Quebec police report 38 deaths on the roads during the construction holiday weekend

No fewer than 38 deaths occurred on Quebec's roads and trails during the construction holiday, the worst toll in the last 10 years. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) counted 25 collisions on the road network it serves, resulting in 31 deaths. During the same period last year, there were 13 deaths on the roads. READ MORE: One dead and several seriously injured in major collision in the Eastern Townships In addition to this toll, there were five collisions on the recreational and tourist network, resulting in seven deaths. A year ago, there were four deaths on the recreational and tourist network during the construction holiday. The provincial police force says bluntly that this is the 'worst toll in the last 10 years' on the roads it monitors. The SQ identifies distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving due to drugs, alcohol or a combination of both, and failure to wear safety equipment as the main causes of serious road accidents. The police force says it will continue its awareness and enforcement efforts in the coming days, as the holiday season continues for many Quebecers. This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on Aug. 4, 2025.

Owner charged for leaving pets inside vehicle in Oshawa, leading to death of 1 dog

A dog looks out the window of a car in motion. (AP Photo/Juan Karita) A dog owner was arrested after leaving their pets inside a vehicle for an extended period in Oshawa, which police said resulted in one of the dogs being euthanized due to a heat stroke. On Sunday, Durham police said they responded to an animal abuse call in the area of Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road West for reports of two dogs in a vehicle who appeared to be in distress. Shortly after, officers said they located the vehicle at a veterinary clinic where one of the dogs had to be euthanized. Police said they charged the owner, but did not provide further details about the incident. 'This serves as a reminder of the serious dangers posed to animals left in vehicles during hot weather,' police say in the post. Police are asking people to not leave animals alone in vehicles during the rising temperatures, as even a few minutes can prove to be dangerous.
