The Couture Challenge—It Was a Face-Off of Extremes on the Streets at the Fall 2025 Shows

Do opposites attract? Couture might be all about glamour and glitz on the runway, but that's not the whole story. Take Pierpaolo Piccioli, who showed up at Demna's final Balenciaga show on the back of a motorcycle in dad sneakers. Or consider Sofia Coppola, who proves that you can in fact wear a pair of simple white jeans to sit front-row at Chanel. But of course couture isn't couture without some opulence, of the kind that Cardi B. delivered at Schiaparelli and Lisa Rinna gave at Balenciaga. Below we've rounded up the extremes of street style at the fall 2025 couture shows in Paris.
Round 1: Jeans or Couture?
Are you more Sofia C or Cardi B?

Barcelona star Yamal faces backlash for reportedly hiring people with dwarfism for birthday party

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has been criticized and could face an investigation for reportedly hiring people with dwarfism as entertainers during his lavish 18th birthday party this weekend. Spain's Ministry of Social Rights has asked prosecutors to open a probe into the hiring and exposition of the entertainers. Ministry director Jesús Martín Blanco told Europa Press that such hirings 'take us back to the Middle Ages.' A local association for people with disabilities had already condemned the alleged hirings, saying it would take action 'legally and socially' against those responsible for promoting such actions. Spanish radio station RAC1 published an interview with one of the entertainers who said he was in the party. The man said they were all treated with respect. He complained about the reaction against Yamal for hiring them. Yamal celebrated his birthday with a party filled with celebrities. It also included some of his Barcelona teammates. ___ AP soccer:

Dolly Parton Earns Her First New Hit Song In More Than A Decade

Dolly Parton returns to the Official Singles chart after nearly 15 years with Beyoncé's 'Tyrant,' ... More which debuts at No. 83 in the U.K. after going viral. ARLINGTON, TEXAS - NOVEMBER 23: Dolly Parton performs during halftime in the game between the Washington Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on November 23, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by) Dolly Parton's collection of hits on the Official Singles chart — the list of the biggest songs in the United Kingdom — runs surprisingly short. The country legend has only ever landed 11 appearances on the tally, as country music isn't nearly as popular on that side of the Atlantic as it is in the United States. The superstar scores a surprising win this week on the competitive roster alongside one of the most famous musicians in the world, returning for the first time in well over a decade. Dolly Parton And Beyoncé Debut Together Parton debuts on the Official Singles chart at No. 83 this week with "Tyrant." The track is fronted by Beyoncé, who recruited Parton to appear on her first country album, Cowboy Carter. "Tyrant" was never shared as an official single from the project, and it was originally released alongside the album in the spring of 2024. The tune has recently gone viral, and is now one of the 100 biggest songs in the U.K. Dolly Parton's First New Hit in More than a Decade "Tyrant" earns Parton her eleventh hit on the Official Singles chart and her first in almost 15 years. The last time the singer-songwriter launched a new track on the tally was in September 2011, when "Together You and I" entered and peaked at No. 67. 'Jolene' Started It All Parton first appeared on the Official Singles chart in May 1976 with "Jolene," which has gone on to become not just one of her most famous tracks, but one of the most celebrated country tunes in history. That song is tied with "Islands in the Stream," her collaboration with Kenny Rogers, for the honor of being her highest-rising win, as both peaked at No. 7 decades ago. Beyoncé Returns As Well Beyoncé earns her first new hit on the Official Singles chart in a little over a year. Coincidentally, in April 2024, she debuted her version of "Jolene," which peaked at No. 8, just one spot above "II Most Wanted," her collaboration with Miley Cyrus, which stalled at No. 9. Several tracks from Cowboy Carter, including "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages," also appeared on the list. Beyoncé has now claimed dozens of wins on the roster throughout her career. 'Tyrant' Reaches Multiple Charts At Once As "Tyrant" arrives on the Official Singles chart, it also appears for the first time on the Official Hip-Hop and R&B Singles tally. Parton is new to that list, but Beyoncé has been reaching that ranking with a variety of tunes from many different projects for decades. "Tyrant" opens at No. 17 this week.

BBC Insists Its Disney Partnership Remains Strong in Wake of ‘Doctor Who' Doubts

Ever since the latest season of Doctor Who came to a messy end a few months ago, the biggest question on audiences' minds (among the many questions raised by that finale) is when, or if, we might expect to see the show return to our screens. The further we've moved from the season without news other than that there is no news about the BBC renewing its funding and distribution deal with Disney for the series, the more doubts have grown. But the BBC continues to stress that it is focused on working with Disney… even if concrete news about Doctor Who remains impossible to find. Speaking to the press after the release of the BBC's Annual Report (via Deadline), BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell stressed that the BBC remains committed to Doctor Who's future, even as it declines to officially announce the show's continuation. 'Fans love the Doctor Who brand. It's been that way since before I was in short trousers,' Fussell said, adding that the BBC saw its deal with Disney to partially fund and distribute Doctor Who internationally as 'crucial' and that BBC Studios is 'really committed to Doctor Who and is continuing to look at ways in which we can bring the show to fans.' The BBC works with Disney on not just Doctor Who, but multiple BBC Studios shows, including Dancing With the Stars, the U.S. version of Strictly Come Dancing, and Bluey, including a financing deal on the latter's upcoming feature film. Fussell's comments, while optimistic, do not confirm when or if Doctor Who will return any time soon, in the wake of Ncuti Gatwa's exit as the Doctor and the surprise arrival of former star Billie Piper as a potential next or altered incarnation of the Time Lord. The comments come in the wake of increasing doubt that Doctor Who can or will return to production within the next few years. The possibility of a return in 2026 or even 2027 at the earliest is likely off the table at this point with no official word from Disney or the BBC about continuation of their production deal. With both Gatwa himself and current showrunner Russell T Davies uncommitted about the series' future, it's possible that if Doctor Who does return, it might do so several years down the line. While fans wait for that, there are some small slices of Doctor Who on the way. The last element of the current deal with Disney, a five-episode spinoff miniseries titled The War Between The Land and The Sea is expected to potentially release by the end of this year. The BBC also recently confirmed it is looking for a production partner on a new animated iteration of the series, aimed at young audiences through its CBeebies platform. Want more io9 news?
