Music, acrobatics and local flavour at this year's LaSalle Strawberry Festival

Mark your calendars for the return of the LaSalle Strawberry Festival, set for Thursday, June 5 to Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the Vollmer Recreation Complex, 2121 Laurier Parkway. The four-day celebration promises a packed lineup of entertainment, carnival rides, a hometown parade, dazzling fireworks and plenty of local food—especially fresh strawberries.
Organizers are currently finalizing plans for the festival's 37th year, which has grown into LaSalle's signature summer event.
'The LaSalle Strawberry Festival is a celebration of our town's history and community spirit,' said Mayor Crystal Meloche. 'As our longest-running event, it reflects the heart of LaSalle—where families, friends and visitors come to celebrate summer. From exciting entertainment to tasty local strawberries, there's something for everyone.'
Local businesses, service clubs and community groups are invited to join the LaSalle Strawberry Festival Parade on Saturday, June 7. The 1.5-km route begins at the Turkey Creek Bridge on Front Road and ends at Sacred Heart Drive. Step-off is at 10 a.m. and parade participation is free. Applications are open until May 30 on the LaSalle Strawberry Festival website.
This year's entertainment lineup includes the Canadian performance group Throw 2 Catch, who will bring their high-energy 'Geek Quest' show to the festival grounds. This unique acrobatic performance combines circus-style feats, humour and heart as a quirky team of heroes takes the stage. Audiences can expect synchronized flips, daring stunts and gravity-defying throws in a show designed to entertain all ages.
Live music also takes centre stage with a trio of featured headliners. On Thursday evening, Amherstburg country artist Adam Butcher kicks off the music with a performance known for strong vocals and stage charisma. On Friday night, Windsor's Slim Pickerel Band takes the spotlight with their genre-blending style that mixes rock, folk, country, blues and Motown.
Saturday's featured act is veteran performer Jody Raffoul, a rock singer-songwriter from Leamington known for his soulful voice and working-class anthems. Raffoul has built a loyal following over three decades and has shared the stage with international acts including Bon Jovi, Joe Cocker and The Guess Who. His music blends classic rock and modern edge with a personal, story-driven touch.
Slim Pickerel's four-piece ensemble has deep Essex County roots and a sound shaped by the Great Lakes region. Their music ranges from heartfelt ballads to guitar-driven jams, telling stories grounded in everyday life. Known for high-energy live sets, the band brings a strong local presence to the weekend stage.
Adam Butcher is a rising name in country music, also rooted in Essex County. Known for his authentic style and crowd-pleasing performances, Butcher continues to gain attention as he explores new musical horizons.
Whether you come for the rides, the music or the food, the 2025 LaSalle Strawberry Festival has something for everyone. Visit the festival website closer to the event date for a full schedule of activities, concerts and family attractions.

Do West Fest takes over stretch of west end street in Toronto

A festival that bills itself as "Toronto's start to the summer" has taken over a stretch of a major west end street this weekend. Now in its 12th year, Do West Fest celebrates the rich culture of the city's Little Portugal neighbourhood. Sixteen blocks are closed to traffic across Dundas Street W. between Lansdowne Avenue and Shaw Street. The streets are now filled with food trucks and local vendors instead of cars. Organizers have set up three music stages — Lulaworld, Community and Transmit Presents — throughout the festival. "All of them bring a bit of a different flavor," Kristyn Gelfand, the event's lead producer told CBC Toronto on Friday. "Lulaworld has bands from as far away as Ecuador and Brazil. The Community Stage is programmed hyper-locally, so all the artists on that stage have a direct connection to this neighbourhood, whether they live or work or rehearse in this right here on Dundas," Gelfand said.. "And then [there's] the Transmit Stage, which brings in the best of Canadian indie rock from all across the country." The festival will wrap up at 6 pm. on Saturday, but road closures on Dundas Street W. will stay in effect until midnight.

Bask in the grotesque pixel-art beauty of Neverway

Neverway already looks, sounds and feels like it's going to be something special — in a grim, grotesque and hellishly depressed kind of way. (Side note: That could be a nice tagline, no? It's grim! It's grotesque! It's hellishly depressed! It's... Neverway! OK, I'll stop.) Neverway is a life-sim RPG starring Fiona, a young woman who quits her dead-end job to live on a remote island farm for a while, where she ends up becoming the immortal herald of a dead god. Fiona has to fight through nightmare realms and battle repulsive horrors, while also tending her land and maintaining relationships with townsfolk. She's able to meet and date more than 10 distinct characters, and forming friendship bonds unlocks combat abilities. The game features farming and fishing mechanics, and there's also a crafting system for secondary tools like the hookshot, which supplements Fiona's primary weapon, a sword. Neverway comes from Coldblood Inc., an independent Vancouver studio founded by Brazilian-Canadian developers Pedro Medeiros and Isadora Sophia. Medeiros is the pixel artist behind Towerfall and Celeste , two stunning indie games, and Sophia is an ex-senior software engineer at Microsoft and the creator of the open-source Murder Engine, which powers Neverway . The game also features music by Disasterpiece, the composer behind Fez and the top-tier horror film It Follows , with sound design by Martin Kvale of NokNok Audio. OuterSloth, the indie game fund established by Among Us creators InnerSloth , is providing financial backing for Neverway , and Coldblood Inc. is self-publishing it. Though Neverway was officially announced one month ago during the Triple-i Initiative showcase, it still made a splash as part of the Day of the Devs event tied to Summer Game Fest 2025 this week. Neverway is heading to PC at an undetermined future time, and it's available to wishlist on Steam now.
