Police examine videos after BJP councillors booked for altercation with Ludhiana mayor

Ludhiana: Police in the city are reviewing video footage following a heated altercation at the Zone-D office of mayor Inderjit Kaur that resulted in charges against two BJP councillors, the husbands of three women councillors, and more than 20 others. The incident unfolded recently, when BJP members of the house arrived at the municipal corporation office seeking a meeting with the mayor. Tensions escalated, leading to what police describe as intimidation and physical confrontation. A complaint filed by assistant sub-inspector Sudagar Singh, who serves as the mayor's security officer, suggests that the situation became hostile after several people entered the office claiming to be councillors. Mayor Kaur alleged that not all present were elected. As discussions grew heated, three men — Kulwant Singh Kanti, Vishal Gulati, and Jatinder Goryan, all spouses of sitting councillors — allegedly argued with and threatened the mayor, restraining her from leaving the office. Councillors Mukesh Khatri and Gauravjit Singh Gora were also accused of aggressive behaviour and reportedly attempted to assault the mayor before allegedly manhandling the ASI. Following the ASI's intervention, the group reportedly continued with abusive language before leaving the premises. Division Number 5 police have filed an FIR against councillors Gauravjit Singh Gora (Ward 80), Mukesh Khatri (Ward 76), Kulwant Singh Kanti (spouse of Kuldeep Kaur, Ward 33), Vishal Gulati (spouse of Ruchi Gulati, Ward 73), Jatinder Goryan (spouse of Ruby, Ward 17), and 20 unidentified individuals under charges of obstructing a public servant, assault, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Police say all relevant video evidence is under review and no further arrests or action will be taken until they have examined the footage thoroughly. The BJP members of the MC house, meanwhile, have maintained a sit-in protest outside the mayor's office since Friday night, demanding an apology from mayor Inderjit Kaur over alleged misbehaviour. A senior police official said the investigation was in progress and any further steps will depend on what the video evidence reveals. Ludhiana: Pvt bus staff booked for murder bid after attack on passengers

The Division Number 5 police have registered a case against the driver and staff of private travel company Arman Travels after they allegedly attempted to kill a passenger from Jammu and his family members following an altercation. The incident occurred on April 30 near the Dhyan Singh Complex, close to the Amar Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Inter State Bus Terminal in Ludhiana. The victim, Chamail Singh, a resident of Thakrakote in Reasi district, Jammu, was travelling with around 20 family members from Delhi to Jammu. The bus, operated by Arman Travels, was expected to reach Jammu by 10pm. However, around 9pm, the driver abruptly stopped the bus in Ludhiana and asked the passengers to disembark, assuring them that a replacement bus would be arranged. Initially, the family members agreed to disembark, trusting the driver's promise. However, after waiting for over an hour with no alternative transport arranged, tensions rose as passengers questioned the driver. According to assistant sub-inspector Kashmir Singh, who is investigating the case, the disagreement escalated rapidly, leading the driver and other staff members to violently attack the passengers. Chamail Singh sustained serious head injuries during the assault. Despite the severity of the attack, no complaint was filed in Ludhiana at the time as the family proceeded to their hometown. Later, Singh lodged a complaint with the Reasi police in Jammu, who registered an FIR and forwarded it as a zero FIR to Ludhiana police for further investigation. 'The FIR has been filed under Sections 109, 115(2), 118(1), 191(3), 310(2), 351 (2), 352 of the BNS and Section 25 of Arms Act against unidentified persons from Arman Travels. We are in the process of identifying and tracking down the accused. A hunt is on for their arrest,' said ASI Kashmir Singh.

Bomb disposal squads, dog units and law enforcement personnel quickly arrived and conducted a comprehensive sweep of the premises, including the DC office, regional transport office, education department, police complex, excise and taxation department, court complex and parking areas. Ludhiana: Cross FIRs registered after advocates, district court complex employees clash

Following the clash between advocates and court employees at the District Court Complex on Monday, the Division Number 5 police have registered cross FIRs against both groups involved late Tuesday night. Based on a complaint filed by advocate Narinder Singh, the police have booked court employees Gurdeep, Navdeep, Akash, Maan Singh, Ravi Kumar, Harwinder Singh alias Tinku, along with at least five unidentified individuals. They have been booked under Sections 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 299 (deliberate act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Meanwhile, in a counter complaint, Sukhwinder Singh, an assistant record keeper at the court complex, accused a group of advocates, including Narinder Singh, Rohit Kumar, Rohit Thapar, Amandeep Singh, Harjinder Singh, Mohammad Intzaar, Varun Gupta, Sunny Sharma, Shubham Agarwal, Amit Kumar, and several unidentified accomplices of assault and property damage. They have been booked under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 132 (assault on public servant), 221 (obstructing public functions), 351(2)(3), 324(4) (causing damage exceeding ₹20,000), 191 (rioting) of BNS, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Advocate Narinder Singh claimed the conflict began when his colleague Rohit lost his wallet. Gurdeep, a court employee, reportedly informed Rohit that he had found it. When Rohit retrieved the wallet, he alleged that ₹8,000 in cash was missing. Upon questioning Gurdeep, an argument ensued, which escalated into a physical altercation. Narinder further alleged that the court staff, including Gurdeep, confined and assaulted them and even tossed his turban—an act that hurt religious sentiments. In contrast, Sukhwinder Singh stated that it was the advocates who first abused and attacked Gurdeep. He said that the employees tried to defuse the situation but were assaulted instead. Fearing further violence, they locked themselves in a room, but the advocates allegedly shattered a glass window using a brick and damaged government property. Sukhwinder also emphasised that the incident occurred during working hours, accusing the lawyers of obstructing public servants from performing their duties. ASI Subhash Chand, who is investigating the case, stated that further investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and assign accountability.

Ludhiana: A professional international shooter and a local driver have been charged with submitting forged dope test reports to obtain firearm licences, in a case that has raised concerns over gaps in Punjab's arms licensing on Tuesday filed two FIRs (first-information reports) based on complaints from assistant commissioner of police (licensing) Rajesh Sharma, who flagged discrepancies in the drug test documents submitted by the applicants. The accused are Gurnihal Singh Garcha, a celebrated shooter from Model Town with international medals to his name, and Lalit Kumar, a driver-cum-security guard from Sahnewal Kalan's Suneyara Wala Sharma claimed that Lalit Kumar had submitted a dope test report purportedly from Ludhiana's civil hospital. "On examining the document, I found the stamps suspicious. When questioned, Lalit Kumar claimed to have taken only two tests, even though the official protocol requires six or seven. That was enough to suspect forgery," Sharma said. Authorities, later, confirmed through the hospital that Lalit Kumar had never undergone testing, and the report he had submitted, complete with fake stamps and signatures, was a similar case, shooter Gurnihal Garcha — who clinched the silver medal in 2019's Doha Asian Championship and the bronze medal at Changwon's World Championship — submitted a forged dope report while applying for licence renewal. The civil hospital confirmed that the doctor listed on the document was on leave on the date of the supposed to the controversy, police said Garcha had been booked in 2020 previously after allegedly firing in the air to threaten his mother during a family dispute over setting up a fish farm. Even though his father, later, withdrew the complaint, the incident was recorded in police files. Both men — the shooter and the guard — have been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including cheating, forgery, and using counterfeit documents, with FIRs registered at Division Number 5 police investigation was in progress to identify those involved in producing the fake documents and stamps. This is not the first time authorities have uncovered such forgeries.
