you consider the growth and the high free cash flow and the strong return on invested capital, in many cases they're attractively priced,' said Tony DeSpirito, managing director and head of US fundamental equities at BlackRock. Firefly Aerospace targets $5.5 billion valuation in US IPO

(Reuters) -Space and defense technology firm Firefly Aerospace is targeting a valuation of about $5.5 billion in its U.S. initial public offering, as investor demand for newly listed stocks shows signs of a sustained rebound. The company is aiming to sell its shares between $35 and $39 apiece to raise as much as $631.8 million, a regulatory filing showed on Monday. The U.S. IPO market is showing signs of steady recovery in 2025 after a slump of almost three years, as easing interest rates, improved market conditions and a backlog of high-growth companies revive investor appetite. Several notable listings, including neo-bank Chime and stablecoin issuer Circle, have rekindled optimism in recent weeks, with more firms preparing to test the waters in the second half of the year. Firefly Aerospace expects to trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol 'FLY'. Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Jefferies and Wells Fargo Securities are the lead underwriters of the offering.
