Anwar: Malaysia to continue supporting digital, AI development in Asean
PUTRAJAYA: The government will continue supporting the development of digitalisation and artificial intelligence across Asean to position the region as a competitive and forward-looking digital hub.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia's digital push was not solely for domestic growth, but also aimed at building a strong, integrated regional ecosystem that benefits all Asean member states.
"(Malaysia) will also continue to support the development of digitalisation and AI in our neighbouring countries, because we want Asean, not just Malaysia, to become a more competitive digital hub," he said.
Anwar said this in his keynote address at the launch of MaiStorage Techology here today.
While highlighting Malaysia's progress and reputation as a stable and policy-driven tech destination, Anwar said digital transformation must be a collective Asean effort if the region is to remain competitive on the global stage.
He cited Malaysia's collaboration with Vietnam and Singapore under the Asean Power Grid initiative as an example of how the region could work together on cross-border infrastructure projects, including those related to energy and digital connectivity.
"The thrust of our Asean chairmanship has been energy transition, and we have seen some success through collaboration among Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore on the power grid.
"But, more importantly, the focus of our chairmanship is digital transformation. This is not just about platitudes or pronouncements, it is something we can be genuinely excited about.
"Our neighbouring countries can share in and support this venture, just as we will continue to support digitalisation and AI development in the region."
Anwar added that policy clarity and governance reform in Malaysia have created an enabling environment for technology and AI development.
He credited the New Industrial Master Plan and other national strategies for providing clear direction and certainty for investors and innovators.
"That said, the real challenge lies in effective execution, which is a common struggle for many countries including ours.
"That is why when I began this journey with my team, we focused first on governance. Unless we establish sound governance, we cannot ensure business discipline, policy clarity and efficient, transparent execution.
"If we do that, we can showcase Malaysia not only as a centre for AI development but also as a high-end innovation hub that adds real value to the industry."

Tengku Zafrul, whose senatorship expires at the end of the year, had said he would leave it to Anwar to decide on his Cabinet post.

Esteel project delayed by licence approvals, says Sabah minister

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah's industrial development minister, Phoong Jin Zhe, has sought to explain the delay in a RM31 billion steel investment project, saying this was caused by setbacks in securing the relevant approvals and natural gas supply. He said the initial projection to have Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd's factory begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year was based on the assumption that the approvals could be obtained without delay. However, he said, 'some obstructions' surfaced with Putrajaya's implementation of a two-year moratorium on approving manufacturing licences for steel-related industries. Phoong said this was acknowledged by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim when he launched the project, which was first announced in November 2022, at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip). 'The special approval was only obtained on Jan 24, 2025, which affected the project's original timeframe,' he said in a statement today. Phoong said technical assessments and negotiations with various stakeholders for the supply of natural gas to the factory had also pushed back the project's implementation. He was responding to Warisan's Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong, who had urged the state government to come clean about the delay in the Esteel investment. Chong said the land lease agreement between Sogip and Esteel, signed in November 2022, stated that the first phase of the project would begin in the fourth quarter of 2023 and was expected to be completed within two years. The former DAP man also questioned the authenticity of the investment, claiming it was hard to find information on Esteel online, and also raised questions on the increased investment amount from RM20 billion to RM31 billion. Phoong maintained that the company and its financial capacity were vetted by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, as required for the approval of its manufacturing licence. 'The latest amount of RM31 billion is a result of the company's latest review and calculation, which includes the construction of the plant, jetty and other related facilities. 'Value adjustments are common among phased development projects,' he said. The first phase of Esteel's investment in Sabah, estimated to be worth some RM6.4 billion, was officiated by Anwar at the Sabah International Convention Centre on May 30.

KPT to expand ‘Telaah' broadcast to foster reading interest, intellectual discussions
KUALA LUMPUR: 'Telaah', a discussion and analysis session of books and works through audio broadcasts, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) yesterday, will be expanded in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE). Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said he has discussed with the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, and the programme will be expanded to a wider audience, involving students, lecturers, teachers, and schoolchildren to foster a love for reading. ''Telaah' is an initiative borne by the Prime Minister, who is indeed known as a book lover and a leader with a scholarly spirit. In all his speeches, there will surely be quotes from prominent figures and important books that enliven discourse and enlighten the minds of the people. ''Telaah' is not just a programme, it is a movement to revive the interest in reading, the culture of book discussions, and intellectual discussions based on knowledge,' he said in a Facebook post today. The first episode of 'Telaah' last night featured the Prime Minister as a special guest, discussing four important works namely 'Kemiskinan Melayu dan Jalan Kepulihannya' by Za'ba, 'Jejak-Jejak di Pantai Zaman' (Prof Diraja Ungku Abdul Aziz), 'Islam dan Sejarah Kebudayaan Melayu' (Prof Diraja Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas), and 'Islam dan Melayu: Martabat Umat dan Daulat Rakyat' (Datuk Dr Siddiq Fadzil) from his personal library. To embrace the development of digital technology, Zambry said an online book review competition will also be held so that people from all corners of the country can participate.
