Briton Lando Norris continued his resurgence by seizing pole position on Saturday for the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix.
The McLaren man had won the last two races to close the gap at the top of the standings to his team-mate Oscar Piastri. He has the chance to do it again on Sunday, with the Australian second on the grid.
It was a first McLaren pole at Spa since 2012.
'The car has been flying all weekend, Oscar has been doing a good job so we have been pushing each other which is good. It is a good but tough battle we are having at the moment,' Norris said.
Rain is forecast for the Ardennes Forest on Sunday at one of the drivers' favourite tracks on the calendar.
'I'd prefer it to stay dry to be honest - it would be nice to have a dry Sunday,' Norris added amid memories of many rainy days in Belgium.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third fastest and Dutchman Max Verstappen, who won the sprint race a few hours before qualifying, was fourth in the Red Bull. Alex Albon was fifth quickest in the Williams ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell.
Championship leader Piastri had been quickest in Friday practice and sprint qualifying but played second fiddle on Saturday.
'The second lap was coming together really well and I just made a little mistake in (turn) 14. It is fine margins out there,' Piastri said.
Briton Hamilton, who started 18th and finished 15th in the sprint race, was punished for exceeding track limits and had his final time chalked off.

Salah scores as Liverpool unleash $359 mn new signings vs Athletic

PA Media/dpa London Liverpool showcased £270 million ($359 million) worth of new signings in the 3-2 friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao but the goals still went to established Premier League winners Mohamed Salah - who also missed a late penalty - and Cody Gakpo. Florian Wirtz's first look at Anfield gave fans a glimpse of why the club made him their - and with add-ons potentially a British - record signing with some clever touches and interplay and almost the opening goal. Head coach Arne Slot believes the Germany international will replace the creativity they lost from the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. 'I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman. 'Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third and we have lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back.' 'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special - Flo has this quality in a totally different position. He brings that creativity.' Wirtz's fellow new signings also showed they were settling in well as Jeremie Frimpong linked up well with Salah, fellow full-back Milos Kerkez was solid and Hugo Ekitike showed flexibility across the forward line. Wirtz headed onto the crossbar before Ekitike crossed for Salah to fire home and Gakpo scored twice after the break after Oihan Sancet had levelled. Liverpool went into the double-header with just one recognized centre-back with Virgil van Dijk ill and Joe Gomez injured and looked vulnerable at set-pieces, with Maroan Sannadi heading an equalizer from a corner. 'The other games pre-season we have conceded a few too many chances but today we hardly conceded anything at all and that pleased me as well,' added Slot. 'So to concede two set-piece goals in the second game is not what you want, especially if you play Crystal Palace next week who are a team who are very strong on set-pieces. That's another thing to work on.' In both matches Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, was remembered with fans standing and clapping and singing the forward's song. When the clock showed 20, action on the pitch also halted as players and officials joined in the applause. Liverpool's second string won 4-1 earlier, after an erroneous fire alarm had evacuated the Main Stand before kick-off, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha continuing his impressive pre-season form with a goal after just 87 seconds. Ben Doak, three years his senior, also scored while there were goals for Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players whose futures appear to be away from Anfield. Nunez, who has been linked with Al Hilal for a while with AC Milan also opening talks over the Uruguay international, thumped the badge on his shirt in front of the Kop while Elliott was the last to leave the pitch having blown kisses to all four sides of the ground.

McLaren boss anticipates Norris and Piastri ‘swapping paint again'

PA Media/DPA London McLaren boss Zak Brown said he is 'fully anticipating' that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will collide again this season as the intra-team tension intensifies to be crowned champion of the world. Norris heads into Formula One's summer break just nine points behind Piastri in the standings following his third win from his last four appearances at Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. Piastri came close to taking Norris out on the penultimate lap as they duelled for the win. There was a similar narrow escape between the McLaren drivers at the Red Bull Ring in June, a fortnight after Norris ran into the back of Piastri in Canada. 'There is competitiveness brewing but we are not feeling any tension,' insisted Brown. 'As the championship builds, I am sure that tension will grow. We are fully anticipating them swapping paint again at some point but I am very confident it wouldn't be deliberate, which is when you get into problems and get bad blood. 'I don't think they will fall out because of the communication, trust and respect we all have and they have for each other. We are very fortunate to have the two personalities that we have and I am looking forward to them racing each other. They are free to race. And if something bubbles up we will deal with it. 'It is not the elephant in the room because we talk about it. We meet every Sunday morning, they know each other's strategy, and we are totally transparent. 'I have said to both of them individually: 'Has your team-mate done anything to p*** you off?' Never. And that's what they have both said. Fundamentally you've got two great, respectful guys and their relationship today is the best it has ever been.' Norris drove well at the Hungaroring but could count himself somewhat fortunate to win after he qualified behind Piastri and then dropped two places to fifth on the first lap. A one-stop strategy reversed his fortunes but Norris admitted afterwards that he is 'not making life easy for myself' and there have been doubts as to the 25-year-old's title credentials. Nico Rosberg, the 2016 world champion, said recently that 'the championship is going to be decided in Lando's head'. But Brown responded: 'Lando is in a great place. There was also a time Lando couldn't win from pole position, according to the world, and he has won four of his last five races from pole, so I think this kind of narrative around Lando is not accurate. 'He is open, he kind of wears his emotions on his sleeve, everyone is different, and Lando of a year ago could maybe be more critical on himself but he is in a great place, I've never seen him in a better place and he is doing an awesome job.'
