Patna/New Delhi: Even as the Election Commission of India (ECI) claimed on Saturday that not a single claim or objection had been filed within the first 24 hours of publishing Bihar's draft electoral rolls, the CPI(ML) claimed it had submitted an objection letter via email regarding names of living voters being listed as dead.
The ECI had released the draft rolls on Friday and issued its first daily status update on Saturday.
While the EC maintained that none of the 1.6 lakh booth-level agents (BLAs) deployed by a dozen political parties filed any official objections by 3pm on Aug 2, CPI(ML) state secretary Kunal alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise. He submitted proof of two such voters — Kudrat Khan and Shailesh Prasad — from Bhore assembly constituency, whose names, he claimed, had been wrongly included in the list of deceased voters.
"At booth number 339, Sisai village, the names of people who are alive have been declared dead. Meanwhile, five names earlier listed as dead at booth number 317 have now been re-included, but two remain missing," Kunal said. He demanded assembly-wise and booth-wise details of the 65,64,075 voters deleted in the first phase of the SIR.
Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani alleged, "My wife lives in Mumbai, but her name has been added here.

The ECI is working for the BJP. Democracy is in danger. Every citizen should think about this. We will take to the streets over this issue."
However, the EC reiterated that all parties had agreed to review the boothwise rolls and yet "no BLA of any political party has submitted a single case to BLOs during the first 24 hours."
The EC said it had already received 3,223 applications for fresh enrolment by first-time voters and was running awareness campaigns. Special camps will be held daily at block and urban offices till Sept 1. Eligible voters are urged to verify their names and submit photographs for new voter cards.

Police examine videos after BJP councillors booked for altercation with Ludhiana mayor

Ludhiana: Police in the city are reviewing video footage following a heated altercation at the Zone-D office of mayor Inderjit Kaur that resulted in charges against two BJP councillors, the husbands of three women councillors, and more than 20 others. The incident unfolded recently, when BJP members of the house arrived at the municipal corporation office seeking a meeting with the mayor. Tensions escalated, leading to what police describe as intimidation and physical confrontation. A complaint filed by assistant sub-inspector Sudagar Singh, who serves as the mayor's security officer, suggests that the situation became hostile after several people entered the office claiming to be councillors. Mayor Kaur alleged that not all present were elected. As discussions grew heated, three men — Kulwant Singh Kanti, Vishal Gulati, and Jatinder Goryan, all spouses of sitting councillors — allegedly argued with and threatened the mayor, restraining her from leaving the office. Councillors Mukesh Khatri and Gauravjit Singh Gora were also accused of aggressive behaviour and reportedly attempted to assault the mayor before allegedly manhandling the ASI. Following the ASI's intervention, the group reportedly continued with abusive language before leaving the premises. Division Number 5 police have filed an FIR against councillors Gauravjit Singh Gora (Ward 80), Mukesh Khatri (Ward 76), Kulwant Singh Kanti (spouse of Kuldeep Kaur, Ward 33), Vishal Gulati (spouse of Ruchi Gulati, Ward 73), Jatinder Goryan (spouse of Ruby, Ward 17), and 20 unidentified individuals under charges of obstructing a public servant, assault, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Police say all relevant video evidence is under review and no further arrests or action will be taken until they have examined the footage thoroughly. The BJP members of the MC house, meanwhile, have maintained a sit-in protest outside the mayor's office since Friday night, demanding an apology from mayor Inderjit Kaur over alleged misbehaviour. A senior police official said the investigation was in progress and any further steps will depend on what the video evidence reveals. Dharmasthala case: SIT urged to deploy GPR at locations identified by witness

Mangaluru: Advocate Manjunath N, legal counsel for Sujatha Bhat, mother of Ananya Bhat, a medical student who allegedly disappeared while she was in Dharmasthala in 2003, has requested the use of advanced Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) at locations already identified by the complainant witness. These locations have been excavated in connection with the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case. "It is learnt that skeletal remains were uncovered at some of the locations identified by the complainant witness. He said he left Dharmasthala in 2014. The region experiences heavy rainfall, leading to a high possibility of soil shifting and accumulation from one place to another," the advocate said in a release. "Since considerable changes have occurred in the forest area over approximately 11 years, there is a high probability that the landmarks the witness identified from memory may have changed or shifted. Therefore, as we previously petitioned on July 29, we request that GPR units, which are comparable in size to machines used for clearing grass and weeds and can be operated by a small team, be deployed to detect skeletal remains at the already excavated locations and in the surrounding areas," he stated. "Many experts anticipate that the SIT, led by Pronab Mohanty, will implement GPR technology. We have faith and confidence that the Karnataka govt and chief minister Siddaramaiah will support the SIT in deploying GPRs," the advocate added. The SIT began its field investigation into the case on July 28 by mapping 13 alleged burial sites, based on the testimony of the complainant witness, and started searching the area from the next day. Till Saturday, the SIT, in the presence of Puttur assistant commissioner Stella Varghese, searched around 10 locations. Security personnel have been deployed in the area. Demand for transparent investigation The Mangaluru unit of All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has demanded an impartial, transparent, and time-bound investigation into the matter by the SIT. "These are not isolated crimes but raise serious questions about the functioning of the law enforcement system," said Vinay Chandra, convenor, AIDSO Mangaluru unit. Dharmasthala is a place founded on truth: Scholar "Attempts are being made by mischief-makers to malign the sanctity of Dharmasthala by spreading baseless allegations and misinformation. These unauthorised accusations have deeply hurt countless devotees," said Daivajna Somayaji, a senior scholar. During his visit to Dharmasthala on Sunday, he told reporters, "Dharmasthala is a sacred place rooted in truth, dharma, justice, and ethics." Improve maritime connectivity of Dweep, MP urges Union min

Kochi: In a bid to improve the maritime connectivity of Lakshadweep, the MP from the UT, M Hamdullah Sayeed, has made a written submission to Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. Sayeed stated in his letter that the current fleet operated by the Lakshadweep administration for passenger movement was not only ageing but woefully inadequate to meet the growing inter-island and mainland demands. "The last vessel was inducted nearly a decade ago. This has resulted in frequent disruptions, delays and reduced service reliability, severely affecting residents, students, traders, and public institutions," he said. He urged the ministry to consider the acquisition of two new passenger vessels with a minimum capacity of 400 passengers and 300 MT cargo space. He also demanded the procurement of two dedicated cargo vessels of 600 MT capacity to support essential goods and commerce. Deployment of a dedicated oil tanker for fuel and LPG transport, as the sole existing vessel has proven insufficient, is another demand. He stressed in the letter that the sustenance, economic vitality and public service delivery in Lakshadweep are fundamentally dependent on uninterrupted and affordable sea transport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Sayeed also referred to the fare policy affecting children. "Presently, children above the age of one are charged full fare despite occupying no separate berths or seats. This has placed an unfair burden on families who travel frequently for healthcare, education, and other essential services. In contrast, Indian Railways exempts children under five from fare, and the civil aviation sector provides discounted or nominal infant fares. In light of these national standards, I respectfully urge the ministry to rationalise the fare structure by allowing children under five years to travel either free of cost or at a nominal token fare when accompanied by a parent or guardian," the letter added. He also registered strong objection to the fare revision which came into effect from July 1, terming it steep and abrupt. "This unilateral increase, implemented without stakeholder consultation or prior public notice, has triggered widespread concern and unrest among the island population," he said, urging the ministry to immediately reconsider and withdraw the revised fare structure.
