3 model village heads from Gujarat get invited to I-Day celebrations in Delhi

Gandhinagar: The sarpanches of three model villages in Gujarat will be attending Independence Day celebration in New Delhi on Friday, on invite. Bhimasar village in Kutch district, Akhod in Bharuch, and Sultanpur in Navsari gained the distinction of 'Model Villages of Rural Development' and 'ODF Plus Model Villages', an official statement said on Thursday, adding that the elected representatives of these villages redefined rural governance by blending urban-level facilities with community-led initiatives. Bhimasar's woman sarpanch, Dai Humble, transformed her village into a clean, green, and self-sustaining community with door-to-door waste collection, a full sewage system, and the Green Bhimasar project, which encourages every family to plant 10 trees. After month-long repairs, ferry back on Chorao-Ribandar route

Panaji: The ferry boat called Betim, which was submerged for 10 days following an incident on June 23, finally resumed operations on the Chorao-Ribandar route after a month of undergoing repairs. The vessel was salvaged after nine days. Vikram Raje Bhosale, director of the river navigation department (RND), said that the salvage operation caused damage to the canopy. 'Both the engines and gearboxes were overhauled due to water immersion. The winch hydraulic system also required an overhaul,' he said. Additionally, life-saving apparatus, electrical systems, batteries, beds, and firefighting equipment were replaced, and the ferry received a complete repainting. The ferry boat was salvaged through a combined effort by departmental staff and two private agencies—Vinaydeep Enterprises and Kanishka Salvage and Underwater Services. The total cost of the salvage and repair operation of the vessel was approximately Rs 30.2 lakh. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cusat students seek to improve campus facilities

Kochi: Students of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), under the banner of Students' Federation of India (SFI), marched to administrative block on Thursday, pressing a charter of demands aimed at improving campus facilities and addressing student grievances. According to SFI unit president Mohammed Muhsin, demands were made after campaigning in classrooms and seeking responses from students about their needs. Demands included standardizing hostel fees across campus at Rs 320 and filling vacancies by appointing permanent faculty members and lab assistants in various departments. They also demanded an immediate stop to collection of additional university fees for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) courses beyond regular fees paid by students. Other demands included urgent repairs to dilapidated campus roads, restoring non-functional equipment in departments such as biotechnology and school of engineering (SOE) and ensuring revaluation results are announced before supplementary examinations. Students also sought early access to open-air auditorium and provision of Wi-Fi in all hostels. Pointing to delays in issuing provisional certificates, SFI said this was causing difficulties for students seeking higher education and urged timely issuance. They also demanded that hostel allotment system revert to earlier method where students had more choice and called for installation of lifts and ramps at SOE to make campus disabled-friendly. Students have also sought removal of fines imposed on students who visit other hostels for academic purposes. "We have also submitted the demands before university registrar for urgent consideration," said Muhsin. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
