Privatisation of SOEs: PC to be given full legal autonomy: PM
The prime minister, while chairing a review meeting on progress of privatisation of SOEs, emphasised that reviving the country's ailing economy depends on the timely and transparent divestment of underperforming public sector entities.
He described privatisation as a top priority for his administration, saying it must be handled 'effectively, comprehensively and efficiently.'
SOE Act and MoF reporting: CCoSOEs grants SPD entities full exemptions
'Illegal occupation of valuable lands of national institutions is unacceptable under any circumstances,' he said, while urging caution in the disposal of such land. 'Every possible precaution should be taken.'
The meeting focused on reviewing the progress of institutions slated for privatisation in 2024, including high-profile entities such as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and several power transmission companies, commonly referred to as Discos.
PM Sharif directed that the Commission's efforts align with market conditions and adhere strictly to legal and transparency requirements. 'All decisions should be implemented fully and effectively,' he said. 'I will regularly monitor the progress of the ongoing work in the Privatization Commission.'
The Privatization Commission officials briefed the prime minister on a phased strategy for privatising state enterprises, structured around legal, financial, and sector-specific factors.
They noted that the plan, approved by the federal cabinet, is designed to meet both economic and institutional benchmarks within a fixed timeframe.
The prime minister also underscored the importance of consulting professional experts and maintaining international standards throughout the privatisation and restructuring process.
The push to privatise loss-making enterprises comes amid mounting fiscal pressures, with the government seeking to reduce its financial burden and attract private investment into sectors long plagued by inefficiencies and mismanagement.
The meeting was attended by federal ministers Awais Leghari and Ahad Cheema, Chairman of the Privatization Commission Muhammad Ali, along with senior government officials and advisers.

Remittance incentive scheme to continue
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday announced the continuation of the government's facilitation scheme aimed at encouraging overseas Pakistanis to remit money through formal banking channels. The initiative, titled the Workers' Remittances Incentive Scheme, seeks to support the country's economy by bolstering foreign exchange reserves and maintaining external account stability. In a directive issued to the Ministry of Finance, the prime minister ordered the immediate release of funds on a priority basis to sustain the scheme. Pakistan govt decides to continue remittance incentive scheme The move comes in the wake of a record-high $38.3 billion in remittances received during the financial year 2025 - a historic milestone that played a pivotal role in helping the country achieve a current account surplus for the first time in 14 years. 'Overseas Pakistanis are our strength and a valuable national asset,' PM Sharif said, adding that the hard-earned remittances sent by Pakistanis living abroad are deeply valued and contribute significantly to national development. He also noted that these inflows had not only helped manage the country's swelling import bill but also strengthened its foreign exchange reserves. 'From migrant labourers to expatriate businessmen, all have played an integral role in supporting Pakistan's economy through remittances.' PM Sharif affirmed his government's commitment to removing hurdles in the remittance process and making the system more efficient and accessible. The continuation of the incentive scheme is seen as part of broader efforts to formalise remittance channels and stabilise the national economy. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal has urged international stakeholders to explore partnerships in Pakistan's rapidly evolving health landscape, reported Radio Pakistan on Saturday. Representing Pakistan at Boao Forum for Asia's (BFA) Global Health Forum in Beijing, he said Pakistan presents immense opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and investment. Kamal invited global partners to explore investment avenues, emphasising Pakistan's commitment to providing strong returns, streamlined regulation, and government support. Established in 2001, the Boao Forum for Asia is a non-governmental and non-profit international conference organisation. Since its inception, with a focus on Asia and a global perspective, the Boao Forum for Asia has been committed to promoting regional cooperation in Asia and common development across the world. Apart from traditional economic issues, the conference has been focusing on health issues closely related to economic development and the people's well-being. 'Pakistan is ready for partnerships in global health,' said Kamal, according to a post on his X account, highlighting that250 million population, nursing cooperation, and digital reforms are our assets. 'Economy cannot progress without health,' said Kamal. During the address, the health minister informed that the recently inaugurated digital licensing and registration system for medical devices 'will complete licensing in 20 days.' Just days ago, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the digital licensing system, terming it a significant milestone in healthcare reform and transparency. Sharif said that while revolutionising the country's healthcare sector is a daunting task, it is achievable through collective effort. 'It is difficult, but not impossible,' he said. The newly-launched digital platform – initiated under the previous coalition government – will enable medical device manufacturers to complete licensing documentation online and receive approvals within 20 days. This sharply reduces the years-long delays that, according to Sharif, had previously encouraged corruption and inefficiency.

PM Shehbaz approves first-ever ‘Skills Impact Bond'
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday approved the country's first-ever Skills Impact Bond, a performance-based financing model aimed at equipping the country's youth with employable, demand-driven skills to enhance their participation in national and global labour markets. The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by the prime minister on the youth employment roadmap. The Skills Impact Bond, based on a 'Pay-for-Success' mechanism, will attract private sector investment for skill development, with public or donor funds disbursed only upon achievement of independently verified outcomes such as job placements or income thresholds. PM Shehbaz directs modern IT training for youth to make Pakistan regional tech hub Highlighting the centrality of youth in Pakistan's economic development strategy, Sharif directed officials to enhance training opportunities in modern and market-aligned skill sets. 'Pakistan's talented youth are the country's most valuable asset,' he said, adding that providing quality education and employable skills would change the country's destiny. The prime minister stressed the need to prepare skilled individuals for overseas employment, including through training in local languages of potential destination countries. He instructed that a detailed roadmap, based on estimated job opportunities both domestically and internationally, be submitted for review. 'I will personally assess progress every two months,' he added. Sharif also called for a targeted awareness campaign to inform the masses, particularly the youth, about employment opportunities available through the government's Digital Youth Hub platform. Officials informed the meeting that more than 500,000 individuals have registered on the Digital Youth Hub, while over 1.7 million have downloaded the mobile application. The platform currently lists over 47,000 domestic job vacancies, 100,000 overseas opportunities, and more than 2,000 scholarships. Additionally, over 500 institutions – including Pakistani embassies, private companies, government agencies, and international NGOs such as the United Nations – are linked to the portal. The performance of relevant departments, including the Prime Minister's Youth Programme, Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, and the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), was reviewed and termed satisfactory by the prime minister. He emphasised the importance of continued collaboration among these institutions to ensure tangible outcomes.
