Gold falls on profit-taking, hopes for Russia-Ukraine peace talks

Bullion is $14 shy of its $2,942.70 record high
Gold's upside remains capped says analyst
Fed's January meeting minutes due later
Feb 19 (Reuters) - Gold fell on Wednesday on profit-taking after prices hit record highs recently, with investors watching out for peace talks after U.S. President Donald Trump's administration agreed to hold more talks with Russia on ending the war in Ukraine.
Spot gold shed 0.2% to $2,928.52 an ounce, as of 0338 GMT, $14 shy of its all-time high of $2,942.70 hit last week.
U.S. gold futures dropped 0.1% to $2,945.90.
"Gold's upside remains capped as first round of talks between the U.S. and Russia over potential peace deal in Ukraine has ended with no clear path but if they come out with a solid plan, then definitely it could be negative for gold," said Ajay Kedia, director at Mumbai-based Kedia Commodities.
"There should be technical profit booking because war premium should be slightly eroding. The upside could be capped around $2,970 as resistance and $2,890 as support."
Trump's administration said on Tuesday it agreed to hold more talks with Russia on ending the war in Ukraine after the initial Russia-Ukraine peace talks finished without Kyiv or Europe at the table.
Bullion is viewed as a traditional hedge against rising inflation and geopolitical uncertainties.
"Trump's presidency is creating macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties that are likely to prompt investors to diversify into gold," analysts at ANZ said, adding that investment demand (in gold) would benefit from macroeconomic, geopolitical, trade and fiscal risks.
The bullion rose over 1% in the last session on concerns over economic growth, due to uncertainty surrounding Trump's tariff plans prompting safe-haven flows into bullion.
The market now awaits the Federal Reserve's January meeting minutes due later in the day for clues into the U.S. central bank's interest rate trajectory this year.
Spot silver dipped 0.9% to $32.57 an ounce. Platinum fell 1.3% to $974.32, and palladium was 1.3% lower at $974.56.

Extension plan at Ayrshire nursing home is approved

Proposals to increase the number of bedrooms within Dundonald House Nursing Home have been approved. Plans to improve the quality of the living environment at an Ayrshire nursing home have been given the green light. ‌ Ayrshire Live can reveal that proposals to increase the number of bedrooms within Dundonald House Nursing Home have been approved. ‌ An application was previously submitted to South Ayrshire Council, seeking permission for alterations and to build a single-storey extension at the home on Old Loans Road. ‌ It was hoped that as many as six new bedrooms could be built. The plans have now been approved under delegated powers. Agent in the proposals was Lochwinnoch-based James Harper Architect and the applicant is Anne Kerr, of Dundonald House Nursing Home Ltd. A supporting statement said: 'The proposal seeks to enhance the existing standard of care by introducing single-room accommodation, improving infection prevention, and embedding dementia-friendly principles within the design. 'Importantly, this development will not increase the registered capacity of the care home but will improve the quality of the living environment for residents.' ‌ The development comprises a single-storey extension with six en-suite bedrooms designed for 'single occupancy.' And interlinking doors between adjoining rooms will be incorporated to help provide flexibility to 'accommodate couples where appropriate.' And each room will eventually include a patio door for direct access to an external garden area and additional natural light within each bedroom. In addition to private accommodation, the extension will include a communal lounge/dining area with a servery, providing a 'homely, social environment' that 'encourages resident interaction, reduces isolation, and supports independent living.' In approving the plans, with conditions, council papers said: 'It is important to note that the alterations will not increase capacity of residents at the care home, however, provides up-to-date facilities to allow residents to remain at the care home. 'Due to the nature, scale and siting of the proposals, they are considered to have a neutral impact on the character and appearance of the adjacent conservation area and are not considered to compromise the integrity of the adjacent mature woodland."

Rupee rises with foreign banks keeping up dollar sales, confounding market

MUMBAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee inched higher on Thursday as persistent dollar selling by foreign banks over the last few days that supported the currency and puzzled traders. The rupee was at 86.9750 to the U.S. dollar at 11:05 a.m. IST, up from 87.0650 on Wednesday. Foreign banks were on the offer in dollar/rupee again, extending the pattern seen over the past two sessions, traders said. The persistence of these flows has confounded markets regarding their origin, with many doubting they were exporter-related. One banker noted that portfolio inflows into equities and debt have been tepid, suggesting flows from custodian clients were unlikely. While the market was expecting the rupee to be rangebound, dealers said position adjustments or one-off large trades were the more probable drivers. That the rupee "is managing to hold up despite Jackson Hole event and the U.S. tariff overhang is surely surprising to many," said a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank. U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Powell is set to speak on Friday at the Jackson Hole symposium where his remarks will be closely watched. His previous remarks at the meeting had previously shifted market expectations. Meanwhile, the August 27 deadline on which the additional 25% U.S. tariffs on Indian goods is implemented looms. If implemented, it would pose a fresh negative for the rupee. The currency last week had remained largely weak, making a low of 87.73. After giving good opportunity to exporters in the last week it is the turn of importers who are getting an opportunity to hedge their near-term payables, Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors, said.

Trump calls for Fed governor to resign over alleged mortgage fraud

"Cook must resign, now!!!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on the morning of Aug. 20, shortly after Bill Pulte, director of the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency, publicized a letter referring the Fed governor for criminal proseccution to the Justice Department. More: Trump tussles with Powell during Federal Reserve visit but backs off firing threat Pulte, in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, accused Cook of falsifying bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms. He said this included falsifying residence statuses in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Atlanta to potentially secure lower interest rates. Cook did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for comment on the allegations. Cook, a former economics and international relations professor at Michigan State University, is the first Black woman to ever sit on the Fed's board. Cook previously served as a senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisers in former President Barack Obama's White House. For months, Trump has railed against Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell over the Fed's unwillingness to lower interest rates as Trump has demanded, calling the chairman a "numbskull," "stupid person" and "too late." Powell has cited inflationary concerns from Trump's robust tariff regime in keeping interest rates steady. More: Trump considering lawsuit against Fed as he bashes Chair Jerome Powell Despite publicly weighing the idea of firing Powell, Trump has instead said he will wait to replace him when the chairman's term ends in 2026. Experts say the president can only remove a Fed chair for cause. Trump has also discussed possible criminal charges against Powell - and perhaps suing Powell - over the ballooning budget in a $2.5 billion renovation of the agency's Washington, DC headquarters. The Federal Open Market Committee, which sets interest rates, is a 12-member panel composed of the seven governors on the Fed board and five Reserve Bank presidents. Two Republican members of the FOMC Committee in July voted to lower interest rates, marking the first time since 1993 that two governors have dissented from a Fed decision. To fill an earlier vacancy on the Fed's board of governors, Trump on Aug. 7 nominated Stephen Miran, who chairs the White House's Council of Economic Advisers. If confirmed by the Sebate, Miran would replace Fed Governor Adriana Kugler, who resigned on Aug. 1 before her term was set to expire.
