After month-long repairs, ferry back on Chorao-Ribandar route
The ferry boat called Betim, which was submerged for 10 days following an incident on June 23, finally resumed operations on the Chorao-Ribandar route after a month of undergoing repairs.
The vessel was salvaged after nine days.
Vikram Raje Bhosale, director of the river navigation department (RND), said that the salvage operation caused damage to the canopy.
'Both the engines and gearboxes were overhauled due to water immersion. The winch hydraulic system also required an overhaul,' he said. Additionally, life-saving apparatus, electrical systems, batteries, beds, and firefighting equipment were replaced, and the ferry received a complete repainting.
The ferry boat was salvaged through a combined effort by departmental staff and two private agencies—Vinaydeep Enterprises and Kanishka Salvage and Underwater Services.
The total cost of the salvage and repair operation of the vessel was approximately Rs 30.2 lakh.

Overdue Book Returned To US Library 82 Years Later: 'Hope There's No Late Fee'
An overdue book has been returned to the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL), nearly 82 years after its due date. The book, Your Child, His Family, and Friends, written by Frances Bruce Strain, was checked out in July 1943 and was due 28 days later. The book was handed back in June and came with a letter, addressing the potential reason why its return was delayed for decades. The writer, identified as PAAG from Oregon, stated that they found the book among their father's possessions after his death. "When I noticed it was from the San Antonio Public Library, I decided to send it back to you," the letter states, adding that their grandmother must have checked out the book when their father was 11 years old, before being transferred to work at the US Embassy in Mexico City. "She must have taken the book with her, and some 82 years later, it ended up in my possession." In their letter, the writer goes on to express their gratitude for the library's service and even appears to joke about the book's late return. "I hope there is no late fee for it because Grandma won't be able to pay for it anymore." See the post here: Book on display Though SAPL does not charge late fees for overdue books since 2021, it added that the cost would have been around Rs 78,604 ($896.79). The library stated that the book was received in good condition and will be on display this month in the Central Library's lobby. Afterwards, it will be donated to the Friends of SAPL for resale at the Book Cellar, with proceeds supporting the library. Notably, Your Child, His Family, and Friends is a self-help book about parenting from the 1940s. Previously, in 2023, James Clerk Maxwell's An Elementary Treatise on Electricity was returned to the library 119 years after its due date. The book was checked out in 1904 from the New Bedford Free Public Library in Massachusetts.

Deen Dayal Upadhyay hostel set to accommodate 1k post-matriculation students
Mysuru: The multi-storied Deen Dayal Upadhyay hostel, aiming to help over 1,000 boys and girls, studying in post-matriculation, is all set for inauguration in Saraswathipuram, in the city. The department of social welfare, other backward classes, and minority welfare have jointly constructed this hostel at the cost of Rs 82.5 crore opposite Saraswathipuram police station on a plot belonging to the University of Mysore. The facility will help students from the economically weaker section, seeking hostel facility in Mysuru. The department of public works, which took up the construction of the four-storied hostel complex, have almost completed it and handed it over to the respective social welfare department, other backward classes, tribal welfare, and minority welfare department for the allotment of hostel facilities to students seeking occupancy. The hostel work started in the first week of June 2023. Two multi-storied buildings were constructed separately for post-matriculation boys and girls. Each building has two undergraduate blocks for accommodation of 600 students and one post-graduation block for accommodation of 400 students. It has facilities like toilets, bathrooms, dining, and kitchen. Even though the OBC department has set up both 43 pre-matric and post-matric hostels, the department receives 5,500 applications from community students seeking admissions to its hostels spread over different locations in the city every year. However, the department was able to accommodate hostel facilities for 60% of its applicants, leaving 40% deprived of hostel facilities and facing challenges in admissions to all. The minority welfare department also received 2,500 applications from students seeking hostel facilities for its 14 post-matric hostels in the city. This department also fails to provide admissions to all due to a scarcity of facilities. The social welfare department also received 5,000 applications for its 30 hostels, and the scheduled tribal welfare department received 700 applications for its students in four hostels. Speaking to TOI, PWD executive engineer Padhmanabha said that the department completed the construction of these two buildings and handed them over to the departments concerned. District tribal welfare officer MK Mallesh said that the construction of the hostel in Saraswathipuram will help accommodate post-matriculation students in the city. Belagavi's 24x7 drinking water upply reaches new wards
Pics: Minister Satish Jarkiholi inaugurated the water supply trial run in Kanabargi (Belagavi North) on Friday; MLA Abhay Patil opened the water supply scheme at Rani Channamma Nagar (Belagavi South) on Friday evening Belagavi: For over a decade, only 10 out of the 58 wards of the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) were receiving a 24x7 water supply. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After 16 years of its implementation, four more wards were added on Friday—two in Belagavi North and two in Belagavi South assembly constituency. According to sources in L&T, which is responsible for the city's water supply, the 24x7 water supply scheme will gradually be extended to the remaining wards. In the initial demonstration project, the Karnataka Urban Water Supply Modernisation Project (KUWSMP) commenced under BCC in March 2008. The project started with 10 demo zones, providing 24x7 water to approximately 11,000 tap connections. It is now being extended to the entire city. The project involves laying new pipelines, establishing new water connections, and improving the overall water supply infrastructure. The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) is overseeing the project, with private companies like Larsen and Toubro (L&T) taking on various roles in implementation and operation. In a significant step towards ensuring equitable and reliable water supply, the KUIDFC and L&T commissioned a 24x7 water supply in the Belagavi South and North areas on the occasion of Independence Day. The project, undertaken under the KUWSMP, aims to provide a 24x7 pressurised water supply to households in the identified zones. In Belagavi South Abhay Patil, MLA of Belagavi South, inaugurated the water supply scheme at Rani Channamma Nagar Stage 1 & 2, at Zone No: 6 and 3A. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The inaugural event was graced by BCC mayor Mangesh Pawar, deputy mayor Vani Vilas Joshi dignitaries, and area residents. Presently, around 1,500 households will receive a daily water supply, and after a trial run, both zones will be provided with continuous, pressurised, round-the-clock water supply. In Belagavi North Satish Jarkiholi, minister for public works, inaugurated the 24x7 water supply trial run in Zone No. 26 A & B of Kanabargi. Asif (Raju) Sait, MLA Belagavi North, Belagavi MPJagadish Shettar, MLC Channaraj Hattiholi and ward corporators were present. This initiative will benefit around 2,000 households with continuous, pressurised water supply after a trial run. This initiative ensures households receive 24x7 water supply with adequate pressure, assured quality, and reliable frequency, providing long-awaited relief to residents who previously faced irregular and inadequate water distribution. Shashikumar S Hatti, executive engineer of the project implementation unit, said that the 24x7 water supply commissioning will enhance residents' quality of life in Belagavi by providing reliable and consistent water, marking a major milestone in the region's journey to equitable water access. The project is expected to be completed in the coming years, with a target of providing 87,000 tap connections.
