NFL analyst lays out worst-case scenario for Falcons in 2025
The Atlanta Falcons ended the 2024 season on a bittersweet note. While it was encouraging to see Michael Penix Jr. play well in his first few starts, it felt like the team missed a chance to finally get back into the playoffs.
After a painfully long offseason, the Falcons are close to taking the field for their second official training camp of the Raheem Morris era. With 10 of 11 offensive starters set to return, the team should rely heavily on its offense in 2025.
The Falcons defense has a lot to prove, though. Fans are rightfully excited about first-round picks Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr., but there should be an adjustment period with so many new faces and Jeff Ulbrich taking over as defensive coordinator.
Obviously, Atlanta wants to return to the postseason, but what is the team's worst-case scenario in 2025? PFSN Analyst Jacob Infante looked attempted to project the floor of each NFL team. The Falcons' worst-case scenario record for the 2025 season was 6-11:
Michael Penix Jr. takes the reins as quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons after Kirk Cousins followed up a 6-3 start by going 1-4 in the final five games before he got benched. That collapse can be attributed to poor quarterback play, but it's also a team game at the end of the day. -- Jacob Infante, PFSN
While a six-win season would certainly be a disappointment, Atlanta's projected floor is higher than two of three NFC South rivals. The Carolina Panthers' worst-case scenario was 4-13, while the New Orleans Saints had the lowest projected floor at 2-15.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the top-ranked team in the division with a worst-case projection of 7-10. The Falcons clearly have more question marks than the Buccaneers, but they seem to be miles ahead of the Saints.
Even in tightly contested division like the NFC South, the Falcons are facing a decent amount of pressure to finally take that next step in 2025. Players officially report for training camp on July 23, with the team's first practice coming on July 24.

Falcons rookie in spotlight after back-to-back scuffles as pre-draft red flags resurface
The Atlanta Falcons were enthusiastic about how the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft unfolded. However, they made a bold move by trading up for James Pearce Jr., a player with notable character concerns heading into the draft. The decision drew heavy criticism, particularly regarding what the team gave up to acquire him. 'This isn't about the player; it's about the price the Falcons paid to move up for him. Atlanta needed edge rush help and already got some earlier in the round with Jalon Walker. Trading next year's first-round pick to get Pearce felt like a massive overpay,' ESPN's Dan Graziano said. Pearce was a dominant force in college, routinely disrupting opposing offenses. Still, his off-field issues led to a slight draft slide. Former Tennessee Vols writer Wes Rucker called him one of the steals of the draft. 'There aren't 25 players better than James Pearce Jr. in this draft. If he grows up and behaves like a professional, that's a steal of a pick. But he'll have to grow up in Atlanta. So ... we'll see,' Rucker posted. However, after the third day of training camp on Sunday, those character concerns resurfaced. Pearce was involved in two scuffles during practice. 'Rookie James Pearce Jr. was the main character today. He set off two scrums on back-to-back plays — the first going at it with Ryan Neuzil and Matthew Bergeron (who had some words), and the second with Kaleb McGary,' wrote Adnan Ikic of The Falcoholic. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp During media availability, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich commented on the defense's intensity that day — a remark that may have been indirectly aimed at Pearce. 'We're trying to develop a culture. And part of that is the violence. Today, it went a little too far,' Ulbrich said. There's no denying Pearce's immense talent, but as a rookie, he can't afford to get into repeated altercations with teammates. One incident can be brushed off; three separate conflicts raise red flags. Pearce is clearly trying to earn playing time, but there are better ways to prove himself than through on-field fights.

Bijan Robinson is preparing for another busy season as Falcons' do-it-all running back
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga (AP) — Michael Penix Jr. enters his first full season as Atlanta's starting quarterback with the good fortune of knowing Bijan Robinson has been both productive and durable as the focus of the Falcons' offense at running back. Robinson was a do-it-all back for Atlanta in 2024, his second pro season. He ranked third in the league with 1,456 yards rushing and third among all running backs with 61 catches. He tied for fifth with 14 rushing touchdowns and was fourth with 304 carries. While Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley was voted the NFL's top running back by The Associated Press entering the season, Robinson was included in the top five. Now, after Penix made only three starts as a rookie to close last season, the Falcons can be expected to take advantage again of their strong running game with Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. 'You have to get him the rock,' Penix said at the start of training camp. "It's simple as that. It doesn't matter how we do it. Somehow, some way he's got to have the rock.' Robinson said he learned more about preparing for another busy season by working out with San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey in California this offseason. 'It was great,' Robinson said. 'Me and him just giving each other so many tips and feeding off knowledge from each other on the field. … We worked together the whole month. I got to see how he worked. He got to see how I worked. It was really cool two guys coming together trying to make each other better. He taught me some nuance moves on the field and I did the same for him.' The challenge for coach Raheem Morris is to make the most of Robinson's production while not overextending his workload. 'You definitely want to protect that kind of unique athlete,' Morris said, adding that Robinson 'doesn't need a governor' as an artificial cap on his number of carries. 'He's certainly one of those guys that can carry the load,' Morris said. 'Certainly one of the guys that has carried the load for us. And you could definitely do that. But we just happen to have some really good backs, you know? ... We have a luxury of having a guy like Tyler on our team.' Allgeier rushed for 1,035 yards as a rookie in 2022 and averaged 4.7 yards per carry while rushing for 644 yards on a career-low 137 carries last season. There is an emphasis on creating opportunities to use Allgeier more this season. 'We've got to find ways to get Tyler on the field, to find ways to feature him on the field,' Morris said. It wouldn't be a surprise to see more two-running back sets, perhaps with defenses having to monitor Robinson put in motion as a receiver while Allgeier remains lined up behind Penix. Kudos for Cousins General manager Terry Fontenot said Sunday that Kirk Cousins has been 'the ultimate professional' after losing his starting job to Penix last season and returning as a backup, despite speculation the veteran could be traded. 'Outside, it's a lot more of a big deal than it is in the building,' Fontenot said of the questions about Cousins' status. 'He shows up. He does his job just like anybody. ... He's been a great professional. He's handled himself well." Tip from Stick Fontenot said backup quarterback Easton Stick, who worked out with wide receiver D.J. Chark in the offseason after the two were Los Angeles Chargers teammates last season, passed along a recommendation that the Falcons look at signing the veteran. Chark worked out at the Falcons' facility on Friday and signed in time to have his first practice on Saturday. The timing was convenient, as starter Darnell Mooney is expected to miss several weeks with a shoulder injury. ___ AP NFL:
