Japan takes first step toward new nuclear reactor post-Fukushima

The Sun4 days ago
TOKYO: A Japanese utility announced plans to conduct a geological survey for constructing the nation's first new nuclear reactor since the Fukushima disaster in 2011.
Kansai Electric President Nozomu Mori stated the survey will assess the feasibility of replacing the aging Mihama Nuclear Power Station, marking a significant shift in Japan's energy policy.
Following the 2011 tsunami and subsequent meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi, Japan shut down all nuclear reactors amid public safety concerns.
However, the government has since advocated for nuclear power as a key component in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Public opinion has gradually shifted, with many reactors now back in operation.
Mori emphasized Japan's limited natural resources, stating, 'It is important that nuclear power fulfils its role in the years to come.'
The project, delayed since 2011, remains in early stages, with no confirmed construction timeline.
Local reports estimate the new reactor could cost one trillion yen (\$6.8 billion) and take 20 years to become operational.
Kansai Electric previously halted plans to replace one of Mihama's three reactors post-Fukushima.
Two older reactors were retired in 2015, while the third continues operating despite nearing 50 years of service.
The push for nuclear energy aligns with Japan's growing electricity demands, particularly for AI and data centres. – AFP

UN tells Cambodia, Thailand to exercise maximum restraint amid rising border tensions

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency closed-door meeting on Friday to discuss the ongoing conflict between the two neighbours. The council is yet to issue any statement on the outcome of the highly anticipated meeting. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a July 24 statement, called on both warring parties to pursue peaceful dialogue to the long-running dispute, according to the UN website. 'Exercise maximum restraint and address any issues through dialogue and in a spirit of good neighbourliness, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the dispute,' said Guterres. Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote to the UN Security Council on Thursday, seeking the global body's support to resolve the conflict that flared up between Cambodian and Thai soldiers along the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear areas, after weeks of simmering tensions. According to the website, the Security Council held an urgent private meeting under the 'Threats to international peace and security' on Friday to discuss the Cambodia-Thailand border issues. Both countries have been engaged in a decades-long hostile dispute over the sovereignty of the 817-km non-demarcated areas along their borders, where several ancient temples are also located. At Friday's meeting, several council members acknowledged ASEAN's role in facilitating a dialogue to resolve the crisis, according to the UN website. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also the current ASEAN chair, presented a ceasefire proposal to both governments. – Bernama border dispute cambodia Thailand united nations

Ringgit Likely To Trade Within RM4.22-RM4.24 Vs Greenback Next Week Ahead Of Fed Decision

WORLD By Fatin Umairah Abdul Hamid KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- The ringgit is expected to hover between RM4.22 and RM4.24 next week as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is anticipated to maintain its policy rate, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said this outlook is tied to the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, scheduled for July 29–30, 2025. "Based on the interest rate futures market, the Fed is likely to keep the Federal Funds Rate steady at 4.50 per cent. Technical indicators suggest that the US dollar-ringgit exchange rate is currently in a neutral zone," he told Bernama. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes expects the ringgit to trade within a relatively narrow range of 4.2080–4.2280, with trade-related headlines and external sentiment continuing to drive short-term direction. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week better against the greenback, closing at 4.2195/2245 versus 4.2410/2455 previously. However, the local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8529/8565 from 2.8517/8549 and declined versus the euro to 4.9507/9566 from 4.9336/9388 at the end of last week. However, it gained against the British pound to 5.6786/6853 from 5.6999/7060 last Friday.
