Olympique Lyonnais Still Face Relegation down to Ligue 2 Threats

Rana Atef
Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais are still facing the threat of relegation down to Ligue 2, according to a financial report from L'Équipe.
The prestigious French outlet asserted that despite the club's winter transfer window, they still need to make savings to meet the DNCG's requirements and prevent relegation down to Ligue 2.
In November, Lyon were handed a provisional relegation to the second tier as well as a transfer ban and supervision of their wages after the clubs's debt reportedly rose from €458 million to €508 million.
So, they made an active winter transfer work where they sold some of their highest earners, as Saïd Benrahma, Anthony Lopes, and Maxence Caqueret.
L'Équipe added that the winter sales, as well as the departures of Orel Mangala and Dejan Lovren in the summer, have freed up an estimated €1.7 million from their wage bill.
The French outlet highlighted that Lyon still have work to do.

FRA issues temporary licensing conditions for medical insurance, healthcare programme firms

The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA), under the leadership of Mohamed Farid, has issued Decision No. 90 of 2025, introducing a temporary licensing framework for specialist medical insurance companies and healthcare programme management firms. This initiative is intended to facilitate continued operations by these entities while they align with the provisions of the Unified Insurance Law No. 155 of 2024. According to a statement by the FRA, the new measures aim to support existing service providers within a defined regulatory framework, ensuring continuity while mandating a structured path toward full compliance. Firms newly entering the market must apply directly for permanent licensing under the same law. Under the decision, companies must submit an application for temporary licensing, committing to a detailed plan for achieving full regulatory alignment. If firms fail to meet the requirements within the designated timeframe, their temporary status will be revoked. A grace period for compliance has been granted through FRA Decision No. 102 of 2025, extending the deadline to 11 July 2026. The licensing conditions were developed following multiple rounds of stakeholder consultation, with the FRA emphasizing the importance of practical implementation and alignment with market dynamics. To qualify for a temporary licence, companies must be established as joint-stock entities with fully paid-up capital and shareholder equity at least equal to the paid-in capital. Specialist medical insurance firms are required to have a minimum capital of EGP 10m at the time of application. Additionally, these firms must demonstrate a portfolio of long-term insurance contracts valued at no less than EGP 100m, with contracts in place dating back at least three years before the law's enactment. Applicants must also demonstrate adequate operational infrastructure and up-to-date IT systems appropriate for their business activities. A qualified administrative team is mandatory. For medical insurance firms, this includes a managing director, an underwriting officer, and a claims officer. Healthcare programme administrators must appoint a managing director, a claims officer, and a medical approvals officer. These individuals are subject to FRA-administered competency evaluations. Auditors must be selected from the FRA's approved registry—Section I for insurance companies, and either Section I or II(A) for healthcare administrators. In addition, companies are required to submit a comprehensive compliance plan detailing the timeline and strategy for capital increases in accordance with FRA Decision No. 196 of 2024. No profit distribution to shareholders is permitted until capital requirements are fulfilled, unless explicitly authorised by the FRA. The application process also requires a full set of supporting documents, including an updated company statute, a recent extract from the commercial registry, a valid tax identification number, and legal proof of no prior bankruptcy rulings. Firms must also disclose their shareholder structure and provide board member declarations confirming the absence of criminal or bankruptcy history. Audited financial statements—either annual or quarterly—must be included, and the FRA reserves the right to request additional documentation as needed. Through this decision, the FRA seeks to maintain market integrity while ensuring that firms transition smoothly into compliance with the new insurance framework.

The Safe Haven Turns into a Speculative Arena… Who Controls Gold?

Waleed Farouk Gold prices in local Egyptian markets rose by 5.7% during the trading week that ended on Saturday evening, while global prices rose by 3.6% during the week ending Friday, driven by escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. These developments have reignited gold's appeal as a safe-haven asset amid growing geopolitical risks and global economic uncertainty. Saeed Embabi, Executive Director of the online gold and jewelry trading platform iSagha, stated that local gold prices increased by EGP 240 per gram during the past week. The price of 21-karat gold opened the week at EGP 4,660 and closed at EGP 4,900, while the global ounce price rose by $120, from $3,310 to $3,430. He added that 24-karat gold reached EGP 5,600, 18-karat gold recorded EGP 4,200, and 14-karat stood at EGP 3,267. Meanwhile, the price of a gold pound reached EGP 39,200. Embabi emphasized that local markets experienced unjustified price surges over the weekend, even though international markets were closed. He noted that the last recorded global ounce price was $3,430, and with the official USD exchange rate at EGP 49.85, the fair value of 21-karat gold should have been around EGP 4,800 as of Saturday. However, raw gold traders pushed prices to EGP 4,900, and in some retail shops, it even reached EGP 5,000 per gram on Sunday, despite the weekend holiday. This discrepancy, according to Embabi, suggests that the local market is pricing the dollar at above EGP 51, raising questions about the pricing mechanism—especially in the absence of any logical justification or global developments that could explain such a spike. He accused some market participants of excessive hedging or even speculative greed, stressing that these behaviors may harm consumers, especially when there is no real demand to justify such surges and when 21-karat gold is being sold at EGP 5,000 per gram. 'Raising prices during market holidays without real cause shows that the local market is reacting to fear, not fundamentals,' Embabi said. He outlined two possible scenarios that could explain the gap between local and global gold prices: A sudden spike in local demand, which might have led some traders to raise prices selectively to ease supply pressures. However, Embabi dismissed this, saying: 'We haven't seen any exceptional buying activity or large-scale hoarding that would justify such a sudden rise.' Preemptive moves by major market players, possibly based on expectations of a rise in the parallel market exchange rate or in anticipation of unannounced economic decisions, prompting some to adjust prices defensively. Embabi ruled out geopolitical tensions—such as the Israel-Iran conflict—as the direct cause of the local price surge, noting that geopolitical impacts typically materialize during active global market trading sessions, not after they close, which was not the case here. He advised consumers to exercise caution and patience when making purchasing decisions: 'In this climate of uncertainty, it's better to remain calm and not rush into temporary and unjustified price waves. Waiting and buying at the right time is safer than following potentially unsustainable spikes.' Global Perspective: War Boosts Gold, Dollar Loses Shine On the global front, Embabi noted that Israel's recent military strikes contributed to stock market declines and oil price hikes, boosting gold's attractiveness as a safe haven. The yellow metal ended the week with a historic close at $3,440 per ounce, outperforming the U.S. dollar, which lost some of its luster as a safe-haven asset. He added that the noticeable shift in investor behavior confirms gold's rising status as an economic sanctuary, reflecting declining trust in traditional investment tools—particularly the U.S. dollar and Treasury bonds. U.S. economic data further reinforced this trend: CPI and PPI figures for May showed continued slowing inflation, fueling expectations that the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates in upcoming meetings. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment improved modestly, according to data from the University of Michigan. Markets are now awaiting the outcomes of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on June 17–18, alongside key releases such as retail sales, industrial output, labor market data, and housing indicators—all of which could shape gold's trajectory in the near term. Despite easing inflation, a 6% jump in oil prices—driven by escalating Middle East tensions—has sparked concerns about a new inflationary wave, particularly in fuel prices, which could renew pressure on central banks' monetary policy stances. Bullish Forecasts Ahead Goldman Sachs reiterated its forecast that gold could reach $3,700 by the end of 2025 and $4,000 by mid-2026—a view echoed by Bank of America, which expects the same level within the next 12 months. The European Central Bank's annual report revealed that central banks' gold reserves have reached 36,000 tonnes, approaching post-Bretton Woods era highs. This suggests that institutional demand remains robust and is likely to support prices in the near term. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

GPC announces new oil discovery in Egypt's Western Desert - Society

The General Petroleum Company (GPC) has announced a new oil discovery—GPR-1X—in the Abu Sennan fields of Egypt's Western Desert, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said Sunday. Initial tests show the well produces up to 1,400 barrels of crude oil and around 1 million cubic feet of gas per day from the Behaira layer. The discovery adds an estimated two million barrels of recoverable reserves. GPC Chairman Mohamed Abdel Meguid said the well is undergoing production testing and has shown promising hydrocarbon indicators. The discovery is the second in Abu Sennan in three months and aligns with the ministry's push to raise domestic output and boost production from mature fields. GPC credited artificial intelligence tools for aiding the find, highlighting the remaining potential in the Western Desert. Energy strain prompts urgent measures The announcement comes amid growing pressure on Egypt's energy sector, as regional tensions and falling gas supplies strain electricity production. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Saturday that recent Israeli strikes on Iran have disrupted natural gas flows. This has prompted Egypt to fast-track the deployment of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification vessels by early July. Together with an existing unit, they will provide 2.25 billion cubic feet of gas daily. Madbouly said the government is working to prevent summer power cuts, doubling fuel oil reserves to secure generation capacity. Egypt's domestic gas production has dropped to 4.1 billion cubic feet per day, while demand now exceeds 6 billion. The electricity sector alone consumes nearly 60 percent of that supply. At the same time, Israeli gas exports to Egypt have fallen by one billion cubic feet per day, leaving just 800 million cubic feet flowing during the summer. According to Reuters, Egypt may need to spend up to $3 billion on LNG shipments to maintain current power generation levels. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
