Police examine videos after BJP councillors booked for altercation with Ludhiana mayor
The incident unfolded recently, when BJP members of the house arrived at the municipal corporation office seeking a meeting with the mayor. Tensions escalated, leading to what police describe as intimidation and physical confrontation. A complaint filed by assistant sub-inspector Sudagar Singh, who serves as the mayor's security officer, suggests that the situation became hostile after several people entered the office claiming to be councillors.
Mayor Kaur alleged that not all present were elected.
As discussions grew heated, three men — Kulwant Singh Kanti, Vishal Gulati, and Jatinder Goryan, all spouses of sitting councillors — allegedly argued with and threatened the mayor, restraining her from leaving the office. Councillors Mukesh Khatri and Gauravjit Singh Gora were also accused of aggressive behaviour and reportedly attempted to assault the mayor before allegedly manhandling the ASI.
Following the ASI's intervention, the group reportedly continued with abusive language before leaving the premises. Division Number 5 police have filed an FIR against councillors Gauravjit Singh Gora (Ward 80), Mukesh Khatri (Ward 76), Kulwant Singh Kanti (spouse of Kuldeep Kaur, Ward 33), Vishal Gulati (spouse of Ruchi Gulati, Ward 73), Jatinder Goryan (spouse of Ruby, Ward 17), and 20 unidentified individuals under charges of obstructing a public servant, assault, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation.
Police say all relevant video evidence is under review and no further arrests or action will be taken until they have examined the footage thoroughly. The BJP members of the MC house, meanwhile, have maintained a sit-in protest outside the mayor's office since Friday night, demanding an apology from mayor Inderjit Kaur over alleged misbehaviour. A senior police official said the investigation was in progress and any further steps will depend on what the video evidence reveals.

CRPF officer blames police for inaction on burglary complaint
: A CRPF personnel, currently posted in Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday blamed Ponnai police for still not arresting the suspects who burgled her house near Katpadi here in June 2025. In a video, which was shared by BJP leader K. Annamalai on his X handle, the CRPF personnel, who identified herself as Kalavathi from Narayanapuram village near Katpadi, said that on June 24, as part of their routine, her parents took their cattle for grazing around 3.30 p.m. On returning home around 5.30 p.m., the couple found the main door broken. Valuables, including 22.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery, ₹50,000, and silk sarees, were found to be missing. 'My father informed the local police, but they delayed registration of complaint, citing bandobast duty for the Chief Minister's visit to the district the following day. We got the FIR copy only on June 28. So far, no progress has been made in the case,' she alleged in the video. Police sources said Kalavathi's father, Kumarasamy, 65, lived with his wife and son. According to the police, a case was registered at 7.30 p.m. on June 25, and not as mentioned in the video (around 12.30 p.m. on June 26). An FIR copy was issued on the same day to K. Dasarathan, 32, Kumarasamy's son. 'The case is in the final stages of investigation. The suspects will be arrested soon,' A. Myilvaganan, SP (Vellore), told The Hindu. Police sources said a preliminary investigation was done on the same day as the complaint was filed by Kumarasamy. Two police personnel attached to Ponnai police inspected the crime spot. Fingerprints of six suspects were taken as part of the inquiry. The Call Detail Record of nine suspects, including those mentioned by the victim, are also being analysed. 'Around 80% of the investigation is done. Suspects will be held soon,' police sources said.

Congress to observe Aug 5 as 'black day', demand J-K statehood restoration
The Congress will observe August 5 as a "black day" against the downgrading of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a Union territory six years ago and will sit on a dharna to press for the restoration of statehood. On August 5, 2019, the Centre scrapped J&K's special status and bifurcated the state into two Union territories. The Congress is backed by the other members of the All Parties United Morcha, which was created with the aim of restoring statehood, for the protest on Wednesday. "The Congress party shall observe August 5 as a black day against the downgrading of the historical J&K state into a Union territory. All constituent members are fully supporting it together," chief spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, Ravinder Sharma, told reporters here. He said that a peaceful sit-in will be organised by the Congress supported by All Parties United Morcha near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh at Tawi bridge in Jammu to press for the early restoration of full statehood to J-K. Sharma appealed to all people and organisations of Jammu to support the dharna in a bid to force the BJP-led central government to grant statehood to J-K. "The Government of India should bring a bill in this session of Parliament, pass the bill, and restore statehood. This is the demand of all of us," he said. Blaming New Delhi for running the region with a "remote control", he said that the denial of statehood was weakening the democratic setup, and people are witnessing the "treatment" by the elected chief minister and the lieutenant governor's administration. The government had promised the people of Jammu and Kashmir the restoration of statehood, and they should fulfil it, the Congress leader said. The Supreme Court has also called for the restoration of statehood, he said, adding that the BJP and its government in New Delhi are "deceiving" people here. All district units of the Congress will also organise similar dharnas at their respective district headquarters and observe "black day" on Wednesday as part of "Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq", he said.

Cong workers protest outside Delhi Assembly over slum evictions
New Delhi: Thousands of Congress workers, led by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav, protested outside the Delhi Assembly on the first day of the monsoon session against the demolition of over 3,000 JJ clusters that displaced nearly 15,000 families. Recently, a series of demolition drives in areas like Wazirpur, Jailorwala Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Jangpura triggered strong reactions from the opposition. Yadav alleged the evictions were carried out by the BJP govt without prior notice or rehabilitation. "To protect the rights of slum dwellers, Congress workers will brave every challenge boldly and not be afraid of the dictatorial police of the BJP," Yadav said. Congress workers carrying placards clashed with police and paramilitary forces. Yadav was detained and taken to Sabzi Mandi Police Station. He pointed out that during its tenure, the Congress built in-situ flats in areas such as Bhoomiheen Camp, Jailorwala Bagh, and Katputli Colony. He said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the displaced families and raised the issue in Parliament, following which the Delhi govt announced a halt to demolitions. Chief minister Rekha Gupta had earlier stated that the current govt has allotted Rs 700 crore for the development of slum areas under the 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan' scheme.
