Bayer Leverkusen's new coach Erik ten Hag was unflustered by his side losing 5-1 to Flamengo's under-20 team during their pre-season tour of Brazil on Friday.
'We haven't played together in this constellation,' he told reporters. 'I really don't give a shit about pre-season results.' He emphasized that what mattered to him was 'what I saw.'
In the final stages of the match, he said there was 'a very good approach.' The Dutchman has replaced Xabi Alonso, who left to coach Real Madrid after winning the Bundesliga in 2024 and finishing second to Bayern Munich last term.
Ten Hag is back in football for the first time since a forgettable spell at Manchester United and the English press were on his back again after the defeat in Rio de Janeiro.
Ten Hag told the Bild newspaper on Saturday that he hopes Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka stays at the club amid interest from Saudi Pro League club Neom SC.
The fact the 32-year-old flew to Brazil is a good sign for the new coach.
'Granit should stay,' he said. 'We are rebuilding, a new team is emerging ... but if it was up to me, he would stay.' Leverkusen utility player Robert Andrich was not as sanguine as his coach about the loss in Brazil.
'I don't want to sound too dramatic, but this was a bit of a catastrophe,' he told Bild.
Leverkusen, who have lost star players Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool, started with only Jonas Hofmann, Victor Boniface, Amine Adli and Arthur as first teamers.
Ten Hag changed almost the entire team at half-time and Patrik Schick, Alejandro Grimaldo, Xhaka and Andrich entered the fray.
Leverkusen stay in their training camp in Brazil until Wednesday and then have friendlies back in Europe against Pisa and Chelsea.
They return to the competitive action in the new season with a German Cup first-round clash at fourth-tier SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach on August 15.
Leverkusen host Hoffenheim in their Bundesliga opener on August 23.

Dogged England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to retain women's Euro title

dpa Basel, Switzerland Chloe Kelly scored the winning kick yet again as England fought back for a third straight game to retain the women's European football Championship with a penalty shoot-out victory over world champions Spain. Kelly scored the crucial spot-kick on Sunday as the Lionesses prevailed 3-1 in the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw. She also netted the winning goal in the Euro final three years ago against Germany. 'I am so proud of this team. So grateful to wear this badge. So proud to be English,' Kelly told the BBC, having also scored the extra-time winner over Italy in the semi, albeit on the rebound after her penalty was saved. 'I was cool, I was composed. I knew I was going to hit the back of the net. I don't miss penalties twice,' she smiled. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two Spanish penalties in Basel, including from world player of the year and of the tournament Aitana Bonmatí. 'We have got English blood in us, we never say die,' the keeper said. In a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final in Sydney won 1-0 by the Spanish, La Roja again dominated possession but England would not let go of their trophy as they became the first England side across the sexes to win a major tournament abroad. The last team to defend a women's Euro crown was Germany in 2013. England coach Sarina Wiegman, a former Netherlands boss, was already the first coach to reach five major tournament finals in a row. She is now the first to win three straight Euros after the Lionesses came back again having also been behind in the quarters and semis. 'I can't believe it. The word 'team' really describes who we are,' Wiegman said. 'I am so proud of them. It's incredible.' Heart trumps possession Mariona Caldentey nodded in after 25 minutes to put Spain on the way in normal time but an equally good header from Alessia Russo - previously short of goals - pulled England level on 57. Spain came close in extra-time at the end of the most watched women's Euro tournament ever, but England would not be denied. England brought back Jess Carter in central defence for Esme Morgan while Lauren James was fit to play after ankle trouble - but looked off the pace and was replaced by Kelly on 40 minutes. Wiegman had resisted the temptation to start Michelle Agyemang or Kelly despite their heroics in the comeback wins over Sweden and Italy in the previous two rounds. Spain made two changes from the extra-time victory over Germany, with Athenea replacing Clàudia Pina on the wing and defender Laia Aleixandri coming back from suspension for Maria Mendez. England had a couple of early chances while Mariona went close at the other end in an open first half in Basel. She did not have to wait too long though as her bullet header from Ona Batlle's cross after a neat move put Spain in front. Classy Spain had the better of the opening exchanges of the second half too, but then the Lionesses levelled out of nowhere. Kelly's cross was superbly headed home by Russo, who was given too much room by the Spanish defence. She nodded it back the way it came for her second goal of the tournament. The game stayed open and Kelly's shot was just pushed past the post. England teenager Agyemang - the young player of the tournament - was then introduced for Russo, with former world player of the year Alexia Putellas replaced by Pina for Spain. It was the third straight game for England to go at least 120 minutes and the second in a row for Spain. Salma Paralluelo went close for a dominant Spain in the extra period - but penalties were needed. England triumphed as their heart trumped Spain's possession-based approach. The Spanish had wanted to move on from 2023, where the aftermath of their World Cup final win was dominated by the kiss scandal involving then-Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales rather than their victory. 'I'm in shock. We've given it our all,' Bonmatí said. 'I must apologize for my mistake in the penalties and congratulate our opponents. We were superior in terms of play, but that's not everything, you have to score.'

Liverpool's Slot leaves Diaz out of friendly loss

PA Media/dpa London Liverpool head coach Arne Slot left Luis Diaz out of their 4-2 friendly defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong due to ongoing speculation about his future. Bayern Munich are understood to have reopened dialogue with the Premier League champions, having had an initial offer of ?67.5 million($79.2 million) dismissed last week. Liverpool have maintained they do not want to sell the forward - who has also attracted interest from Barcelona - and the Bundesliga champions' bid was way below their own valuation of ?100 million for an elite forward in the global market. Diaz turns 29 in January and has two years left on his current deal but has not yet had an offer of a new contract. 'In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that,' said Slot. 'He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. 'I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.' Asked whether Diaz wanted to leave, Slot added: 'That is not the person to ask, me.' Striker Darwin Nunez, whose own future appears to lie away from Anfield, and midfielder Wataru Endo missed the game with minor fitness issues. Club-record signing Florian Wirtz made his first start as a false nine, with latest signing Hugo Ekitike left out of the squad, having only arrived on Thursday. Slot played two different starting XIs in each half, with midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and left back Kostas Tsimikas both required to fill a centre back role after Joe Gomez returned home for treatment on an Achilles injury. 'We thought it was better to assess it back in England and for him to work on him to come back to the team, probably in more ideal circumstances for him,' added Slot, who denied Gomez's absence left him dangerously-short in the position after selling Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. 'I don't think we have a concern at centre back. I think Ryan (Gravenberch) showed today that he can play in that position. He did it last season as well. 'Although we all know we favour him as a number six, Wata (Endo) can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury, he has been good for us last season as well. 'We have enough options left but it's true that Jarell Quansah left and we haven't replaced him yet.'

Alex Albon was fifth quickest in the Williams ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell.
