White Sox take series from Giants in Jonathan Cannon's return

Reutersa day ago

June 29 - Kyle Teel went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and the Chicago White Sox took the three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants with a 5-2 win on Sunday.
White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon, out since June 3 because of a back strain, gave up one run on three hits, walked three and struck out four in three innings in his return.
Justin Verlander was effective through six frames, with one run on five hits and two walks. He fanned three for the Giants, who have dropped five of six.
Down by one in the seventh inning, Chicago took advantage of Verlander's exit to take a 5-2 lead.
Mike Tauchman and Chase Meidroth each singled off reliever Erik Miller (4-1), with Austin Slater pinch-running for Tauchman. After the pair advanced on a groundout, the Giants swapped Miller for Ryan Walker, who walked Miguel Vargas to load the bases.
Teel's double scored Slater and Meidroth to make it 3-2. Then, with Lenyn Sosa at the plate, a balk by Walker allowed Vargas to come in for a 4-2 advantage, and Sosa singled to drive in Teel.
San Francisco threatened in the top of the eighth against reliever Tyler Gilbert (2-1) when they had the bases loaded with one out, but Heliot Ramos grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The visitors broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth off reliever Jordan Leasure. Rafael Devers and Wilmer Flores each walked, and Mike Yastrzemski singled to load the bases. Leasure gave up another walk to Willy Adames, pushing Devers in to make it 2-1.
The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Tauchman led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on Andrew Benintendi's sacrifice fly.
The Giants tied it in the second when Christian Koss scored on a double by Patrick Bailey.
San Francisco right-hander Carson Seymour made his major league debut in the eighth inning, giving up two hits in the frame.

Lionel Messi reveals biggest Club World Cup regret following Inter Miami's thrashing by PSG

Lionel Messi revealed Inter Miami's biggest regret at the Club World Cup following their thrashing by PSG on Sunday was the side's 10 minute collapse in their final group stage game against Palmeiras. Having progressed to the round of 16 after a second placed finish in the group stage, Messi faced former club and European champions PSG in what was a 4-0 annihilation of the American side, ending Inter Miami's hopes of becoming world champions. However, Messi has revealed that the loss had felt even more bitter amongst the squad following the late capitulation against Palmeiras in the final group stage game, which saw head coach Javier Mascherano's side throw away a 2-0 lead in the dying minutes. Asked for his thoughts on Inter Miami's performance at the Club World Cup after their loss to PSG, the Argentine and club captain Messi stated, 'We remain with the sentiment against Palmeiras that winning the game 2-0 and drawing we had to face PSG which was more complicated…Getting the draw in the final minutes left a sour taste'. Despite the best efforts of Messi and a world class finish from forward Luis Suarez, the Herons conceded twice in the last ten minutes of the game against the Brazilian team. Failure to secure the win against Palmeiras meant that Inter Miami were able to place only second in their group rather than topping it, resulting in an unfavourable draw - against one of tournament favourites and Champions league winners PSG - rather than an easier clash with Brazilian side Botafogo in the first knockout round. Spanish left back Jordi Alba, who played with Messi at Barcelona for nine years, shared the regrets of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner that Inter Miami's ultimately disappointing group stage performance had hindered the squad's hopes for success at the tournament. 'I'll say it openly, we were better than all three of our group rivals, in my opinion,' emphasized the defender following the defeat to PSG. 'Today, we were talking about a very great rival, and they really put you through their paces, but, well, things are what they are'. Despite qualifying for the knockouts being considered a success amongst those who follow Inter Miami, the feeling amongst the side and talisman Lionel Messi has undoubtedly been revealed as one marred by a sense of what-if in relation to their draw against Palmeiras. With another four years to wait before the next Club World Cup in 2029, 38-year-old and three-time Club World Cup winner Messi's regret from this game seems set to serve as a disappointing end to his club career on the world stage.

Teams reportedly expect Steelers to listen to T.J. Watt offers after Ramsey deal

June 30 - Is Steelers All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt available to trade suitors? That's the question multiple teams in the NFL are asking Monday, according to ESPN, after Pittsburgh pulled off a trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Watt, 30, has 108 career sacks as he enters the final year of a four-year, $112 million contract he signed in 2021. That contract averages $28 million per year, far less than the going rate for premium pass rushers. Division rival Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns reset the market in March with a $123.5 million guarantee on a contract he signed following a trade demand. His annual average salary of $40 million is the highest in the NFL for non-quarterbacks. When Watt skipped mandatory minicamp this month and voluntary offseason team activities in the spring, he did not indicate whether he wants to hit the top of the market or surpass Garrett's compensation package. The Steelers are not expected to shop Watt. But ESPN reported teams are more likely to check in with Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan following the acquisition of Ramsey because the Steelers picked up $19.6 million of his $26.6 million salary for 2025. Watt is a four-time All-Pro and has spent his eight-year career with the Steelers since entering the NFL as a first-round pick in 2017. He has six seasons with at least 11.5 sacks -- his total last season -- and has forced 33 fumbles in his career. That's the most in the NFL over the last eight years, eight more than the Los Angeles Chargers' Khalil Mack. Garrett shares third with 20. --Field Level Media

Phillies' Bryce Harper returns from 10-day injured list

June 30 - Eight-time All-Star Bryce Harper was reinstated to the Philadelphia Phillies' active roster on Monday after missing the last 22 games with right wrist inflammation. During Harper's stint on the 10-day injured list that began June 6, the Phillies posted a 12-10 record yet gained three games on the New York Mets to take a 1.5-game lead in the National League East. Harper was penciled into the initial Phillies' lineup at first base, batting third between Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm, against the San Diego Padres. The 32-year-old Harper has posted a .258/.368/.446 slash line this season with nine homers, eight stolen bases and 34 RBIs in 57 games. His .814 OPS ties for the second-lowest percentage of his 14-year career. To make room for Harper the Phillies designated infielder Buddy Kennedy for assignment. Kennedy went 0-for-7 with a walk in four appearances. --Field Level Media
