While Wydad AC exited the FIFA Club World Cup this week, one name has resonated across the global football stage: Thembinkosi Lorch.

The South African maestro's electrifying performances for the Moroccan giants have captivated audiences, culminating in a spectacular goal against Italian powerhouse Juventus.
The world bears witness to Lorch magic
Lorch's undeniable impact, despite his team's early departure, has been witnessed around the globe.
Two men in particular who have watched him closely are South African musicians DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small.
The two have special interest in Lorch, having released the song 'Lorch' in 2019, which is a song that pays tribute to the footballer.
This week, Showmax Premier League caught up with the musicians to chat about Lorch's rise in the football world and how he has taken the international stage by storm.
Amapiano pioneers DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, better known as the Scorpion Kings, have reflected on the inspiration behind their chart-topping tribute 'Lorch' and the footballers current brilliance.
When asked about the reasoning behind the song 'Lorch' in 2019, DJ Maphorisa revealed, 'When we made Lorch, it was during a time when Thembinkosi was dominating South African football,' said Maphorisa.
'He was the player that everyone was talking about – whether you were a football fan or not, you knew about Lorch. His performance in the Soweto Derby where he scored against Kaizer Chiefs really stood out. But beyond just one game, it was the flair, the confidence, and the swagger he carried on the pitch. That energy is the same energy we wanted in the song – something that feels alive, exciting, and full of vibes.'
'He became an icon of excellence'
Kabza De Small added: 'Lorch has always had that thing. It's not just his skills – it's the way he is, how he carries himself, the way he represents the youth, the hustle. He became an icon of excellence and ambition for young South Africans. Just like in music, when someone shines that bright, we must celebrate it. That's why we did the song.'
The simplicity of the song's title, 'Lorch,' was a deliberate choice to amplify its impact. 'Yeah. Just the name Lorch alone carries the association. When you hear the song, whether you're at groove, in a taxi, or watching football, you immediately know the vibe. It was meant to be an anthem – a direct shoutout, something simple but powerful. One name, big meaning.'
Witnessing Lorch's dazzling displays at the FIFA Club World Cup has been a source of immense pride for the musicians. When asked if they ever envisioned him reaching such heights, Kabza confidently says yes.

'When someone has that much talent and dedication, it's only a matter of time before the world catches on. We always knew Lorch was special. He's showing the world what South Africa is made of, just like we are with our music.'
'His playground'
DJ Maphorisa was particularly impressed by Lorch's composure under pressure.
'Just like us on stage, the biggest platforms can either break you or bring out the best in you. Lorch looks fearless out there. It's like he's making the world his playground, and we love to see it.'
The global spotlight on Lorch has also brought a new dimension to their iconic track. 'It's unbelievable but great' says Kabza. 'The song has definitely taken on a new meaning. Back then, it was a celebration of his local greatness – now, we can celebrate that it's an anthem that follows him globally. It's like the soundtrack to his journey, and it makes us proud to have been part of telling his story from early on.'
Beyond football, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small hope their song continues to inspire young South Africans across all fields. 'That's always been the mission,' Maphorisa emphasised. Whether its football, music, fashion, or whatever your hustle – we want young people to know that if Lorch can do it, if The Scorpion Kings can do it, then you can too.
'Dream big, work hard, and stay true to yourself. The song is bigger than just football – it's about believing in yourself.'
Looking to the future, the Scorpion Kings have high hopes for Lorch's career. 'The sky is the limit for Lorch,' says Kabza. 'We'd love to see him continue breaking barriers in his journey. And definitely, we hope to see him shine in the national team jersey again.'

Norris leads McLaren one-two in second Austrian GP practice

Lando Norris led Formula One leader Oscar Piastri in a McLaren one-two in second practice for the Austrian Grand Prix on Friday after George Russell went fastest for Mercedes in the opening session. Norris had handed his car to Alex Dunne for an impressive F1 practice debut for the Irish rookie and Formula Two leader, but the Briton was right up to speed as soon as he got back behind the wheel. After Russell's best of 1:05.542 seconds in the early afternoon, Norris — 22 points behind Piastri in the title battle after 10 of 24 races — lapped in 1:04.580 with Piastri 0.157 slower. Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen, a five-time winner at his team's home circuit, was the only other driver under the five second mark with a 1:04.898. Russell, winner from pole position in Canada two weeks ago after the McLarens collided, was sixth in practice two with Lance Stroll a surprise fourth for Aston Martin and Charles Leclerc fifth for Ferrari. Verstappen was without regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase for the weekend due to personal reasons with Simon Rennie taking over. Dunne, given track time as part of team obligations to give rookie drivers F1 experience, was the talk of the first session when he lapped fourth fastest and only 0.069 slower than Piastri. Still only 19 and the first Irish driver in 22 years to take part in a grand prix weekend, he thanked the team over the radio as the chequered flag fell. 'A little boy's dream came true, and this is definitely the best day of my life,' he said. 'Thank you everyone for letting me do this, and thanks to Lando as well for trusting me with his car.' McLaren team boss Andrea Stella cautioned not to read too much into the time, however. 'Alex has been quite diligent and impressive, and then he also had the chance to show some speed and, no surprise, he is a fast driver,' said the Italian. 'I think we need to be a bit careful looking at the lap times, because his came later on in the stint when the fuel was down. But I think encouraging and impressive in terms of Alex himself, and also I think a good session for McLaren.' Austria has the shortest lap of the year in terms of time and all but 20th-placed Haas driver Oliver Bearman were within a second of Russell in the opening session. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was ninth and 10th respectively in the sessions as Ferrari made a difficult start to their preparations with mechanics working on both cars during practice one. Hamilton was also warned for impeding Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli. 'I didn't see Antonelli,' he said over the radio after the Italian went wide to avoid a collision. Leclerc sat out that session with Swedish reserve Dino Beganovic getting some track time and finishing 18th.

Wolff dismisses speculation of Verstappen joining Mercedes in 2026

George Russell is more likely to stay with Mercedes next year than Max Verstappen is to join, the Formula One team's boss Toto Wolff said on Friday while confirming his interest for the future. Russell indicated on Thursday that Mercedes were talking to Verstappen about a move from Red Bull and suggested that was why an extension to his own contract beyond this season was taking time, lthough he was confident for the future. 'There is no delay in George's contract negotiations,' Wolff told Sky Sports television at the Austrian Grand Prix, where Russell was fastest in first practice. 'It's pretty clear since a long time what our timings were and are, we've known each other for such a long time and so there is no such thing as a delay.' Wolff said it was a question of trying to understand what time framework Verstappen, a four-time world champion who is contracted to Red Bull until 2028, was operating under and what his plans were. 'And that could be long into the future,' he added. 'But that has no effect on us putting a signature on George's contract.' Russell said on Thursday it was normal Mercedes would want to talk to Verstappen. Asked if Russell, whose teammate is 18-year-old Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli, was more likely to be in the Mercedes than Verstappen next year, Wolff replied: 'Yes.' 'What we are trying to do in the team is to be transparent ... you can either choose to hold things under wraps or like we have done in the past 10-12 years is put it out there and say 'this is the situation',' said Wolff. 'There is no such thing as saying 'we are going to sign Max'. This is so far away that it is not realistic. With George, we talk about everything.' Speaking to reporters earlier, Wolff said everything was normal and going to plan with Russell's contract talks. He also did not rule out pairing Russell and Verstappen in future, despite their recent public feuding and on track clashes. 'I can imagine every line-up. I had Rosberg and Hamilton fighting for a world championship, so everything else afterwards is easy,' said the Austrian. 'There's pros and cons of having two drivers fighting each other hard. 'We've seen examples where that functioned and other examples where it didn't.'
