Record crowd expected at Bristol for the MLB Speedway Classic between the Braves and Reds
'We can't wait for next Saturday night ... when that first pitch is thrown out and the stands are full,' Jerry Caldwell, Bristol's president and general manager, said Friday. 'We'll be setting records, we'll be having attendance records. We'll announcing all those details later on, but we'll be there, I know we will.'
The largest crowd ever to see a baseball game was 115,300 for a March 2008 exhibition between the Red Sox and Dodgers at Los Angeles Coliseum. Bristol packed in 156,990 for the
Battle of Bristol college football game
in 2016.
Officials showed off the work Friday with a baseball field now sitting on top of the infield inside the half-mile bullring where cars and a building once sat for
NASCAR
races.
Murray Cook, an MLB field and stadium consultant with BrightView, said he's excited to be at this point in the process of building a ballpark. Final touches still remain for the clay along with all the padding and branding, which should be in place by Wednesday at the latest.
Crews also held a light check Thursday night to make sure the Musco lights meet MLB standards.
'We've had a blast building this,' Cook said.
Even though the Braves play the Reds in Cincinnati on Aug. 1, the day before the Bristol game, fans are being encouraged to settle in for the big party planned both outside and then inside the racetrack for game day.
Caldwell said fans should show up by noon on game day to enjoy the attractions outside the track, including music, a 110-foot Ferris wheel, a food truck row, pitching tunnels and batting cages and team mascots. Once fans head inside,
Tim McGraw
and
Pitbull
are scheduled to perform.
Demolition started in early June with
heavy construction
now in high gear to transform Bristol Motor Speedway into a ballpark for the first
MLB game in Tennessee
.
This game features grandstand seating for fans along both baselines. Both teams will be wearing
NASCAR-inspired uniforms
with details like flames on the brim of the Braves' caps and a finish-line checkerboard for the Reds' caps.
The MLB Speedway Classic also will be included in the
'MLB The Show 25' video game
after an update scheduled for Tuesday.
Caldwell said the project has been long in the works.
'We're ... thrilled to be able to welcome everyone to Bristol and partner with Major League Baseball, the state of Tennessee and so many others to be able to pull this off,' he said.

There, pinch hitter Joc Pederson sent it to extras. Dodgers let strong start from Tyler Glasnow go to waste in loss to Cardinals
The Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow and the Cardinals' Sonny Gray squared off in an old-school pitchers' duel Monday. But both were watching from the clubhouse when pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo's two-out single in the ninth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. Glasnow gave the Dodgers seven strong innings for the second time in three starts, allowing a run on three hits — none after the second inning — while striking out seven. Gray was even better in his seven innings, giving up just a fourth-inning solo home run to Freddie Freeman and a second-inning walk to Max Muncy. Three Dodger stars who need to heat up at the plate The Dodgers' bullpen gave up more runs over a span of nine batters than Glasnow did all night. Anthony Banda went first, allowing a go-ahead homer to Iván Herrera three batters into the eighth inning. Newcomer Brock Stewart started the ninth for the Dodgers, but he didn't finish it. Blue Jays cut losses on $10.5 million pitcher
The Toronto Blue Jays released a veteran pitcher who didn't quite maintain his form this season. Chad Green is no longer with the organization, the Blue Jays announced on Monday. Green was under a $10.5 million contract that was his last year with Toronto, but the Blue Jays chose not to ride that deal out. They designated him for assignment, and when he cleared waivers as expected, he was released. After beginning his career with seven seasons with the Yankees (3.17 ERA), Green seemed like a smart pickup for the Blue Jays in 2023. He was injured most of that season, though, only appearing in 12 games. And in those outings, he had a 5.25 ERA. MORE: Cubs' Matthew Boyd has mastered the balk pickoff move Green was back to form in 2024. He had a 3.21 ERA in 53 outings. In 53.1 innings pitched, Green struck out 46 hitters. That presented optimism about what Green would bring this season. Instead, his ERA was at 5.56 through 45 outings at the time of his release. Green had still struck out 35 batters in 43.2 innings, and his walk rate was similar, but he was giving up hits and home runs both at the worst rate of his career. At 34 years old, it's very possible that Green has simply moved well past his prime. His long pedigree of big league success aligns perfectly with a market where every contender is always looking for an extra relief pitcher. A team that feels it didn't quite get enough bullpen help at the trade deadline can turn to Green and see if he still has a little bit left in the tank. Toronto clearly deemed that he didn't, and that's why Green became a free agent on Monday, but that status may not last for very long. The Blue Jays will just have to hope he doesn't sign with a team that can hurt their own chances going forward.
