Albertsons beefs up its private label offerings

Miami Herald15-05-2025
Dive Brief:
Albertsons on Wednesday debuted a private label line of ready-to-cook marinated meats featuring "adventurous flavors and globally inspired ingredients" that take about 20 minutes to prepare. The chain is bringing items sporting the new house brand, Chef's Counter, to the self-service meat department before expanding the line to the deli, frozen and center store sections next year.Albertsons is positioning the new brand to attract shoppers interested in preparing restaurant-style meals on a budget.
Dive Insight:
Albertsons is bolstering its own brands portfolio with a new assortment of unique foods as the grocer looks to set itself apart from competitors and connect with price-conscious consumers who want to cook at home.
The grocer, which inaugurated Susan Morris as CEO at the beginning of the month, said in a press release about its newest house brand that it wanted to offer "distinctly memorable and sensorily evocative experiences and trend-forward flavors that are often challenging to replicate."
Chef's Counter selections range in price from $4.99 to $12.69. Options include lemon peppercorn chicken, boneless pork loin chops featuring mesquite or garlic herb flavors, and chimichurri beef sirloin steaks. Shoppers can also opt for carne asada beef flap steak that Albertsons said was designed to "evoke a distinct restaurant experience."
Albertsons has also added a collection of shoppable recipes featuring Chef's Counter-branded items to its online platforms. In addition, the grocer has enlisted celebrity chef Antonia Lofaso to help promote the brand through content on social media.
Albertsons' addition of Chef's Counter follows the company's introduction in September of Overjoyed, which spans multiple grocery categories including snack mixes, candy, cookies and dessert supplies. The grocer also brought out Bee Lightly, a line of wines that come in flat bottles made from 100% recycled plastic, last fall.
Retailers have been expanding their selections of house brands as they angle to build ties with shoppers while holding down costs. Private label grocery sales rose by almost 4% last year, to a record $271 billion, according to Circana data cited by the Private Label Manufacturers Association.

Kroger settles with C&S Wholesale after failed $25 billion Albertsons merger

Kroger announced Aug. 11 that it has settled litigation with C&S Wholesale Grocers, which sued the Cincinnati-based supermarket giant in the wake of a failed $25 billion merger with Albertsons. The Keene, New Hampshire-based supplier and retailer was set to acquire nearly 600 divested stores from Kroger and Albertsons upon completion of the deal. C&S Wholesale claimed Kroger owed it a $125 million termination fee in the event the merger was called off. Kroger said all claims were resolved. Terms of the settlement were confidential. 'We are pleased to resolve the claims from C&S, and we look forward to a friendly relationship with them going forward,' said Interim CEO Ron Sargent, in a statement. Would-be acquirer of stores was part of merger's failure C&S Wholesale was seen as part of the reason for the merger's failure. While the company supplies thousands of grocery stores nationwide, its retail operations were modest: a couple dozen stores. In the successful antitrust cases against the merger, regulators argued C&S Wholesale would not be a strong enough competitor to a super-sized Kroger. C&S Wholesale executives also faced several awkward questions during antitrust hearings when it was revealed they had mocked their own company's retail investments. Litigation against Kroger in the aftermath of the abandoned merger is not over: The Boise, Idaho-based retailer announced it was also suing Kroger the same day it pulled out of the deal for allegedly botching regulatory approval. Albertsons' lawsuit is also seeking to collect a breakup fee worth $600 million. Details of Kroger CEO's abrupt exit sought in two lawsuits In that case, Albertsons is seeking the reason that Kroger's long-serving CEO Rodney McMullen resigned in March following an ethics investigation. Kroger has offered few details of McMullen's exit, saying only that "certain personal conduct" by McMullen was 'inconsistent' with its ethics policy. Albertsons argues that Kroger's ethical conduct, while McMullen was at the helm, is relevant to how it pursued its efforts to win merger approval. McMullen's departure has also come up in another lawsuit against Kroger. Grammy-nominated singer Jewel has sued the grocer for allegedly cutting her out of the Kroger Wellness Festival, which she helped organize in its early years. In that case, a judge has ordered McMullen to explain the details of his resignation, which may later be revealed in court records.

Amazon adds perishable food to same-day delivery

Amazon is expanding its same-day grocery delivery service with the addition of perishable food items in over 1,000 US cities. Shoppers can now add fresh grocery items like produce, dairy, meat, seafood and frozen foods to their orders. Grocery and non-grocery items can be combined into one order, checked out from one cart and received together on the same day. The company had trialed this service in the Phoenix area last year. Prime members continue to get free same-day delivery where available on orders over $25, and non-Prime members can still pay an additional $12.99 shipping fee to receive a same-day delivery. Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market in 2017 and has been making strategic moves to capture grocery market share in the years since. The tech giant has experimented with self-checkout technology , and even opened its own Amazon-branded brick-and-mortar grocery stores . Amazon CEO Andy Jassey is determined to grow the grocery side of the business to compete with the likes of Walmart and Instacart . Amazon says it plans to "expand to over 2,300 cities" by the end of 2025, with plans to continue adding more locations next year.
